Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 17, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The Walt Disney Company has inked a long-term distribution agreement with AT&T U-verse TV to deliver Disney’s sports, news, and entertainment programming to U-verse TV customers across multiple screens, including TVs, computers, smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, and connected TVs. Per the multi-year deal, AT&T U-verse will offer Disney’s full suite of “Watch” products — WatchESPN, Watch Disney Channel, Watch Disney XD, and Watch Disney Junior, as well as the soon-to-be-launched Watch ABC and Watch ABC Family. These video services will be available through each networks’ own WATCH sites and apps as well as on AT&T U-verse’s TV Everywhere offerings. The deal also covers an upcoming ABC News/Univision joint venture to offer English-dominant and bilingual Hispanics a 24/7 news and lifestyle multiplatform network. In total, Disney says approximately 70 services are covered under this deal. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Martha Raddatz, ABC News’ Chief Glboal Affairs Correspondent, will host a new weekly web show from ABC News and Yahoo News called On the Radar. Premiering tomorrow, January 18, the show is a part of ABC News and Yahoo News’ daily political series, Power Players. As host, Raddatz will cover defense, intelligence, and foreign affairs through the lens of US policy and national security. The first episode features an interview with out-going Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. New episodes will be posted to the Power Players Blog. Other web shows that are part of the Power Players weekly lineup include: George’s Bottom Line, hosted by Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos; Top Line, hosted by ABC News’ Washington Editor Rick Klein and Yahoo News’ Olivier Knox; and Politics Confidential with Jonathan Karl.
Speaking of Yahoo and ABC, the two content partners have announced their coverage plans for President Obama’s second inauguration. Yahoo’s interactive Inauguration Control Room will feature seven hours of live streaming coverage from Yahoo News and ABC News Digital. The coverage kicks off on Sunday, January 20 with a live stream for the President’s official oath of office at 11:55 am ET, followed by continuous coverage on Monday, January 21 from 9:30am to 5pm ET. The live video content will be anchored by Yahoo News’ Olivier Knox and ABC News’ Dan Harris, with on-the-ground reporting coming from Yahoo News’ Jeff Greenfield, Chris Moody, Holly Baily, and Walter Shapiro, as well as from ABC News’ Bianna Golodryga, Dan Kloeffler, Rick Klein, and Reena Ninan. A lineup of notable guests, analysts, and contributors will also join the live stream throughout Monday, including Ben Smith, Editor-in-Chief at BuzzFeed; Walter Schieb, former White House Executive Chef; Eric Draper, Official Photographer for George W. Bush; Michael Waldman, former Speechwriter for President Bill Clinton. Then, on Tuesday, January 22 at 10am ET, Yahoo’s Phoebe Connelly and ABC’s Dan Kloeffler will anchor a post-inaugural special show. The page will also include a continuous live chat, social stream, and live polling, among other interactive features.
Chosen, a new mystery-thriller starring and executive produced by Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes), premieres today on Crackle. The show follows a man who wakes up one morning to discover a box on his doorstep containing a loaded gun and a photo of a stranger. He must kill that man within three days or risk losing his own life as well as his daughter, who is being held hostage. The show spans six episodes, each running roughly 30 minutes with ads.
Amazon’s UK-based Netflix competitor, Lovefilm, has signed a new deal with NBCUniversal International TV Distribution offer shows like The Office (US version) and 30 Rock to its subscribers. The deal also covers archived NBC series like Heroes and the David Hasselhoff-starring classic Knight Rider.

The Cisneros Group of Companies has merged RedMas, the company’s digital media unit, with Adsmovil, a mobile ad network serving Latin America. The newly-formed company will operate under the Adsmovil brand with Co-Founder Alberto Pardo serving as its Chief Executive Officer and Jorge Rincon, RedMas’ CEO, becoming Adsmovil’s new Chief Operating Officer. “The combined companies will be able to offer a broader mobile network and open up the mobile advertising experience across 15 countries in places that receive high traffic and strong relevance for the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking consumer,” said Pardo. “We started the company focusing on the US Hispanic market for online and mobile advertising. Now with this merger we will also focus in the fast-growing Latin American mobile marketing market,” said Rincon. Adsmovil’s network now consists of mobile inventory of a number of publishers in the region as well as mobile apps from companies like Univision, Telemundo, and Azteca America, among others. The company says it will also look to expand its presence in the US (Miami, LA, and NY), Mexico, and a bunch of Latin American countries.
upLynk, a video streaming technology provider, has emerged from stealth mode to launch its HD Adaptive Streaming Platform. The company says it offers a low cost, scalable approach to streaming broadcast-quality content to all devices. It encodes video in the cloud using a single, non-proprietary adaptive format, which enables video playback on all of the major platforms and devices, including iOS, Android, Windows 8, Roku, and PC/Mac/Linux browsers. upLynk also announced that Disney/ABC Television Group is already using its platform to manage video encoding and delivery to Disney’s suite of streaming apps, including Watch Disney Channel, Watch Disney Junior, and Watch Disney XD.
Multichannel marketing company ePrize has acquired Mozes, a Palo Alto-based mobile company that provides social and location-based experiences for consumers at live events such as concerts and sporting events, as well as during TV broadcasts. Mozes has powered mobile engagement campaigns for clients like Coca-Cola, Ford Motor Company, and Live Nation, as well as Rock the Vote during the recent presidential election. “Adding Mozes’ technology to our existing promotion, loyalty, and CRM platforms allows for an even more holistic approach to digital engagement,” said Matt Wise, CEO of ePrize, in a statement. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but ePrize says it will retain Mozes’ offices in Palo Alto and its location in Nashville. This is ePrize’s third acquisition in the last 18 months, and second mobile marketing company in the past 12 months.
As part of comScore‘s monthly Video Metrix reports, the company tracks how the top “YouTube partner channels” are doing. In December 2012, the top five YouTube partner channels in terms of unique viewership were VEVO (50.49 million), Fullscreen (31.08 million), Maker Studios (30.01 million), Warner Music (26.03 million), and Machinima (25.99 million). What’s notable about last month’s data is Fullscreen’s jump to the number two position in the partner channel rankings, a first for the company. When looking at it through the lens of independent YouTube content networks, as in multi-channel networks that offer original, unlicensed online content, Fullscreen was number one last month. It placed ahead of competitors such as Maker, Machinima, Collective, and Alloy.
A new research study from JWT/OgilvyAction and EXPO, a consumer network focused on user-generated product videos, reports that 80% of shoppers are digitally engaged with brands in some way. However, 25% of consumers, which the report defines as “Brand Connected Consumers” (BCCs), are the ones that wield the most impact on public opinion and potential sales, according to the study.BCCs are defined by specific online activities that they perform at least once a week, which includes looking for information in the form of messages, videos, and pictures about brands, as well as posting messages about or directly to brands on blogs, websites, and social networks. “BCCs are using social media outlets as the new customer service center, voicing their thoughts — good or bad — in a very visible and public way,” said Bridget Durica, Manager/Insights & Research, JWT/OgilvyAction. “We see this as another opportunity to extend that experience into the pre- and post-shopping space, to engage at key points throughout the consumer journey.” Here are some additional findings concerning BCCs:
- 40% of BCCs report purchasing more of the brand’s products or services if they’re satisfied with their digital interaction with the brand.
- BCCs will not tolerate a brand that ignores negative comments, with 70% reporting they’ll stop buying from a brand if that happens.
- 56% of respondents reported that their negative comments go unanswered more than half the time.

Fashion brand Diesel has launched a new campaign for its Timeframes watch collection titled “Days to Live,” which seeks to inspire people to live every day to the fullest, because, you know, time is fleeting. The campaign features a series of videos showing how time can be wasted. Accompanied by a ticking rhythmical soundtrack, the goal is to create a sense of urgency for users, who are prompted to complete an online questionnaire that calculates their remaining “days to live.” The campaign has also launched a Diesel Timeframes alarm clock app, which wakes you up every morning telling you the number of days you have left on your life clock, accompanied by an inspirational message (otherwise that would be a pretty gloomy to see every time you wake up). The campaign is also supported by a bunch of other TV, online, and social media content, targeted for audiences in the US, Japan, Italy, France, Germany, the UK, and Korea. Created by Crispin Porter & Bogusky, the campaign was directed by Anthony Dickerson through Pulse Films in conjunction with digital studio Storythings. A Facebook login is required. Check it out; it’s not a waste of time (ba-dum-tsh).
