Break Media, a creator and publisher of male-targeted digital video content, launches its new Social Video Accelerator, designed around the trend of Cost per View (CPV) advertising technology. The CPV model charges advertisers based on how many times their video advertisement is actually viewed. The Social Video Accelerator combines video distribution with a group of social analytics to maximize view and pass-along of advertiser content, such as trailers and videos as well as branded entertainment content created in partnership with Break Media’s in-house production studio Creative Lab. The Social Video Accelerator debuts across Break Media’s sites, including its comedy video site Break.com and the Break Media Network, which reaches 120+ million unique viewers per month.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

USA Network launched two new digital initiatives celebrating the mid-season return of White Collar earlier this week. The first component was a six-week game that tests players skills to see if they are ready to partner with Mozzie to locate a hidden stash, utilizing memory, attention to detail and ability to solve riddles. When all six of the challenges are completed, a secret sweepstakes will be unlocked. The network also debuted a new White Collar SideShow app that allows viewers to comment on what’s happening on the show, get trivia, share quotes, answer polls, and check-in to get exclusive badges.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Streamworks inks a deal with Level 3 Communications to use its content delivery network (CDN), which will allow Streamworks to deliver live, uncut video news feeds to digital publisher across its breaking news video service, Associated Press Television News (APTN). The Associated Press (AP, which launched its live broadcasting via satellite in 2003, partnered with Streamworks last year to employ its proprietary encoding technology to deliver excellent quality to online, mobile and tablet devices. Streamworks is part of Black Ocean, a digital media company, group of companies.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

New research from Nielsen says the fall 2011 launch of Apple’s iPhone 4S has had a big impact on smartphone purchases. Among recent purchasers, those who bought a new mobile device within the last three months, 44.5% of those surveyed in December said they selected an iPhone compared to just 25.1% in October. Even more specifically, 57% of new iPhone owners surveyed in December said they got an iPhone 4S. Android continues to be the leader among all smartphone users with 46.3% of all smartphone owners surveyed in fourth quarter 2011 saying they have an Android-based mobile phone. According to reports from fourth quarter 2011, 46% of US mobile consumers say they own smartphones and that number is rapidly rising. Furthermore, 60% of those who bought a new mobile device within the last three months said they chose a smartphone over a feature phone.

At the NRF 101st Annual Convention & Expo, retailer Best Buy revealed the company’s mobile strategies. In the panel discussion “Has mobile marketing revolutionized shopper engagement?” executives from Best Buy, Shopkick and Simon Brand Ventures, owners and operators of 300 malls in the US, talked about certain challenges they face when trying to bridge mobile with bricks-and-mortar stores as well as online commerce. For Best Buy, mobile is still used mainly as a communication tool and their strategy is focused in three targeted areas: enhance the store experience, focus on contextual and local information and thirdly, to allow commerce to happen anywhere a consumer is shopping. Best Buy debuted Shopkick technology in 2010 to reward shoppers for visiting their stores. Best Buy also uses QR codes, mobile apps and a mobile website to help consumers find electronics while on the go.

Sony is counting on the company’s new Mobile Communications division in an effort to integrate its products and leverage the entire Sony brand. A new CNN article states that the corporation is expected to place Sony’s Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services as well as The PlayStation Network into the Sony Network for all mobile platforms. In addition, Sony Mobile developers are developing a feature that will let people project a video from their Sony phone’s screen to their Sony television set, according to company executives.

Georgia’s first domestic DTH platform is set to make its grand debut on Jan. 23. The platform, called MagtiSat, will employ Astra transponders and broadcast in the DVB-S2 standard and MPEG-4 encoding, to offer viewers a total of 75 TV channels in three packages – start, basic and HD.

Social media program managers are finding new ways to deal with customer interaction as they oversee an increasing number of social media accounts, according to a new study by The Altimeter Group, per eMarketer. The advisory firm’s Q2 2011 survey found that, on average, companies owned 178 social media accounts across the corporation, including an average of 39.2 Twitter accounts, 31.9 blogs and 29.9 Facebook accounts. Forums and message boards were more popular than YouTube, with an average of 23.4 accounts per company, compared to YouTube’s 9.4. Monitoring several social networks, different accounts and pages, and responding to comments take time and resources, Altimeter said. Of the social media program managers surveyed, 59% said they will streamline the internal processes for handling social media conversations, 44% want to encourage customers to respond to one another and 33% plan to use new monitoring technologies. But many also said they didn’t know how they would respond to an increasing number of customer conversations.

~GADGETS & APPS~

MTV is launching a new app designed to connect students to dollars, teaming with Get Schooled and the College Board for My College Dollars. The app will take information from a user’s Facebook profile, using elements such as age, gender and state, and then connect the student with potential financial aid opportunities. The service will also offer info, guidance and tools designed to help users make decisions to pay for college. To promote the launch, the companies created “The My College Dollars Sweepstakes,” offering a trip and gift cards for early adopters. More info can be found at mycollegedollars.com.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

The Hollywood Radio and Television Society (HRTS) welcomes three new members to its Board of Directors. Joining the HRTS Board are Paul Buccieri, ITV Studios International Managing Director and President & CEO, ITV Studios America, Michael Kassan, MediaLink Founder and Eileen O’Neill, Group President, Discovery and TLC Networks. Buccieri, Kassan, and O’Neill have all been appointed for a two-year term running 2012-2014.

TV advertising company PrecisionDemand names advertising veteran Jon Mandel as its CEO. Mandel takes over the CEO reins from Tyson Roberts, who will now serve as PrecisionDemand’s Chief Revenue Officer. Mandel has served on PrecisionDemand’s Board of Directors since August 2011. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Proximic, and in various board roles for companies including Loop, Analytics, Akoo International, eXelate, and Indoor Direct. Mandel’s previous leadership positions include as CEO of NielsenConnect, and for more than a decade as Chairman and CEO of Mediacom. He also toiled in various roles for 22-years with Grey Advertising, including Director/National Broadcast.
