Good Morning, it’s  Thursday, January 18, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing, from the NATPE Convention in Las Vegas.

By the close of business yesterday, two bids were submitted to Tribune – one from Eli Broad and Ronald W. Burkle, and one from the Chandler family who are already Tribune’s largest shareholders.  The offer from Broad and Burkle is to recapitalize the company with an infusion of $500 million, for which the bidders would receive 31% of the company.  The remaining 69% would remain with the current stockholders. According to reports, the bid also includes nearly $11 billion in debt and an offer to give Tribune shareholders $27/share as a cash dividend, and leaving them with a $7/share equity, pegging the company value at $34 a share, up from where Tribune closed yesterday at $30.34.  An unfinalized offer from the Chandlers couples the family with a group of private equity investors and together they would buy the Tribune newspapers, leaving Tribune to sell off its TV stations.  What didn’t happen was a bid that offered to buy the entire company as a unit. A board meeting is planned for this weekend to review both bids.

Tonight’s Finale:
MTV: Real World/Road Rules Challenge at 10p

For those of you who zoned out, FOX’s American Idol debuted Tuesday night and had the highest premiere ratings in the show’s history as 37.3 million total viewers tuned in. Hello!  That’s 37.3 million! In addition to the A18-49 and household numbers reported in today’s chart, American Idol delivered a 14.8/38 among A18-34. Tuesday night’s season premiere was also the series’ second highest-rated telecast ever with A18-49, A18-34 and total viewers and ties with X Files from Nov 1997 as FOX’s highest-rated premiere ever among A18-49.

CBS’ Survivor will continue for two more editions, specifically the 15th and 16th editions, during the 2007-2008 season. This past fall, Survivor: Cook Islands averaged a 5.5/15 with A18–49 and a 6.8/16 among A25-54.

After debuting for a one-week run prior to Christmas, NBC has picked up the game show Identity as a series with a premiere date scheduled for sometime in March. The one-hour game show averaged a 3.2/9 among A18-49 and pulled in 9.3 million total viewers. Furthermore, NBC has renewed the comedies The Office and My Name Is Earl as well as the dramas Heroes and Law & Order: SVU for the 2007-2008 season. No surprises there.

NATPE Syndication Update:

  • CBS Television Distribution‘s Rachael Ray has been renewed through the 2009-2010 season in approximately 70% of the US. Twenty-three of the top 25 markets have cleared the show including WABC/NY, and stations owned by Fox Television Stations, Meredith, Cox Communications, Hearst-Argyle Television, LIN Television, Jefferson-Pilot Communications and Sinclair Broadcast Group.
  • Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! are now cleared in nearly 60% of the U.S. through the 2011-2012 season. Currently, Wheel has cleared in 17 of the top 20 markets, and Jeopardy! has cleared in 16 of the top 20 markets.
NBC brings another reality series from across the pond having ordered six episodes of a new improvisational comedy called Thank God You’re Here from FremantleMedia North America. The one-hour show begins production immediately and features celebrities competing to see who can improvise the best in an unknown situation. Each one is given a costume and a prop and they have to improvise a comedy scene already in progress after being greeted with the line “Thank God you’re here.” David Alan Grier will host and Dave Foley will judge the performances. The show’s format originally debuted in Australia in 2004 from Working Dog Productions, where the show is in its third season.

Court TV has reupped its original series Murder By The Book for a second season which has best-selling mystery authors putting forth their own perspectives on true-crime cases that intrigue them. The series is produced by Digital Ranch for Court TV.

DIY Network will debut a new series Wasted Spaces on January 24 at 9p that shows viewers how to use space already existing in their homes. The show will air on Wednesdays at 9p and at 930p.

Just yesterday a reader asked me “what happened to Daybreak?”, and now we know.  ABC will put the show online, where the remaining six so-far-unseen episodes can be seen.  They will begin streaming the eps as of January 29, beginning with the first episode.

mtvU, the 24/7 college network under the MTV umbrella and a division of Viacom Inc. has an agreement to acquire, a web site that houses more than 6.6 million user-generated ratings of 900,000 college profs, reaching approximately 10 million college students annually. mtvU adds this site along with its own and the recently purchased College Publisher network of 500+ online college newspapers to its stable of college-focused web sites.

UTA Online, the broadband unit of the talent and literary agent United Talent Agency is teaming with Veoh Networks, Inc. to launch a branded UTAO channel on Veoh next month which will spotlight emerging new talent and content created by current UTAO clients. Veoh users will have the chance to submit, view and share content on the ad-supported channel.

A three-way partnership has formed between the Warner Bros. Television Group, The CW and Sprint surrounding a new animated wireless series short based on the drama Smallville. The six-episode series produced for mobile and wireless is called Smallville Legends: The Oliver Queen Chronicles and it premieres today exclusively on the Sprint TVSM mobile video service. A new episode will debut each Thursday and be available via Sprint for the 6-week run of the series. Afterwards, the series will be available for streaming at starting February 22.

Joining the cast of NBC’s Law & Order: SVU is Adam Beach as a series regular in the role of Detective Chester Lake.  Fans of the show were first introduced to the Lake character this past week, a detective from Brooklyn.

Two pilot orders for ABC:
–From Sony Pictures TV, a comedy called American Family. You know the story – family looks stable and healthy from the outside, but chaos rules behind closed doors.
–An untitled Rina Mimoun comedy pilot about a top level attorney who moves her practice from the big city to a much smaller Georgia city and join up with her father’s law practice. This pilot is from Warner Bros. TV.

NBC has ordered up a Tom Fontana/Barry Levinson drama called M.O.N.Y., from NBC Universal TV Studio.  Also for NBC, a comedy called Area 52 about a space alien who the government is watching very carefully as he goes about his business in Arizona.  This project is also from NBC Universal TV.

Casting Call: City Lights Television is searching for a competent female carpenter to appear in the second season of HGTV’s Don’t Sweat It. The woman should look 25 to 35 years old and can be of any ethnicity, but must be based in New York or willing to commute. She will manage home improvement projects that include installing shelves to building a tree house. Previous on-camera experience is preferred and the woman must be skilled in all areas of carpentry. Photos and resumes can be submitted immediately to [email protected] and auditions will happen next week.
