Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 31, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from the NATPE 2008 convention in Las Vegas.

National Geographic Channel Asia launches Nat Geo Junior, a new 1-hour weekday programming block that will air twice a day, beginning Monday, February 4 (10a and 5p), on National Geographic Channel.  Targeted to K7-16, the block aims to encourage kids to explore the world outside of school through a programming line-up features shows such as, I Don’t Know That (30×30), Mad Labs (20×30), and the new program Wild Detectives (10×30).  Wild Detectives joins the line-up on March 3.  Nat Geo Junior will be available in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and other ASEAN countries, where it is expected to reach 6+ million households.  The block is already available in India, Turkey and the Netherlands.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Beginning this week PBS and several of local member stations, including KQEX (San Francisco), WETA (Washington, DC), WGBH (Boston) and WNET (NYC), begin offering video clips and related materials for free on iTunes U area of the iTunes Store.  The initial PBS educational content includes educational video clips, lectures, interviews, teacher’s guides etc, is available in the Beyond Campus section of iTunes U.

The preschool series Raggs (195×30) begins airing public television stations in the US from Monday, February 4, 2008 (check local listings).  Distributed by American Public Television, Raggs is a mixed-costume character/animated, music-based series about five dogs that play together in a rock band. Commissioned by Seven Network Australia, where the series continues to air, Raggs is a co-production between Raggs LLC and Australia’s Southern Star International.  Raggs began airing on San Francisco’s public TV station KQED as a test market in June 2007.

Kidtoons and American Greetings present the animated movie Care Bears: Grizzle-ly Adventures in its theatrical debut this February 2008 at participating US movie theaters, as part of Kidtoons’ family-targeted matinee series.  Additionally, an episode of the animated property Maggie and the Ferocious Beast: Showers and Spring Flowers will run in theaters in front of the Care Bears special.  Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release the Care Bears title on DVD on February 5, while on the same date Shout Factory will release the Maggie and the Ferocious Beast title.  Kidtoons is a division of The Bigger Picture, which in turn is an AccessIT company.

France 3 acquires the rights to the first two seasons of the live-action comedy series Genie in the House (52×30).  A Nickelodeon UK and Canal J (France) series from Moi j’aime la television/Helion Pictures, Genie in the House will also be available at MIP-TV 2008 through worldwide rights holder AB Distribution.  The DVD rights are available through distributor Happy Audience.

MARKETING/LICENSING

LEGO Group and Warner Bros. Consumer Products enter into a contraction toy rights deal for the forthcoming live-action Speed Racer movie.  Under the deal LEGO will release four racing playsets, as part of its LEGO Racers brand, in April 2008.  The sets include a selection of LEGO mini figure versions of the Speed Racer characters.  Personally, I’ll be looking for the Racer X, Spritle and Chim-Chim figures.  The Speed Racer movie, from writers/directors Larry and Andy Wachowski and producer Joel Silver, is set for a May 9, 2008 release.

Brighter Minds Media, Inc is named as a licensee for DreamWorks Animation SKG’s upcoming animated feature film, Kung Fu Panda.  Under the deal Brighter Minds Media will release a series of kid’s novelty books in the US and Canada in May 2008.  Kung Fu Panda is set for a wide release on June 6, 2008.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Heroic Film Company forms an interactive and new media division, which will be headed by founding partner Karen Lee Hall. Executive Producers and founding partners John May and Suzanne Bolch will lead the TV division, with Jennifer Morrissette maintaining her role as Business Manager.
