Cynopsis: DIGITAL

01/27/11

Good morning, it’s Thursday, January 27, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Netflix continued its meteoric rise in the home entertainment business, posting a 34% increase in revenue to $596 million and a 52% jump in profit to $47 million. The company added over 3 million Q4 subscribers to put it over the 20 million subscriber mark, placing it second only to Comcast (23 million) in the subscription video business. (That may be comparing apples to oranges, given the vast difference in ARPU (Ave. Revenue Per Unit,) but at some point the relationship with the customer trumps all.) In fact most of company’s new subscribers sign up for the new $7.99/mo. streaming-only service, or the $10/mo. service that allows you to rent 1 DVD at a time. Next up for Netflix is to renew its distribution deal with Starz, which expires next winter and is expected to cost the company exponentially more in licensing fees.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Amazon has come up with a new short form digital format for the Kindle. Kindle Singles, priced at between $1-$5, will provide a platform for essays, ideas, memoirs and short stories that have been marginalized out of existence in modern publishing.

Disney-ABC TV Digital‘s official Oscar.com site will introduce new interactive features this year including a premium feature that allows fans to follow their favorite stars backstage and beyond. For $4.99, users will gain access to footage from the site’s “360 cam” – controlling multiple cameras with the click/drag functionality. “All-Access” coverage continues immediately following the Academy Awards presentation with peeks inside the Governor’s Ball.

Project Runway star Heidi Klum and the show’s producers Full Picture Entertainment are entering into a digital content partnership with AOL to create exclusive original programming for the portal focusing on fashion, beauty, parenting, arts and crafts, relationships and lifestyle. Heidi will host video content, contribute articles and pen blog entries that will live on AOL.com.

Showtime
is hosting a special webcast on Saturday Jan. 29 in which Dexter director/cinematographer Romeo Tirone and editor Louis Cioffi will share secrets of the blood-splattered show. The webcast, powered by Createasphere, starts at 11 a.m. PST, and is limited to the first 200 online attendees.

Financial site Forbes.com continues with its ongoing redesign with new “Channel” pages, broken into Business, Investing, Technology, Entrepreneurs, Op/Ed, Leadership, Lifestyle and Lists, as well as a newly redesigned Home Page.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

BBC Worldwide Productions is teaming with comedy site My Damn Channel to produce its first original web series featuring the comedy troupe The Lost Nomads. “Gigi: Almost American,” created by and starring Nomad member Josh Gad (“Love and Other Drugs,”) is a classic fish out of water tale parodying Gigi’s lack of street smarts, fashion sense and mastery of English.

Canadian online comedy series Moderation Town was named the winner of nextMEDIA Digital Launch Pad at the annual NATPE Conference in Miami. The 6-webisode show follows the lives of residents of a small Maritime town who turn to the internet content moderation business after their local factory shutters.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Earnings at Yahoo more than doubled during Q4 to $312 million as display advertising perked up, but the company warned of continued slowed growth and announced it would lay off an additional 1% of its workforce to help cut costs. (Yahoo has already laid off more than 700 workers in the past two months.) Revenue for the period fell 12% to $1.53 billion, from $1.73 billion a year earlier.

Cinema ad company Screenvision is enlisting the help of a group of stars who have ties to the Big Easy including John Goodman, James Carville, Harry Shearer and the Manning brothers for a new PSA and e-petition to raise support for Gulf Coast Restoration Efforts.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

A major focus of President Obama‘s State of the Union address on Tuesday night was technology and the role it will play in lifting the economic fortunes of America in the future. He cited Google and Facebook as examples of company’s that flourished in the free market, but called for investment in infrastructure including wiring rural America and expanding 4G wireless networks to cover 98% of Americans within 5 years. The latter promise indirectly hit upon the FCC‘s controversial proposal to convince broadcasters to auction off spectrum.

Speaking of which, Sen. John D. Rockefeller (D-W.V.), Chair of the Commerce, Science and Transportation committee, reintroduced a bill on Tuesday that would authorize and provide a framework for the FCC to conduct a voluntary auction of broadcast television spectrum for mobile internet services. The NAB has reluctantly supported such as measure, provided the “incentive auctions” are truly voluntary.

Live Nation Entertainment announced it will pay $22.3 million to settle its class-action lawsuit with Ticketmaster over exorbitant delivery fees charged by its recent acquired subsidiary, Ticketmaster. The lawsuit accused Ticketmaster of misleading customers by charging anywhere from $14.50 to $25 in “delivery fees,” which the suit alleged were designed to gouge consumers.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Boys are obsessed with playing games on digital devices but girls say they want to multitask, engaging in chat, game play, sharing and music at the same time, according to a new report from research firm PlayScience. Boys, aged 6-14, call and text on cell phones, interact on social networks and chat while gaming as much as girls, but they tend to spend much more time immersed in games. On the other hand, girls say they want to engage in a host in activities via consoles and mobile apps, but they too tend also primarily play games in practice. “We think that this disconnect speaks to the continued gap in the potential of console platforms, games, and applications in reaching girls,” says PlayScience president Dr. J. Alison Bryant.

Usage is up across the board on Twitter according to new research from Experian Simmons, with Americans spending an estimated 2 hrs and 12 min. tweeting and reading tweets on Twitter.com in Nov. 2010, up from 1 hr and 51 min. spent on the site during Nov. 2009. The ave. number of visits/month rose 37% y/y, but the duration of visits to the site declined from 15 minutes/visit in Nov. 2009 to 13 minutes/visit in Nov. 2010.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Emerging linear cable network WFN: World Fishing Network launched a new iPhone/iPad app available at the introductory price of $2.99. The app features a live, interactive map with pinpoint GPS; a link to check tide and weather information; a personalized supply checklist for trip planning and a photo gallery to organize every catch you make.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Caroline Marks
has been named GM, Parents and Lifestyle Digital by Meredith Corp., a newly created position overseeing the business strategy and product development for the publisher’s Parents Network of sites. She will report to Liz Schimel, EVP CRM & Digital.

Jonathan Friedland
, former SVP/Corporate Communications at Disney, has taken a job with Netflix Inc. as VP/Global Corporate Communications.

RadiumOne announced the opening of a London-based office and named former Specific Media SVP Rupert Staines as the new Managing Director of Europe. Rupert will lead all aspects of RadiumOne’s financial, strategy, and corporate development activities in the UK.

TV Ad network REVShare announced a reorg of its affiliate relations team: Chelle Lewis becomes VP/Global Affiliate Sales and will head the division, overseeing Matt Schulde, VP/National Accounts, and Shaia Ash, who was upped to Director/Network Operations. Chelle and Shaia will be based in the firm’s Temecula, CA headquarters while Matt will be based in New York.

Ad agency PM Digital hired Richard Chavez as Senior Director of SEO and John Iozzia as VP/Business Development. Richard will be based in Scottsdale, Arizona and John will be based in New York.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

One reason why the TV ratings for the State of the Union are declining (viewership to Tuesday night’s address was down 11% from President Obama’s State of the Union address last year, according to Nielsen) is that more viewers are turning to the internet to watch such events, where its easier to chime into Twitter feeds and interact with the broadcast. Kudos to White House staffers for putting together an engaging podcast of the speech at Whitehouse.gov. The site produced a live split-screen video of the speech featuring video of the address itself on the left and a steady stream of graphs and visuals on the right designed to explain and illustrate the rapid-fire points the President was making. (Such material may provide a glimpse into what future television broadcasts will look like, particularly for news and information-related programming.) In addition to a full transcript of the speech (which was leaked and circulated widely on the internet hours before the address), the site is also fielding questions from users this week, a selection of which will be answered in a series of live online events by President Obama and senior administration officials.
