CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

01/19/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 19, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

New CBS News President Sean McManus said yesterday in Pasadena at the TCA press tour, that he’s looking for a new single anchor for CBS Evening News.  With that, he also refused to discuss Katie Couric, though he did say the new anchor would be a new hire for CBS and that he is working with a short list of candidates.

*MORE GOOD STUFF*WE: Womens’ Entertainment will launch its first-ever mobile marketing campaign with ipsh! mobile marketing and its new show, Style Me with Rachel Hunter.  The show is set to debut on January 23, and on that date consumers will also be able to receive personal weekly style tips from Hunter via their mobile phone. The campaign runs thru March 1st.  Signing up is easy – go to www.we.tv and you’ll be instructed from there.

TLC announced its new documentary series Forty Days, Forty Nights (working title) about men and women who are preparing to live at a monastery for 40 days.  Scheduled to premiere in June, the show follows two groups of men and women who separately live, study, work and think with all-male and all-female monastic orders.None of the participants know in advance the particulars of where they will go and what they will do on a daily basis, but all of them know they will live in a monastery where they will be subject to the rules and traditions of monastic life. Forty Days, Forty Nights is produced by Tiger/Tigress Productions for TLC.

DirecTV will launch its own family friendly programming tier, the DirectTV Total Choice Family package, comprised of 40+ channels.  Scheduled to take off in the spring, the package will include both broadcast and cable channels.

Also jumping into the pond is EchoStar Communications who is expected to announce its entry into the family programming package arena for DISH Network.

NickToons will launch its first original production as a global deal, Kappa Mikey, on February 25 at 8p.  From Larry Schwarz of Animation Collective, Kappa Mikey will also begin airing on all of the Nick international channels this spring.  Kappa Mikey is about an American actor who becomes a huge Japanese anime star.  Nicktoons is currently available in 36 million households.

Q Television Network is partnering with Mobile Accord to debut a new mobile channel named QTN Mobile.  The channel will be launched today at the Sundance Film Festival.  It will use SMS text messaging-based solutions as another avenue for audience interaction with QTN.  The network will also use the technology to bring in wireless fundraising programs at GLBT festivals in 10 major metro areas markets during 2006.

NBC Universal  will acquire KDEN/Denver from Longmont Channel 25, Inc. and Longmont Broadcasting, LLC.  The Telemundo station will become the 17th Spanish-language TV station owned/operated by NBC Universal Television Stations.  The final sale is pending awaiting FCC approval of the license’s transfer.  Clara Rivas was named as KDEN’s VP/GM. Denver is the 16th largest Hispanic market with Hispanics comprising close to 20% of its population.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *ABC has ordered up four pilots, all from Touchstone TV:

  • Sixty Minute Man is a drama project about a guy who loses an hour each day, no memory whatsoever, leaving he and his family to wonder if he isn’t involved in some sort of bizarre national conspiracy. This project is from exec producers Chris Brancato, Bert Salke and Graham Yost.
  • Day Break – think The Fugitive with the cop being the guy on the run, and while he’s running he’s also attempting to thwart the murder of someone else and find the guy that framed him. This project comes from exec producer Matt Gross and writer Paul Zbyszewski.
  • Brothers & Sisters is described as a primetime soap focused on adult siblings, exec produced by Ken Olin and written by Jon Robin Baitz.
  • Our Thirties is a comedy project from Warren Littlefield and writer Dave Walpert about a group of friends, in their 30’s, who are managing life and living in San Francisco.

CBS comedy pilot The Class has cast Jason Ritter in the lead role of Ethan.  The story begins at a party Ethan throws for his girlfriend.  They met in the third grade and the party includes six others from the same 3rd grade class.  The cast also includes Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Lucy Punch.

Amazon is getting into the series business, launching Amazon Fishbowl with Bill Maher on June 1st, with guests Stephen King, musician Rob Thomas, screenwriter Armistead Maupin and actress Toni Collette.  The taping of the first episode will be this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival.  The 30m show will be available via streaming video at the Amazon site.
