Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 26, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Marathon Animation‘s futuristic series Team Galaxy (52 x 30 min) is set to debut on Cartoon Network fall 2006.  A mix of CGI and 2D animation Team Galaxy follows the lives of three friends, teens Josh and Yoko and, the smart beyond her years, 10yr-old Brett, all of whom straddle the difficult roles of being both a hero and tweens/teens.  The three friends along with their shape-shifting robotic dog Fluffy work together on their space missions to make the galaxy safe.  Marathon plans to launch a full licensing program based on the series featuring toys, books and interactive games.  Marathon’s other series Totally Spies also airs on Cartoon Network in the US.

Target Entertainment has signed an exclusive Latin American deal with Discovery Kids and a Pan European deal with Nickelodeon International for Chapman Entertainment‘s stop-motion animated preschool series Fifi and the Flowertots (52 x 10 min).  The Discovery Kids agreement covers 34 countries throughout Latin America, while the Nickelodeon deal includes Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and Benelux.  Both groups plan to begin airing the series in the first part of 2006.  Fifi and the Flowertots was introduced to the kid market in 2004 and has since launched in 100+ territories and developed a licensing program.

MARKETING/LICENSING

2K Sports, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., has released Torino 2006 – The Official Video Game of the XX Olympic Winter Games in North America, and will be available at retail in Europe on January 27th.  The game was published by 2K Sports through a partnership with International Sports Multimedia, the exclusive licensee of the International Olympic Committee for interactive entertainment software.  Torino 2006 has a multiplayer mode for up to four players and, as you might have guessed, lets gamers participate in various Olympic events, either head-to-head or in turn-based play.  Torino 2006 features 15 different events in 8 winter sports (skiing, biathlon, bobsled, luge and skating), each with three difficulty levels with expert commentators, TV camera angles covering their every move.  Released for PC, PS2 and Xbox, the game is rated E for Everyone in North America and PEGI 3+ in Europe.  And lest ye have forgotten the XX Olympic Winter Games will take place in Torino, Italy from February 10-26, 2006, so get practicing!

Target Entertainment Ltd, a rights managements company, has inked an exclusive licensing agreement with 3H Group Pty Ltd, to represent 3H’s interactive online brand, MeeGos.  Targeted to kids/tweens 8-14, MeeGos, which derives from the word “Amigo,” are customizable characters created by kids to use in emailing and IM’ing friends to communicate their emotions (also known as avatars).  Target is looking to extend MeeGos through deals in a range merchandise categories including apparel, accessories, stationery, gifts and novelties, with a secondary collection developed specifically for the student market.  MeeGos have been released in Europe, the US, Latin America and Australasia and have to date have registered 11+ million members with 23 lives sites in 16 languages.

McDonald’s will feature characters from Strawberry Shortcake and the animated series Dragon Booster in its kid meals beginning January 27 through February 23, 2006.  Kids will receive on of eight Strawberry Shortcake characters or one of eight Dragon Booster action figures with the purchase of either a Happy Meal or a Mighty Kids Meal.  The Strawberry Shortcake figures are the first scented characters to be offered in the history of McDonald’s Happy Meals

Correction :  The star of Ellen’s Acres, the new series picked up by Cartoon Network, is indeed 5-year old Ellen, and not Emily.

STONE SOUP

National Geographic Digital Media has changed the name of its footage service from National Geographic Television Film Library to National Geographic Digital Motion.  The service licenses National Geographic Television and Film’s film and videotape in digital and analog formats. The name change coincides with the launch of the ngdigitalmotion.com website that allows visitors to view a range of video projects featuring National Geographic footage as well as screen demos and search stock footage content.  Later this year the site will feature enhanced searching capabilities for individual footage shots, complete with full rights information and visuals for every shot.  National Geographic Digital Media publishes Nationalgeographic.com; manages marketing and content partnerships across broadband, mobile, gaming and other consumer digital platforms; and provides video and film footage to commercial, theatrical, education and other digital footage markets.  Digital Motion agents also represent peer-level archives, in select territories, from around the world, including Australian Broadcasting Corporation, INA of France, National Film Board of Canada, the White House Historical Association, WPA Film Library, ZDF Enterprises of Germany and the World Bank.

Casting: Just like Mel Brooks’ The Producers, Hairspray was a movie first, then a Broadway musical, and is now making its way back to Hollywood as a musical feature film.  New Line Cinema, which distributed John Waters’ movie Hairspray the first time around back in 1988, has launched a nationwide casting search to fill three roles, including the lead role of Tracy Turnblad, in its new movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Hairspray.  In addition to the role of Tracy, the producers are looking for actors to take on the roles of Seaweed and Li’l Inez.  The casting search begins in earnest February 4 with an open call audition in Atlanta, on the campus of Georgia State University, followed by another on February 11, in NY at the Hilton Theatre Rehearsal Studios, and then in Chicago on February 18, at the Chicago Academy of Arts.  Details about the casting call, including audition applications, are available at www.hairspraymovie.com . Hairspray is being directed by Adam Shankman and produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the producers of movie adaptation of Chicago.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

MTV is splitting its creative programming folks into two groups, as it pushes its multi-platform and multi-media agenda and further refines itself following the recent Viacom and CBS division.  Of the two divisions in the creative reorg, one will focus on short-form video, music and news programming content for TV as well as online, VOD, broadband, wireless and other digital platforms.  The other will focus long-form programming (hour and half hour programs) for TV.  Okay, here is how it all shakes out in terms of executives and their roles by division:

  • Dave Sirulnick has been appointed EVP/MTV Multiplatform Production, News & Music.  In this new role the inimitable Sirulnick will bridge the three areas overseeing the development and production of music and short form content for the various platforms under the MTV brand.  Sirulnick, who was formerly EVP/News & Production, will team with Ben White, VP/Digital Media, and Jason Hirschhorn, MTVN Chief Digital Officer. Sirulnick will continue to report into Brian Graden, President/Entertainment, MTV Networks Music Group, and President/Logo.  Amy Doyle has been upped to SVP/Music & Talent, now heading up MTV’s music strategy and record label and artist relations.  Peter Baron, VP/Label Relations, MTV & MTV2 expand his role to include programming responsibilities for VOD, MHD, MTV’s new HD network.  Baron and Joanna Bomberg, VP/Music & Talent, MTV, will report to Doyle.  Tony DiBari moves up to SVP/Production. MTV News will continue to be overseen by Ocean MacAdams, VP/MTV News.
  • Lois Curren, in her new role as EVP/MTV Series Entertainment & Programming, will be responsible for all long-form TV development and programming for MTV, continuing to report to Graden.  In Curren’s division are Tony DiSanto, upped to EVP/Series Development & Animation, expanding his responsibilities to include become Head of Programming for MTV2.  SVP/Programming, MTV2, Carol Eng will now report into DiSanto.
  • Additionally, Paul DeBenedittis has been upped to EVP/Multiplatform Programming, Content Strategy & Scheduling, and is charged with dovetailing the entire bifurcated group into a cohesive unit. DeBenedittis will be responsible for strategically programming and scheduling MTV’s short-form and long-form content on the appropriate platform.  Previously SVP/Program Planning & Scheduling, DeBenedittis will share a report into both Sirulnick and Curren.
