Cynopsis: Kids!
01.03.13

Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 3, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Good morning and happy 2013. The turning of the calendar always foretells change, and this year we’re wasting no time at Cynopsis: Kids. For starters, there’s me — your new editor. I’m absolutely thrilled to be stepping into this role. I’ve been around kids entertainment for decades, both as an editor at sister pub CableFAX and a contributor to Billboard, and as the mom of two pop culture-obsessed daughters (12 and 15). I look forward to continuing collaboration with my longtime industry colleagues and getting to know those of you I haven’t yet met.

We’re also moving from a daily to a weekly format. This means you can expect a more robust issue, chock full of industry news plus more analysis. I’ll augment the weekly edition with a monthly Q&A with an industry thought leader, meatier Web site content and breaking news alerts via Twitter. Please follow @CathyOlson67 and @CynopsisMedia to make sure you’re in on up-to-the-minute news.

Of course, we’re all in this together. So hit me up with any and all feedback at [email protected] or 703 864 5577. Here we go!

CARRIAGE

What fiscal cliff? We in kids media had other negotiations top of mind in the 11th hours of 2012. A brief look at the done deals: Charter and the Walt Disney Co.’s new multiyear, extended distribution deal means ABC Family, Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD are available to a broader swath of Charter customers, who also get access to authenticated services including WATCH Disney Channel, WATCH Disney XD, WATCH Disney Junior and coming-soon WATCH ABC Family. ABC Family On Demand, Disney Channel On Demand, Disney Junior On Demand, Disney XD On Demand and select Disney Channel Original Movies will be part of the agreement, which kick in mid-quarter… Cablevision and Viacom also rang in the new year in unison and avoided a blackout of nets including Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central on the predominant New York MSO and Cablevision’s western systems… Media General and Time Warner Cable got their retrans agreement in under the wire just before midnight Jan. 1, covering a dozen stations in markets including Tampa and Columbus, Ohio.

And the hangers-on: At press time, News Corp.’s Fox Television extended its deadline with Suddenlink Communications from the original 5 p.m. Wednesday buzzer time until 11:59 p.m. (CT) Thursday. On the line is the possible blackout of Fox cable nets including National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo Wild from Suddenlink systems in the six disputed regions.

LICENSING

Just in time for the debut of the new Wiggles lineup and upcoming tour, toy manufacturer Wicked Cool scored licensing rights to manufacture, market and distribute toys based on the Down Under dudes in North America and Australia. First batch of product, including plush musical instruments, will hit retail in the fall.

Global toy manufacturer Sun-Mate Corporation, the appointed master global toy partner for the new 3D, CGI international animated TV series The Jungle Book is expanding its roster of worldwide partners.  Sun-Mate Corporation revealed five new toy distributor agreements for the Jungle Book brand including those with Hunter Leisure in Australia; Flash Toys in Latin America; Haka, New Zealand; Prima Toys in South Africa; and MC Entertainment for Benelux.  Sun-Mate will offer marketing support to each company through TV advertising and promotional spots produced by Sun-Mate.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The nonprofit Entertainment Industries Council (www.eiconline.org) is relaunching its initiative to address gun violence in TV and film. The organization is eyeing kids content in conversations with producers, writers and distributors. “Media is a staple in our culture and one of the main drivers of attitude and behavior,” EIC president Brian Dyak tells CK. “We have the opportunity to provide writers the resources to reframe the conversation about firearms and safety.”

Nostalgia was big on the holiday menu this year. ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas movie extravaganza, in its 15th year, hit record levels in Total Viewers (2.8 million) and reached 100 million unique Total Viewers, according to the network, which says its Dec. 2 airing of “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” became the No. 1 cable movie of 2012 in Viewers 12-34 and Females 12-34.

Universal’s “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” was the top-selling DVD at Amazon.com during the holidays, according to the online retailer. “The Dark Knight Rises” Blu-ray/DVD combo and “The Dark Knight Trilogy” of all three Christopher Nolan films rounded out the top three.

More than three-quarters of U.S. households now own at least one HDTV set, up 14% from last year, according to Nielsen Insights.
