A little good news for striking WGA writers – NBC and Universal Media Studios will not pull the plug on its script orders for the 2008-09 season, scripts the writers didn’t have a chance to deliver before the strike was called.  This is contrary to the announcements from other broadcast networks who pulled back on dozens of early script orders.

Bravo’s culinary series Top Chef returns for season four March 12 at 10p, this time in Chicago. During this new season, 16 aspiring chefs will compete in the Windy City for the grand prize and the chance to be called “Top Chef.” Host Padma Lakshmi will be back for Top Chef: Chicago along with judges Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons and Ted Allen.

GAC opens a new series Introducing … on February 24 at 930p, giving country music fans an inside look at their favorite performers and their road to becoming famous. Episode one will be about new star Luke Bryan.

A handful of CBS scheduling notes:

  • CBS will debut the pilot of Dexter, the Showtime drama about a forensics expert who happens to be a serial killer, on February 17 at 10p.
  • Power of 10 comes off the CBS schedule effective immediately, and will replace the time period with a variety of sitcoms (all repeats), reports Variety. Look for Power of 10 to return this summer.
  • Price is Right returns to primetime with Drew Carey, starting Friday, February 22 at 8p.  That scheduling move will push Ghost Whisperer back to 9p, and Moonlight goes on hiatus.

TBS will introduce its new BITCOMS this month to compliment its line-up of comedies. A BITCOM is a :30 commercial adjacency within sitcoms on TBS, each including an original stand-up routine that also integrates an advertiser, followed by a :30 commercial from the sponsor. I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! will begin its BITCOMS this week during Everybody Loves Raymond. 

Starz Entertainment signed deals with five major studios for new film content including exclusive first-run output agreements with Disney-ABC Domestic Television and Sony Pictures Television until 2012 and 2013 respectively. Other deals comprised of movie library acquisitions from Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, MGM Worldwide Television Group and Universal Pictures which will provide nearly 1,200 films and TV series. The agreements also give Starz Entertainment the ability to offer content on multiple distribution outlets including its 16 linear channels, HD, Starz On Demand, Starz Play and Vongo.

On January 27, Discovery Times Channel will transition into Investigation Discovery (ID), focused on investigative and current affairs content. Kicking off the revamped network will be the premiere of Fugitive Strike Force January 29 at 10p and Dateline on ID January 30 at 10p.

A handful of pre-NATPE announcements –

  • Meredith Corporation sold its daily one-hour lifestyle program, Better to LIN TV Corp., Northwest Broadcasting and Fisher Communications stations, adding 12 new markets across the US. Fisher stations will add the show in March, and LIN and Northwest stations will launch it this fall. Presently, Better airs on ten Meredith stations and three Journal stations.
  • Twentieth Television, Inc. reupped The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet for the 2008-2009 season. The live daily talk show has now cleared in the top 15 markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia. 
  • Mighty Oak Entertainment has cleared its weekly comedy clip series, Whacked Out Sports in 85% of the U.S. for a third season. Mighty Oak Entertainment also fully owns and executive produces the series.
  • Litton Entertainment will launch Better Living this March, a series of daily one-minute news segments exclusive to one station in each market. Presented by TV news reporter/host Jill Cordes, each of the 260 Better Living reports will focus on environmentally-friendly tips to help viewers live healthier, save money and reduce their environmental footprints.
  • Nationally syndicated series, The Martha Stewart Show was renewed for a fourth season in 85% of the country by NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution. The daily how-to series was sold to the NBC Local Media stations in multiple markets as well as to stations from Fox, Belo, Fisher, Scripps, Hearst, Allbritton, LIN, Young, Raycom and Clear Channel among others.


TNT has ordered up ten episodes of a new project from Steven Bochco called Raising the Bar, produced by ABC Studios and Bochco Media.  The legal drama stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Gloria Ruben and Jane Kaczmarek, about a public defender looking to help the down trodden.

MTV Networks’ Entertainment Group made a talent and development pact with videogame journalist Geoff Keighley, host of Spike TV’s Game Head which returns on Spike TV this Friday renamed as GameTrailers TV with Geoff Keighley. Geoff will serve as executive producer on the revamped show and will also begin a development deal with Spike to create new programming for the network, be a consultant on the annual Video Game Awards show on Spike and host several specials. Geoff will continue hosting and producing Bonus Round, GameTrailers online talk show focused on the videogame industry.

Fox‘s sci fi drama project Fringe has cast two of its three lead roles with John Noble and Lance Reddick, reports THR.  The Warner Bros. TV and Bad Robot project is about scientist, an agent from Homeland Security and FBI agent all working on the paranormal.  Noble plays the scientist; Reddick the agent from Homeland security.  The female FBI agent has not yet been cast.

Casting Call: Casting for NBC’s America’s Got Talent begins immediately in 13 cities: Orlando, Nashville, Charlotte, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, New Orleans, Brandon, Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. acquisition launched a free ad supported on demand music streaming platform, signing deals with all 4 major labels and another 150,000 indie outfits to offer social listeners some 3.5 million different tracks to choose from.’s software prohibits its 15 million users from listening to tracks more than 3 times before purchasing them from partners including iTunes or Amazon. (But then again log-ins aren’t initially required, so anyone who knows how to delete cookies can get around this.) The site also provides unsigned artists with a way to reach listeners through viral recommendations, and just like their label partners, earn royalties on per-download basis. Advertisers will be able to reach listeners based on years of user data. It will be interesting to see if video becomes the next frontier for CBS has said it hopes to use the site to build new communities around Viacom as well as non-Viacom video content.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: ReelTime Rentals, inc., the broadband video rental service, has entered into a deal with Sony Pictures Television under which Sony will provide a range of feature films to ReelTime.  The list of movies that will join ReelTime’s roster is comprised of titles across genres and new releases, including youth oriented Surf’s Up and Spider-Man 3.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

Tuesday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX notched another Tuesday night win at 8.4/20 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX commanded the 8p hour with American Idol at 11.7/29 and again at 9p with a House repeat with less than half the ratings at 5.1/12.  NBC then took the reins at 10p as Law & Order: SVU won with 4.6/12.

Adina Pitt moved into the position of VP/Content Acquisitions and Co-Productions for Cartoon Network and Boomerang. Adina is charged with identifying, negotiating and acquiring pre-produced series, specials, movies and short-form programming for the two networks to fit all platforms, then overseeing all programs once they have been purchased and positioned at the networks. She will also be the liaison with the international Cartoon Network and Boomerang networks to handle global acquisition deals, in addition to representing the U.S. networks at all major conferences such as MIPTV, MIPCOM, Kidscreen and NATPE. Based in New York, she will report direct to Robert Sorcher, Chief Content Officer, Cartoon Network. ooooo … well done, Ms. Pitt!

Linda Carrasquillo is the new VP/Entertainment at management agency RLR Associates. In her new role, Linda will spearhead the development and pitching of programs in all genres to cable, broadcast and network television. In addition, Linda will serve as Executive Producer and Executive in Charge of Development on several shows. Her duties will also encompass the development and management of the agency’s talent roster and directors and all current programming projects.

B. Smith Enterprises, the restaurateur, media and lifestyle brand, tapped Russell Brown as President/Development and Merchandising to increase the company’s licensing business and expand its retail presence. Russell will report to Robert Petisi, CEO.

Prime Visibility Media Group purchased two online companies, AdOn Network and Prime Visibility and has formed a new division, PV Media Group as a result. Leading this new division and its senior management team as CEO will be Steve Rosenberg, who previously was President at Universal Domestic Television and Co-President of Universal Television Distribution.  Congrats Steve!  PVMG also named Seth Page as COO and Richard O’Connnor as CFO.

Turner Entertainment Promotions and Marketing division promoted two executives, Patty Gillette to VP/Promotions Management and Michelle Spinale to VP/Promotions Development. Patty will supervise all promotions management on TBS, TNT, truTV and each network’s digital properties. Michelle will manage a staff which is focused on creating new client opportunities and strategic partnerships for increased revenue on behalf of the same networks. Both are located in New York and report to Katherine Johnson, SVP/Turner Entertainment Promotions and Marketing.

Former Weather Channel VOD Director, Brad Grant will now be the Director/VOD for Turner Network Sales (TNS). Brad will support the team that distributes Turner’s VOD offerings and will manage the operations of Turner’s VOD platform. Based in Atlanta, he will report to Heather Baldino, SVP/Network Marketing and Operations, TNS.
