01/12/12
Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 12, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
Hollywood’s UltraViolet has gotten another boost, this time from Amazon and Rovi. Speaking on a panel at the CES about the digital download service, Bill Carr, executive vice president of digital media at Amazon, said the online retailer has signed a deal with an undisclosed Hollywood studio to sell the UltraViolet rights of purchased movies via an online, cloud-based “digital locker,” which can be accessed from multiple devices. Furthermore, the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem, the group behind UltraViolet, announced at the panel that the service will seek mass adoption in 2012 by expanding the selection of available titles and launching an industry standard for transferring content from one screen to the next. And finally, Rovi and Samsung announced Disc to Digital, a new feature on Samsung’s upcoming Blu-ray players, which will allow consumers to insert discs they already own, and for a small price, authenticate that title and add it to their UltraViolet “digital locker.” Powered by its Digital Copy Solution, Rovi will also offer a similar service on computers equipped with Blu-ray drives.
Following in the footsteps of Netflix, Roku has launched in the U.K. and Ireland with the Roku LT and Roku 2 XS streaming devices now available for pre-order via Amazon.co.uk. At launch, Roku will offer more than 40 channels of content, including on-demand services such as Netflix and Sony’s Crackle (only for U.K. customers at this moment); sports programming from MLB.TV and Ultimate Fighting Championship; music from Classical TV; news and entertainment from FoxNews.com and WSJ Live from The Wall Street Journal; games such as Angry Birds; and more. The company plans to announce additional content partners by the time products ship to customers across the pond.
RLTV, a cable network aimed for consumers aged 50 and up, will now offer new content every month via video on demand. Programming will cover an array of relevant topics for RLTV’s demographic, including community-building, health and wellness, along with suitable consumer advice and entertainment. Content on the VOD service will be refreshed every month and will available through the Comcast Media Center and Verizon FiOS.
Bicultural cable network mun2 has produced a digital short-form documentary exploring the topic of mixed African and Latino heritage in the United States by way of interviews with influential people of both African and Latino descent. Titled, Black and Latino, the short documentary features interviews with actress Judy Reyes, MSNBC journalist Soledad O’Brien, actress Gina Torres and more. It debuted on mun2’s website yesterday.
Social entertainment network GetGlue has closed a $12 million round of funding led by new investor Rho Ventures, with contributions from existing investors including RRE Ventures, TimeWarner Investments and Union Square Ventures. The social TV service allows users to check-in to the movies and TV shows that they are watching. The financing follows a strong year for the company as it recently surpassed the 2 million user mark and achieved more than 100 million check-ins in 2011. Looking forward, GetGlue plans to build out a strong second-screen experience for users available for phones, tablets and the web. It will also look to expand its platform to enable check-ins from third-party applications.
About a third of the Super Bowl ads this coming year will feature Shazam, says Evan Krauss, EVP of advertising at Shazam, to Adweek. This translates to at least 17 clients for the mobile app’s interactive TV advertising service. Powered by the Shazam for TV platform, which allows users to tag a commercial by recording its audio, advertisers can deliver additional content and promotions directly to the mobile device. In the past, this has included giving away free songs, recipes and coupons. Client names are revealed after the embargo is lifted on February 2, reports Adweek.
In rolling out the new ad unit this week, Facebook has decided to brand the paid ads that that will begin to appear in a user’s news feed as “Featured Stories.” The ad units, which highlight your friend’s interaction with a brand on the social network, will still only appear at most once a day in a user’s feed. “We are using the term, ‘featured’ because we want to make it clear to people that they’re seeing the content from a page or person they have chosen to connect to,” said a spokeswoman from Facebook in an email.
Groupon and Deutsche Telekom have struck up a partnership in Europe. Per the terms of the deal, Groupon will offer its daily deals services directly to Deutsche Telekom’s European mobile customers, without requiring a separate download. As of the end of September, Deutsche Telekom claimed to have 128 million mobile customers, 35 million fixed-network lines and an additional 17 million broadband lines within its European network. The new offering is scheduled to be available in the first half of 2012.
Provision Interactive Technologies will integrate Intel AIM Suite‘s audience impression analytics into Provision’s 3D holographic kiosk displays. Each Provision 3D kiosk possesses a 3D display at the top and a 2D screen below it, which combine to provide consumers access to information, coupons, product samples and other promotions from participating brands and advertisers. The Intel AIM technology will enable Provision to anonymously monitor viewer information on demographics and other metrics such as time spent at the display. In addition to the integration, a new partnership with Premier Retail Networks will provide Provision’s kiosks with programming and custom content to engage consumers, as well as an ad sales service to help Provision manage relationships with brand advertisers.
Multichannel direct marketer and play-and-win content provider Publishers Clearing House has acquired Liquid Wireless, a Portland-based company that specializes in mobile lead generation, media buying and analytics. Liquid Wireless’ platform manages and tracks mobile campaigns from lead generation and click-through to post-conversion sale. As PCH seeks to build out its presence on mobile devices, it will tap Liquid Wireless’ customer acquisition engine in order to provide access to a wider mobile audience for its existing and future advertising clients. The Liquid Wireless team will remain in Portland and will become an extension of PCH’s digital advertising sales organization.
According to a new research study from TiVo, live-TV viewing has dropped to 38% across all TiVo users. The percentage is even lower (at 27%) among TiVo viewers who use over-the-top services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus and YouTube, through their TiVo device. This data comes from the DVR-maker’s audience research unit, which tracks anonymous usage across nearly 2 million TiVo devices on what it describes as a “second-by-second” basis.
The latest data from comScore’s Media Metrix reveals that CNBC.com was visited by 5.7 million unique visitors in December of 2011 and accumulated 304 million page views; the latter is an 11% increase year-over-year and a new December record for the website. The good news extended to CNBC’s mobile platforms. CNBC Mobile, which includes CNBC Mobile Web, as well as apps for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices, cumulatively served 1.8 billion page views in 2011, according to numbers from Omniture. The most staggering performance growth numbers were achieved by CNBC’s Real-Time iPhone app, which witnessed a 72% year-over-year increase in page views.
The November SMART Report from Millennial Media finds that mobile commerce grew 64% month-over-month as a post-click action. In addition, mobile campaigns that used a store locator increased 47% month-over-month, and accounted for 33% of all mobile campaigns on Millennial’s platform. Furthermore, 60% of all campaigns on Millennial’s network were focused on driving customers to a mobile site, instead of a custom landing page or an app download page; and is also a 7% increase month-over-month. Shining a spotlight on the telco industry, the November SMART Report also found that promoting a new product launch (tablets, smartphones, etc.) was the top goal for 68% of all campaigns among telecom advertisers.
In a bit of interesting news (or sound bite) coming from Eric Schmidt, the Google CEO tells CNET during an interview at the 2012 that, eventually, almost every device in your household (this includes not just tablets and televisions, but maybe even your fridge) could be synced together on a large home-wide network. And, of course, it could be powered by Android. CNET also spoke with other panelists from companies and firms such as Samsung, Sling Media and Benchmark. They echoed Schmidt’s sentiments on the future of Android, but also noted that Android’s fragmentation could serve as a possible hurdle.
In other Google-related news, Google+ launched a new social game yesterday called Pirates: Tides of Fortune, the third game to be offered exclusively on the social network. Similar to deals Google+ has struck with other game developers, the game will be available on the social network exclusively for 30 days. In exchange, Google will not only promote the title but only take 5% of the revenues, opposed to the 30% Facebook takes, according to AllThingsD.
Chris Kiriakatis has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Digital, Advertiser Sales for Sony Pictures Television. In his new role, Kiriakatis will oversee all U.S. ad sales for the company’s properties, which includes Crackle.com and the PlayStation Network. He will also manage the digital teams in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles; and will report to Amy Carney, president of advertiser sales at Sony Pictures Television.
Social media advertising platform MediaBrix has made a couple of additions to its executive team; Manny Berrios is the new Chief Technology Officer and Sandro Camarao is the new Vice President of Product Management. MediaBrix will tap both men’s technical expertise in order to “accelerate the development of (MediaBrix’s) social products,” says COO Jay Drago. Both are newly created positions based in MediaBrix’s New York headquarters.

I unabashedly love Spotify. This is not news. However, every once in a while I discover something new about the music service and immediately go nuts about it. This has happened more often ever since the company opened up its platform to include third-party apps. The latest favorite from yours truly is SpotON Radio, available for free on the iOS. The app lets you create personalized radio stations based on the artists in your library. To that end, you can make the stations adapt to your tastes by liking or disliking songs; add new tracks or export the entire playlist from the station into your Spotify library; and skip as many songs as you like.
