Yahoo!‘s search for a Chief Executive Officer is finally over with the appointment of Scott Thompson, who up until now has been serving as the president of the PayPal division of eBay, to the executive position and the company’s Board of Directors, effective January 9, 2012. “Scott’s primary focus will be on the core business, and as CEO and director, he will work closely with the board as we continue the strategic review process to identify the best approaches for the company and its shareholders,” said Roy Boystock, Chairman of the Board at Yahoo! During Thompson’s time as president at PayPal, he helped expand the company’s user base from 50 million to 104 million active users in 190 countries; increase PayPal’s number of merchant partners to more than 8 million worldwide; and increase revenues from $1.8 billion to $4+ billion in 2011. Tim Morse, who was leading Yahoo! in the interim, will resume his role as Chief Financial Officer.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Set-top box maker Roku is planning to launch the Roku Streaming Stick sometime in the second half of 2012. A flash-drive-like gadget that can be plugged into the back of television sets, the Streaming Stick is a cordless, remote-less alternative to set-top boxes and connected TVs; it will deliver HD streaming video straight to the TV. The Streaming Stick will also feature Wi-Fi capabilities, a processor and software that will be capable of upgrades. However, it is only compatible with TV sets that have HDMI ports that are capable of Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL). The new device, which will cost somewhere between $50 to $100, is meant to be an interim solution for TV manufacturers as the industry shifts toward connected TVs.

As part of the new 10-year distribution deal between Comcast and Disney, Comcast Xfinity TV subscribers will get free access to the WatchESPN app, which will allow them to stream live sports broadcasts. Subscribers of the Xfinity TV service will also be able to live stream some Disney-branded programming (but not ABC programming) via upcoming WatchDisneyChannel, WatchDisneyXD and WatchDisneyJunior offerings.

In conjunction with the second season premiere of Portlandia, IFC is launching a live, dual-screen experience entitled IFC Sync. Available on IFC.com, the web application provides a way for the network to engage with viewers in real-time. Users will get the opportunity to chat with show personalities, view video clips, answer trivia questions and earn points to win real and virtual prizes. Portlandia co-creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein will lead-off the dual-screen initiative with a live chat during the premiere on Jan. 6, at 10 pm ET. Users can also access the app via Facebook login; the integration with the social network also includes a Facebook Leaderboard that will keep track of users’ point totals.

The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) has announced that fans will get the opportunity to watch select PBR Built Ford Tough Series events live on YouTube via the Professional Bull Riders Channel. The first event to be live streamed on YouTube will be opening night of the upcoming season, which takes place on January 6, at Madison Square Garden. The stream will feature HD-quality video and will complement the television broadcasts of the event on CBS Sports Network and NBC Sports Network.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Unruly Media, the global social video technology platform provider behind several online viral video campaigns such as Old Spice’s “Man Your Man Could Smell Like,” has secured $25 million Series A round of funding from Amadeus Capital Partners, Van den Ende & Deitmers and Business Growth Fund. The investment is the largest ever for a private company in the social video space and will be directed towards accelerating Unruly’s international growth. Unruly’s global media and technology platform currently reaches 725 million people across 74 countries. Since the company was founded in 2006, Unruly has delivered, tracked and audited 1.34 billion user-intended video views and executed over 1,400 social video campaigns for big global brands, including Coca-Cola, Electronic Arts, Unilever and T-Mobile.

Spool has raised $1 million in seed funding from SV Angel, Steve Chen (the founder of YouTube) Felicis Ventures, Vivi Nevo and others. The San Francisco-based start-up allows users to bookmark text, image and video content to mobile devices for later viewing, regardless of whether it is online or offline. The service also allows users to push the content to friends’ mobile devices without worrying about Flash or the type of devices their friends own. The start-up will use the funding to drive product development and hire additional engineers. The service is currently available for iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, any HTML5 browser and has add-ons for Chrome and Firefox.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

YouTube is the top-rated brand on Facebook according to Fathom Analytics’ new Relationship Quality Index, reports Ad Age Digital. The Index bases its rankings on four, equally weighted factors: the brand pages’ number of fans; the rate at which the brand is acquiring (or losing) fans; fan engagement (how often brands interact with fans); and emotional quality (strength of the emotional response in a fan’s comments). MTV ranks right behind YouTube at number two in the Index. It is followed by Coca-Cola at number three, with Starbucks and Disney rounding out the top five.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

AT&T has settled a patent lawsuit with TiVo by signing a patent licensing deal with the DVR provider, which will pay TiVo $215 million through June 2018. In fact, AT&T could pay up to $300 million if subscriptions of its U-Verse television package rise according to its own projections, said TiVo spokesman Steve Wymer in a statement to the Associated Press. This settlement follows a similar one Dish Network and EchoStar agreed to with TiVo last May for $500 million.

TransGaming, a distributor of games for set-top boxes and computers, has purchased the Interactive TV & Connected TV division of Oberon Media for about $7 million. The aggregated purchase price consists of $3 million in cash on closing, $2 million in earn outs and 4 million in TransGaming shares. Oberon’s distribution network includes agreements with numerous connected TV manufacturers, as well as cable, satellite and interactive TV service providers such as Dish Network and DirecTV. The acquisition will help TransGaming build its distribution reach on connected TVs to over 50 million households. The deal is expected to close tomorrow, January 6, 2012.

Game development studio Arkadium has inked a multi-year deal to develop casual and social games for multiple platforms that would be launched by Microsoft Studios. This agreement expands upon an existing two-year partnership between the companies, through which Arkadium has become the largest provider of games for Bing, MSN Messenger and Zone.com, a popular gaming website owned by Microsoft.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Netflix has announced that its subscribers streamed more than 2 billion hours of TV shows and movies across 45 countries in the fourth quarter of 2011. Netflix currently boasts more than 20 million streaming subscribers across the globe. In 2011, the company signed multi-year content deals with CBS, Twentieth Century Fox, Lionsgate, Miramax, Open Road Films, NBCUniversal, DreamWorks Animation, MGM, Disney-ABC Television Group and more.

Mobile browsing reached an all-time high this past December on Net Applications’ network of over 40,000 websites, reports CNET. In December 2011, mobile devices were responsible for 7.7% of browser usage on the network. Apple’s Safari maintained its position as the number one mobile web browser as it accounted for 53.3% of usage, which was a slight drop from 55% in November. The Opera Mini app was the second most popular browser on Net Applications’ network with 21.7% of usage; Google’s Android slotted in at third with 15.9% of usage.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

In a statement, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the company will officially launch the iPhone 4S in China on January 13. “With the launch in China next week, iPhone 4S will be available in over 90 countries, making this our fastest iPhone rollout ever,” Cook said. While China is the most prominent new market for its latest smartphone, Apple will also be rolling out the 4S to 21 other countries, including Anguilla and Uganda.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Paul Palmieri, the president and CEO of Millennial Media, has been named to the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s Board of Directors. He becomes the first mobile advertising exec to join IAB’s Board. As a member of the board, Palmieri will provide insight on the upcoming challenges and opportunities in the mobile app market. The IAB Board currently consists of approximately 40 executives from several large media companies including Amazon, CBS Interactive, Disney Interactive, Electronic Arts, Facebook, Hearst, Meredith, MTV and Univision.
