Good Morning.  It’s Thursday, January 31, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you all this week from the 2008 NATPE Convention in Las Vegas.

News from NATPE:

  • NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution renewed The Steve Wilkos Show in more than 85% of the U.S. for a second season in national syndication. Stations groups that have renewed the daytime talker include Tribune, Sinclair, Fox, LIN and Sunbeam among others.
  • Program Partners and 44 Blue Productions cleared the new daytime syndicated court show, Family Court with Judge Penny in more than 70% of the U.S. for a fall 2008 start. The 30m, first-run series stars Judge Penny Brown Reynolds and has been picked by these station groups: Fox Television Stations, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Barrington Broadcasting, Capital Broadcasting, CBS Television Stations, Entravision Communications, Freedom Broadcasting, Gray Television, Granite Broadcasting, Hearst-Argyle Television, JW Broadcasting, New Vision Television, Roberts Broadcasting, Tribune Broadcasting, Weigel Broadcasting and The CW Plus.
  • Production on the daytime syndicated talk show series Montel Williams will end at the conclusion of this season.  Distributor CBS TV Distribution will continue to syndicate the series in the fall, providing stations with Best of Montel packages, sold on a cash only basis.

National networks, Univision and Telemundo, are not the only Hispanic-targeted networks which will increase their coverage of the presidential campaign, according to Multichannel News. Many smaller networks will follow suit in an effort to mobilize the Latino vote. Public channel V-me TV will launch a comprehensive umbrella campaign called Participa 2008 which kicks off with a three-hour Super Tuesday special hosted by journalist Jorge Gestoso.

ReelzChannel offers a series of seven specials next month leading up the 80th Annual Academy Awards. The month-long campaign starts with ReelzChannel Special Feature: Best Supporting Actor and Actress this Friday at 830p and is topped off by a 30m Dailies show, And the Winners Were … airing live following the awards presentation on February 24. Specials in-between will focus on Sundance Film Festival, Best Actor and Actress, Producers Guild of America Awards, Best Director and Best Picture.

MTV’s Making the Band 4, Season 2 premiere on Monday (10p) delivered a 2.2 rating among P12-34 and averaged 2.2 million total viewers.

SCI FI Channel opens a block of investigative reality programming on March 5 as season four of Ghost Hunters returns at 9p and the second season launch of Destination Truth! begins at 10p.

BBC America also returns two of its dramas this spring as Hotel Babylon begins a third season with eight one-hour episodes on March 12 at 9p, produced by Carnival Films and distributed by BBC Worldwide. Robin Hood starts its second season April 26 at 9p with thirteen 65m episodes, a co-production with Tiger Aspect Productions and BBC America and distributed by BBC Worldwide.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Sci Fi Channel gave the official go ahead to a drama series called Sanctuary, ordering 13 episodes, reports THR.  The series originally debuted online as a hi-def web series, before going to cable.  The story follows a doctor and her protege, working to provide sanctuary to the elusive and strange creatures on earth.  The television series will use the full webisode cast, and the series is scheduled to begin production in March with a two hour pilot episode.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Better late than never. MySpace finally followed suit with Facebook in opening up its platform to third party applications. The MySpace developers platform, which goes live on Feb. 5, will enjoy some later adopter advantages. For one it will support Google‘s OpenSocial initiative from day one, enabling interoperability between other social networks including imeem, LinkedIn, Ning and orkut. Additionally MySpace says it will focus on monetizing third party content by allowing developers to share in ad revenue sold by its national sales team. Facebook, which opened up its API last month to allow apps to be added to outside sites, has seen its traffic virtually double to 23 million unique users since launching its developer platform last May.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYNational Geographic Channel Asia launches Nat Geo Junior, a new 1-hour weekday programming block that will air twice a day, beginning Monday, February 4 (10a and 5p), on National Geographic Channel.  Targeted to K7-16, the block aims to encourage kids to explore the world outside of school through a programming line-up features shows such as, I Don’t Know That (30×30), Mad Labs (20×30), and the new program Wild Detectives (10×30).  Wild Detectives joins the line-up on March 3.  Nat Geo Junior will be available in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and other ASEAN countries, where it is expected to reach 6+ million households.  The block is already available in India, Turkey and the Netherlands.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: CBS Paramount International Television concluded a deal for The Doctors in Canada with Global Television.  The network will be the exclusive Canadian broadcaster for the new daytime series, due to air this fall.  Featuring five practicing medical professionals, the show investigates and discusses hot-button medical topics.  The Doctors (WT) will be produced by Stage 29 Productions, in association with CBS Television Distribution. Tuesday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX tallied a higher rating this Tuesday night than the previous week at 9.8/24 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX had a tight grip at 8p as American Idol posted an 11.0/27 then maintained a winning streak through 9p with House at 8.6/20. NBC continued its 10p time period win with a Law & Order: SVU repeat at 2.9/8.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Starting Monday, Neal Shapiro takes over the position of CEO at the Educational Broadcasting Corporation, the licensee of Thirteen/WNET and WLIW/New York. Neal joined Thirteen/WNET and WLIW in February 2007 as President. Previous CEO/President, Dr. William F. Baker, will now become President Emeritus.

Katz Radio Group’s Eastman Radio upgraded Brian Surowitz to VP/Sales. Brian has been with Katz Radio for 10 years.

Julie Cleland advanced to Group Sales Manager for Eagle Television Sales, a division of Katz Television Group, in its Los Angeles office.

Rainbow Advertising Sales Corporation (RASCO), the advertising unit of Rainbow Media Holdings LLC, named Scott Collins to SVP/National Advertising Sales for WE tv. Scott will be responsible for increasing the number of advertisers on the network and will report to Arlene Manos, President, Rainbow National Network Advertising Sales. Previously, Scott was VP/Advertising Sales for NBC Universal Cable Entertainment, USA Network and the SCI FI Channel.

Erika Lewis moved to G4 as VP/Production where she will supervise the daily production of all original programming. Erika will also manage live event coverage such as news specials and reports from conferences and game shows. 

Eric Coleman joins Walt Disney Television Animation starting Monday as SVP/Development coming from Nickelodeon where he most recently was VP/Executive Producer, Animation Development and Production and the Executive in Charge/Production for the SpongeBob SquarePants series. At his new post, Eric will report to Gary Marsh, President/Entertainment, Disney Channels Worldwide. In addition, Meredith Roberts was named SVP/GM for DisneyToon Studios.

CBS West Coast On-Air Promotion unit announced several promotions: Garen van de Beek upped to SVP/On-Air Promotion while Paul Friedman, Chris Cranner, Lori Shefa and Brad Roe have all been upgraded to VPs/On-Air Promotion. Additionally, Sarah LaBrache was bumped to Director and Anne de Vega moves to Executive Producer.

TV One elevated Laura Lipson to VP/Marketing and Promotion to oversee the network’s on-air promotion efforts and to expand the network’s brand image through creative content for marketing programs and materials. She joined the network as Director/Marketing and Promotion just before TV One’s launch in fall 2003.

Rob Silvershein is the new Regional VP/Western Sales for Linkstorm based in Los Angeles. Rob will manage the company’s West Coast sales efforts and is charged with increasing the number of agency and corporate accounts in the financial, automotive, technology, travel, e-commerce and healthcare categories. He will report to Scott “Wax” Waxenberg, VP/Sales.

Andree de la Garza was appointed Marketing Director of National Geographic Adventure. Based in New York City, Andree will handle all marketing and promotions for the magazine.

Christopher Raleigh begins a new position with The Weather Channel Media Solutions as SVP/GSM, coming from GSN where he was SVP/Advertising Sales. In his new role, Christopher will oversee all TWC national sales offices while based at the network’s New York office. He will report to Paul Iaffaldano, EVP/GM, TWC Media Solutions.
