Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 5, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Disney and Comcast have signed a ten-year, comprehensive carriage deal that will see Disney’s channels and services to Comcast’s Xfinity TV customers across multiple platforms, including TV, online, tablets, and handheld devices. Heralded as a landmark deal, the agreement marks the first time that Comcast’s Xfinity TV customers will be able to watch ESPN, ABC of Disney shows live or on demand across multiple screens. The deal will also see Disney and Comcast collaborating on the creation of new viewing experiences. There are some 70 Disney networks and services featured under the deal, many specifically targeted to kids and families, including: ABC Family, Disney Channel, Disney XD, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Deportes, ESPNEWS, ESPN Classic, ESPN Goal Line, ESPN Buzzer Beater, ESPN 3D, ESPN GamePlan, ESPN FullCourt and ESPN3; retransmission consent for seven ABC O&O broadcast TV stations (WABC-TV New York, WLS-TV Chicago, WPVI-TV Philadelphia, KGO-TV San Francisco, KTRK-TV Houston, KTVD-TV Raleigh-Durham, and KFSN-TV Fresno), as well as 10+ HD networks. Additionally, Comcast will launch Disney Junior, the new 24-hr basic channel for preschoolers/parents and caregivers. Comcast will also provide its Xfinity TV customers with access to a suite of live Disney networks on an authenticated basis and expanded Xfinity On Demand content through Disney’s comprehensive TV+ initiative. In total, 70 services are covered by the broad scope of this new agreement. License fee schedules for different services under the deal will be phased in over time. Some particulars as they pertain to kid and family networks and services per the new agreement:
Comcast’s Xfinity TV customers will receive more ABC, ABC Family, Disney and ESPN content through their set-top-box and, at this time, Disney and ESPN content online, including:
- Disney-branded On Demand offerings, including Disney Channel On Demand, Disney Junior On Demand, and Disney XD On Demand. Refreshed each month, the Disney Channel On Demand offering will include a range of its series for both preschoolers and older kids. Select episodes featured on Disney Channel On Demand will be available in new offerings, such as playlists and monthly programming blocks, in addition to episodes available in multiple languages. Disney Channel Original Movies will also be available. Disney XD On Demand features a variety of episodes from series including Phineas and Ferb.
- Disney Channel’s subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) service, which offers on demand access to select episodes before they air, will now be available to Xfinity TV customers who receive Disney Channel, a service that Comcast will offer to these customers for no additional fee.
- The subscription On Demand service Disney Family Movies, which features a selection of classic and contemporary feature films and animated shorts from The Walt Disney Studios.
Xfinity TV customers will receive broad access to existing authenticated products like WatchESPN, as well as upcoming authenticated products, including WatchDisneyChannel, WatchDisneyXD and WatchDisneyJunior. These services will give Comcast’s Xfinity TV customers the opportunity to access live and video on demand content, both in-home and out-of-home, on their computers, smartphones, tablets and gaming consoles.
Xfinity TV customers will also receive the new Disney Junior 24-hour basic channel, which is set to debut in 2012.
Vancouver-based animation studio Slap Happy Cartoons (www.slaphappycartoons.com) enters into a development deal with Corus Entertainment’s YTV (Canada) for the animated series Nerds and Monsters (52×11). Created by Slap Happy Cartoons, Nerds and Monsters is targeted to kids/tweens 8-12, and follows the adventures of a group of nerdy high school kids on an uncharted island where they can use nothing but their own smarts to survive the unending attacks by a tribe of dim-witted monsters.
LICENSING
Turner CN Enterprises (TCNE), a licensor, broadcaster and third party representative, is set to attend the Nuremburg Toy Fair (February 1-6, 2012) with its advertising and media consulting division Turner Media Innovations (TMI) to offer EMEA toy partners customizable opportunities for various Turner brands. TCNE’s Master Toy partners will also be in attendance and will showcase TCNE’s portfolio of brands to future licensees and retail partners. Additionally, the Nuremburg market will host the official EMEA launch of the newest Ben 10 franchise, Omniverse, the new series that debuts globally Q4 2012.
Discovery Familia is set to premiere the new animated eco-friendly series Peztronauta on January 16, at 6:30p. The series, which will air daily, follows the adventures of Peztronauta, a space-suit wearing fish, and his pals Marina and Zeek as they travel from their home at the Eco Zoo Park to solve mysteries and protect the environment and their friends. Targeted to K4-7, the series also encourages viewers to interact with the characters by tapping and clapping along with Peztronauta. A co-production of Discovery Kids/ Discovery Familia and Brazil’s TV PinGuim, Peztronauta is already popular in Latin America. Part of Discovery Communications, Discovery Familia is a Spanish language network aimed at Hispanic moms and their kids.
CBeebies for the US Hispanic market will debut the mixed live-action/CG animated preschool series Baby Jake on January 9, at 8a, as part of its Tiempo de Despertar (Wake Up) block. Baby Jake will air on CBeebies Monday-Friday at 8a, with encores daily at 3p. Baby Jake is a Darrall Macqueen Production for CBeebies. The series is produced by Fiona Robinson and written by Dave Ingham. Maddy Darrall is producer and Billy Macqueen executive producer.
Meredith Corporation inks a deal with Disney Publishing Worldwide, under which it acquires Disney’s FamilyFun magazine and its ToyHopper and digital magazine apps. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close within 30 days. Targeted to moms with kids 3-12, FamilyFun launched in 1991, and has a median age of 35, and 60% of its readers are college-educated. FamilyFun will report to Carey Witmer, President/Meredith Parents Network. The first issue of FamilyFun published by Meredith is expected to be March 2012. FamilyFun currently has an audience of 6 million and rate base of 2.1 million. Meredith is already a presence in the parenthood space with brands such as Parents and American Baby. Disney Interactive’s Moms and Family online portfolio will retain all existing FamilyFun content for digital use.
Sesame Workshop releases two new interactive, educational Sesame Street book apps, 100th Day of School (free) and Big Block Party ($1.99), designed to support the development of early literacy skills and are available for Nokia’s new Symbian smartphones. Both book apps feature Elmo speaking directly to readers when they touch the screen and asks story related questions. Both book apps feature a range of Sesame Street characters and are available for download in the Nokia Store. Both apps also features read-aloud adult narration as well as text highlighting to help beginning readers. The development of these apps began as a research project between Sesame Workshop and Nokia Research Center, which aimed to explore how mobile technologies can be used to help kids develop literacy skills.
