Cynopsis: Kids!

01/17/08

Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 17, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Warner Bros. has put the brakes on the live-action Justice League movie, which director George Miller had been set to begin shooting soon for a 2009 release.  There are several issues at hand, including the studio wanting a re-write of the current script, which can’t happen until the WGA strike is resolved, as well as awaiting tax incentives related to shooting the movie in Australia.  Additionally, the studio has not exercised further options to hold the cast, most of whom are newcomers, though. Reportedly Warner Bros. does intend to stick with the cast as selected by Miller when the movie does go forward.

PBS Kids Sprout launches Sprout Smart, a multiplatform effort designed to encourage parents to talk with their preschoolers about key everyday issues.  Sponsored by Mott’s for Tots and in partnership with KidsHealth.org, The 2008 Sprout Smart topic is Healthy Living & Nutrition.  Four Sprout Smart Public Service Announcements begin running on SproutSmart.com today, and then rolling out on cable networks throughout the year, and from February 15 on Sprout On Demand.

Fox International’s BabyTV launched on Narrowstep’s IPTV platform as babytvchannel .com. BabyTV launched internationally in 2005 and is available on 100+ platforms in 65 countries and in 12 languages via linear TV, VOD, mobile, broadband, home videos and in-flight services.

Following its November 30, 2007 launch, Family Channel’s commercial-free, multiplex channel, Playhouse Disney, is now available to Canadian subscribers of Cogeco Cable, Mountain Cablevision, and Access Communications.  Additionally, SaskTel is set to launch the service on February 21. These four TV providers, servicing communities in Ontario and Saskatchewan, join previously announced Bell ExpressVu.

Johnny Bravo (65×30), one of Cartoon Network’s first original series, makes its debut on Boomerang with a 3-hour marathon this Monday, January 21, 8-11p.  Johnny Bravo will run nightly at 10p beginning January 22.

The Entertainment Software Association has established a political action committee, which will support video-game industry friendly politicians/candidates through monetary donations, per a New York Times report.  The movie and TV industry have similar PACs to support their interests on Capitol Hill.

Granada International heads to NATPE, January 28-31 in Las Vegas, with a host of programming including those for families and kids:

  • My Boy Jack (1×95) – a family targeted drama, starring Daniel “Harry Potter” Radcliffe, which is based on Rudyard Kipling’s poem and real life search for his 17-yr-old son Jack (Radcliffe), who went missing during WWI.   Written by David Haig, the movie is directed by Brian Kirk (The Tudors, Middletown) and is a co-production of Ecosse Films, WGBH Boston and Ingenious Broadcasting for ITV in association with Octagon Films and Granada.
  • Ballet Shoes (1×95) – a family drama starring Emma Watson (aka Harry Potter’s Hermione) as the oldest of three orphaned girls who discover their unique talents.  Produced by Granada for the BBC, Ballet Shoes is based on Noel Streatfeild’s 1936 book of the same name.
  • Nick Baker’s Weird Creatures (7×47)  hosted by wildlife expert Nick Baker, who travels the world looking for all sorts of bizarre animals. An Icon Films production for the UK’s five, Animal Planet in association with Granada International.
  • Boowa & Kwala (52×5)  a preschool animated music-filled series produced in HD by PMMP/UpToTen.com for Canal J and Radio Canada.  The series revolves around Boowa, a big dog with a good sense of humor and loves to sing, and Kwala, a funny inquisitive yellow koala.
  • Supernormal (52×11) – a family-targeted HD animated comedy from Granada Kids and World Leaders Entertainment in association with Granada International.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Speed Racer Enterprises inks more licensing deals for both the new animated series Speed Racer: The Next Generation (26×30), which bows May 2008 on Nicktoons Network, and the classic Speed Racer (52×30) series.  New products for the two brands begins rolling out now through Q3 2008: IMT Accessories’ Monkey Business (indoor and outdoor furniture) and Street Flyers (bicycles/tricycles, skate boards, scooters, skates, accessories, fishing rods, pool accessories); Saramax Apparel (boys/men/girl sleepwear, underwear, loungewear, and infant sleepwear, apparel, bottles and frames); Star Ride Kids (boys apparel, sportswear, swimwear, outerwear); Hanes (underwear, socks, casual-wear); Rubie’s Costume Co (costumes, masks, accessories); DecoPac (cake decorating kits).

Vringo, a distributor of video ringtones, completes a deal with Turner Broadcasting System Europe, under which its subscribers will be able to download 2 to 10-second animated clips from Cartoon Network and Adult Swim to be used as video ringtones.  Vringo has similar agreements with Discovery Channel and Universal Music Group.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Correction: Turner Entertainment’s, President/Turner Broadcasting Sales, is David Levy, and not David Levi (who is my cousin and not in the industry at all).

Decode Entertainment upps Janice Walker to VP/Animation Production, from her role as Producer.  Reporting to Beth Stevenson, EVP/Production and Development, Walker will oversee production on all animated for the company.  Walker was previously Production and Studio Manager for Berlin Film Company and Hahn Film, and as Studio Producer/Manager at Canuck Creations.

Razor & Tie Entertainment names Heather Weisberg a Licensing Manager and Kerri Brusca as Director/Media & Artist Relations.  Most recently Executive Producer, RMI Music & Lucid Music, Weisberg will report to SVP/Marketing, Michael Krumper and Music Publishing, JW Johnson.  Brusca, former founder and principal of KB Entertainment, reports to Krumper and VP/ Media & Artist Relations, Carise Yatter.
