Cynopsis: Kids!
01/21/10
Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 21, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Kid, tween and teen media use has “risen dramatically” over five years ago according to Generation M2: Media in the Lives of 8- to 18-Year-Olds, a new study released by the Kaiser Family Foundation. The study of 2,000+ students nationwide found that kids/teens 8-18 devote an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes (7:38) a day (53+ hours a week) using various entertainment media (TV, video games, computers, MP3 players, cell phones and other mobile devices etc). Given that much of that 7:38 kids/teens were media multitasking, researchers estimate that it is more like kids are spending 10 hours 45 minutes a day using media. These numbers are all up + one hour and 17 minutes per day over five years ago when the last study was conducted, with multitasking estimates up just over two hours, from 8:33 to 10:45. The newest study, the third in a series (199, 2004, and 2009), credits the increase, at least in part, in mobile device ownership with the increase in kid/teen media use, specifically cell phones, up from 39% to 66%, and iPods/MP3 players up from 18% to 76%, both devices that allow users to listen, play and watch content. Though researches cannot establish a cause and effect relationship, the study did find that heavy media users (kids spending 16+ hours of media per day) are getting lower grades (mostly Cs or lower). Additionally, the report also points to a “substantial” difference in kid’s media consumption among various ethnic and racial group. Black and Hispanic kids consume upwards of 4.5 hours more media daily, breaking down to about 13 hours of total media exposure for each Hispanics and Blacks, versus 8:36 for Whites. As for TV, the study found that traditional “regularly scheduled TV” declined by 25-minutes from five years ago, but watching TV via other devices pushed actual TV consuming up from 3:51 to 4:29 per day, which includes 24 minutes of online viewing, 16 on iPods/MP3s, and 15 on cell phones. More information about the study can be found at www.kff.org/entmedia/mh012010pkg.cfm .
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Mondo TV Group inks a deal to produce and distribute an animated TV series based on the toy line Puppy In My Pocket. Mondo TV will co-produce the Puppy In My Pocket (52×13) series with property creator MEG and toy company Giochi Preziosi. Featuring a production budget of US$ 7.3 million, the series is scheduled to premiere in Italy and Spain (broadcast negotiations are underway) during holiday 2010, and worldwide in 2011. Additionally MEG and Giochi Preziosi will also develop and distribute a new Puppy In My Pocket toy line, based on the series, as well as manage the worldwide licensing rights. The Puppy In My Pocket brand made its initial debut in the early 1990s.
It’s official; Sony Pictures/Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios‘ new rebooted live-action Spider-Man movie will be directed by Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer), which is slated for a summer 2012 release. You’ll recall that earlier this month Sam Raimi, who directed the first two live-action Spider-Man movies, exited the project along with star Tobey Maguire, when the studios decided to go with a “small, intimate human story about an everyday teenager that takes place in an epic super-human world.”
MORE KIDS STUFF
World Wrestling Entertainment’s WWE Studios plans to self-distribute and market its upcoming slate of nine feature films through 2012, beginning with this summer’s drama Brother Keeper and followed in fall 2010 by the family-targeted comedy, Knucklehead. Samuel Goldwyn Films will serve as WWE Studios’ theatrical distribution partner in the US, while Vivendi Entertainment will be its domestic DVD distribution partner. International DVD distribution will be handled by WWE’s existing TV and video partners worldwide.
Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog) stars as Dr. Blowhole, a wicked dolphin, in DreamWorks Animation‘s The Penguins of Madagascar special, Dr. Blowhole’s Revenge (1×30), which premieres on Nickelodeon, Monday, February 15 at 8p. In the special Dr. Blowhole goes up against the Penguins who have continually foiled his plans to rule the world. Leading up to the special’s debut, from February 8-15, Nick.com will launch the new game The Penguins of Madagascar The Rise of Blowhole. The game sends players on four missions with the Penguins and battle Dr. Blowhole. To access the fourth and final game mission fans will need a special code that will be featured during the on-air premiere of the special.
Canada’s Family Channel is set to premiere Disney Channel‘s new live-action comedy I’m in the Band on Monday, February 15 at 8p. The series will be available on Family OnDemand from Tuesday, February 9. Following the network debut, I’m in the Band will air regularly Saturdays and Sundays at 9a, beginning February 20.
The Walt Disney Company EMEA unveils that a localized European version of Disney XD‘s sports reality program, Next X (interstitials and 1×30 special), will debut on Disney XD across EMEA in April 2010. This version of Next X follows six kids from across Europe with extreme skiing and snowboarding skills as are mentored by some of the top athletes in their field and compete to be the Next X star. The kids are vying for a change to perform alongside the world’s best skiers and boarders at ESPN’s Winter X Games Europe in Tignes, France in March 2010. Check out www.disneyxd.co.uk to follow the series via photos and video beginning this week. A two-week competition will also launch on March 6, 2010.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Yen Press, the graphic novel imprint of Hachette Book Group, will publish the first volume of the graphic novelization of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight on March 16, 2010. Twilight: The Graphic Novel, Volume 1 includes select text from Meyer’s Twilight novel and illustrations by Korean artist Young Kim. Volume one will release in hardcover ($19.99) with a first printing of 350,000 copies. There is no official date yet for the release of the second volume of the Twilight graphic novel. The graphic novel adaptation of Twilight is split into two volumes due to the length of the original Twilight novel.
Cookie Jar Entertainment partners with Jirbo, a developer of mobile applications, to release two new Johnny Test games for iPhone/iTouch. The two kid-targeted game apps, Johnny Test Clone Zapper (free) and Johnny Test Bot Drop ($.99), are available for download via iTunes. Johnny Test currently airs on Cartoon Network.
