CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

01/12/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 12, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Cox Communications, Inc., has unveiled its plan to launch a family programming package.  Cox plans to rollout its Family Package to in four markets, San Diego, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Northern Virginia before the end of 1Q 2006.  The package will include about 40 networks and local affiliates, including CSPAN, Superstation WGN, TV Guide Channel, Disney Channel, Discovery Kids, Headline News, National Geographic Channel, HGTV, DIY Network, Nickelodeon, Fit TV, Sprout, Discovery Science, Boomerang and GSN.  Local systems will be able to hone the package according to the needs of its subscribers, to include The Weather Channel or Weatherscan Local, CSPAN 2 or 3, and additional religious and Spanish-language channels. The average cost of the Family Package will be about $32 per month.

G4, the video game lifestyle network, and Hasbro, Inc., have joined forces to create programming for the network based on Hasbro brands.  The first joint effort under the partnership is a 1hr live-action & animation block called Action Blast!, which will air daily at 8p beginning this month.  Produced by Hasbro in association with Tango Pix, the Action Blast will feature series based on Hasbro’s classic and newer action brands such as Transformers, G.I. Joe, Beastwars and B-Daman.  The block also includes interstitials featuring Kaiju Big Battel, characters best known for their tongue-in-cheek tournament-style act that mixes American pro-wrestling, Japanese monster-movies and pop-culture.  A weekend version of the block will feature the best-of-the-week collection with shortened versions of the previous week’s episodes.  Under the partnership, G4 and Hasbro are jointly developing entertainment for G4’s late night block, which airs weeknights at 12a.  Additionally, as partners the companies are also looking to expand into other content formats such as VOD, broadband and wireless platforms.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Image in Media Inc. has signed a $20m co-production agreement with China Film Animation Ltd. and Treehouse Film and Television Ltd, to produce a 3D animated feature film called Monster Club The Movie (90 min).  Production is slated to take place entirely this year.  Monster Club The Movie is based upon the UK comic created by Kit Wallis and published AP Comics Ltd.  In October 2005, Image in Media announced it was being acquired by Section Rouge Media Inc., the deal is expected to be completed in the first part of this year.

Nickelodeon will air, Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: God, Science, Politics and Your School, Sunday, January 22, 8:30p.  The show will explore the ongoing controversy in the US concerning the teaching of the theory of intelligent design side-by-side with the theory of evolution in public school science classes.  The show aims to inform kids about what these theories are all about, and not a debate.

Correction:  The premiere date for Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana and Cow Belles is Friday, March 24, and not as listed here yesterday.
