Cynopsis: Sports
01.17.13

Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 17, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Perhaps no one is happier to see the NHL return than the regional sports networks, who are only now rolling out plans for the season, which starts on Saturday. Here’s a look at the slates for some of the US-based RSNs for the Eastern Conference this year. We’ll tackle the Western Conference tomorrow.

New Jersey: MSG Networks is on deck to showcase 41 of the 48 New Jersey Devils games. Steve Cangialosi will return for his second season as the Devils play-by-play announcer and will be joined by game analyst Glenn ‘Chico’ Resch.

Islanders: MSG Networks will carry 46 of the 48 New York Islanders games with Howie Rose entering his 18th season as the Islanders’ play-by-play announcer and joined by game analyst Butch Goring.

Rangers: MSG Networks delivers 41 of the 48 New York Rangers games. Sam Rosen returns for his 29th season as the play-by-play voice and will be joined for the seventh season by in-game analyst Joe Micheletti.

Philadelphia: Comcast SportsNet carries 41 game broadcasts featuring Jim Jackson,Steve Coates, Keith Jones and Bill Clement.

Pittsburgh: Root Sports hits the season starting Sunday at 6p with Paul Steigerwald, Bob Errey and Dan Potash returning as the voices of Penguins hockey.

Boston: NESN delivers 41 games this year featuring play-by-play announcer Jack Edwards and color analyst Andy Brickley.

Buffalo: MSG will air 41 games in the Buffalo/Rochester market.

Tampa Bay: The FOX Florida networks are set to deliver 43 games with 37 of those on SUN Sports.

Carolina: FOX Sports Carolinas showcases 45 games with three set to be carried on FOX Sports Carolinas’ sister station, SportSouth. John Forslund handles play-by-play with Tripp Tracy offering analysis.

Washington: Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic received 41 games including 38 games on Comcast SportsNet and three games on Comcast SportsNet Plus. Joe Beninati handles play-by-play with analyst Craig Laughlin and reporter Al Koken.

Florida: FOX Sports Florida will broadcast 42 games, while Sun Sports will serve as the home for six games in April. Play-by-play announcer Steve “Goldie” Goldstein returns, alongside Bill Lindsay as color analyst.

On the Air

ESPN Deportes launched the “first live multi-screen viewing experience geared towards the bilingual Hispanic sports fan” dubbed #Redes. Presented by Bud Light, the new 60-minute series will look to gather content from around the web, and jump into social conversations about sports, entertainment, music and pop culture. #Redes launches on Monday, January 21 airing weekdays at 8 p.m. ET. Carolina Guillen will be joined by co-hosts Alfredo Lomeli and Barak Fever for the series.

San Diego State has decided that it can go home, especially when it never left. The school announced that it will remain a member of the Mountain West Conference and will not join the Big East for football this fall (and Big West for other sports) as planned. The conference’s Board of Directors voted Wednesday afternoon to reinstate San Diego State and the school will remain a member of the Mountain West in all sports. With SDSU and Boise State now remaining, the MWC will have 12 football members this fall.

Could FOX Soccer be transformed into an entertainment network? That’s the report from the Los Angeles Times, which notes that with FOX Sports 1 on the horizon, Fox Soccer could undergo a facelift to become a sister channel to FX that targets millennials.

The YES Network, which celebrated its 10th anniversary year last year, finished the broadcast year as the most-watched regional sports network (RSN) in the country in Total Day delivery, according to Nielsen, for the 10th straight year. The channel saw viewership increases in key demographics, including Total Day delivery in Males 18-49 rising 11%. Primetime delivery grew among Males 18-34 (12%), Males 18-49 (16%), Males 25-54 (7%), Persons 18-34 (8%) and Persons 18-49 (10%). In addition, demo deliveries for Yankees games on YES increased by11% in Men 18-49 while Net’s game grew 167% in the demo.

For the 13th straight year, FOX Sports Radio will offer coverage of the Super Bowl from its official super-stage during the week leading up to the event. Beginning Monday, January 28, FOX Sports Radio will take over New Orleans with hosts Andy Furman, Artrell Hawkins, Steve Hartman, Pat O’Brien, Matt “Money” Smith and Petros Papadakis leading the network’s coverage live from Radio Row at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.  In addition, The Dan Patrick Show will broadcast live from the DIRECTV mobile location in New Orleans from January 28 through February 1. New this year, Jay Mohr Sports will host the first-ever virtual experience from Radio Row at the Super Bowl, transporting his show to New Orleans each day via a 46″ big screen TV, in order to chat with athletes, celebrities and guests in real-time as they come face-to-face with his life-size image atop the official FOX Sports Radio stage.

After the BCS Championship made former Miss Alabama USA Katherine Webb a trending topic, “Inside Edition” has now tapped the pageant veteran to serve as a correspondent for the syndicated show leading up to next month’s Super Bowl in New Orleans, according to reports, starting Jan. 28.

ESPN2’s Big Monday presented by Bud Light is set to hit TV sets on Monday with a showdown between women’s basketball pillars Duke and Connecticut at 7p on ESPN2. The seven-week schedule is designed to showcase the best Division I women’s basketball programs in the nation with 10 games. Pam Ward and Rebecca Lobo will have the call of the Duke at UConn game.

The New York Cosmos have submitted a privately-funded economic development proposal to the State of New York to build a 25,000-seat professional soccer stadium. The proposed development is expected to cost more than $400 million and would create more than 500 construction jobs and over 3,000 full-time permanent jobs.

Once the savior of cycling, Lance Armstrong’s confession would cause the sport to be dumped from the Olympic program, according to Reuters. IOC member Dick Pound said that if Armstrong implicated that the sport’s governing body was covering up a widespread doping scheme, the sport may be dropped in order to “clean up” its act.
