Good Morning. It’s Thursday, January 10, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing. Warner Bros. Television Group announced it will combine its two domestic television distribution units, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution and Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution. The lone expanded unit, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution will continue to have Ken Werner as President; however, Eric Frankel, President of Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution since 2001, and the guy who led the charge on cable syndication of West Wing, ER and Friends among others, will leave the company. Tonight’s Premieres: ~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~
TV One debuts a new original series, The Funny Spot January 19 at 10p. The weekly showcase for comedians will be hosted by Tony Rock who also stars in the sitcom All of Us. The series will include behind-the-scenes of comedy segments as well as a regular segment “On the Spot” where the performers are asked questions from Tony and the audience. The Funny Spot will be filmed at the Comedy Union in Los Angeles and is produced by Ruby Red Media, Inc. Next month, Food Network introduces a new six-week competition series – Ultimate Recipe Showdown launches February 17 at 9p. Hosted by Marc Summers and Guy Fieri, the show features everyday cooks competing with their best recipes against one another in a Kitchen Stadium-style arena. The entries were narrowed down to 54 selections divided into six categories with nine finalists each week participating in front of judges. The final winner will receive $25,000 and the chance to have their dish featured at T.G.I. Friday restaurants nationally. A&E Network’s premiere of Intervention last Monday (9p) drew in 1.8 million A18-49 viewers and 1.7 million A25-54 viewers. The Golf Channel suspended its first female anchor Kelly Tilghman on Wednesday for a period of two weeks after her comment that any young players looking to challenge Tiger Woods ought to “lynch him in a back alley.” The comment came up during an on-air discussion with Nick Faldo about up and coming new players and if any were able to challenge Woods. Woods’ manager said he and Tiger believed it was an inadvertent comment and no ill will was intended; however, Rev. Al Sharpton is calling for Tilghman to be fired. Tilghman will be back in time for the Buick Invitational on January 24, which also marks Woods’ first tournament in 2008. The statement by the Golf Channel: “While we believe that Kelly’s choice of words was inadvertent and that she did not intend them in an offensive manner, the words were hurtful and grossly inappropriate. Consequently, we have decided to suspend Kelly for two weeks, effective immediately.” Woods and Tilghman, long time friends, have reportedly talked, and she has apologized to him directly. The People’s Choice Awards in a typical year will reach on the low side about 9-10 million viewers, and on the high side upwards of 20 million viewers. This year’s event on CBS presented in a “magazine-style” format, delivered an all-time low: just 5.99 million viewers. Without the red carpet, the thrill of who looks ghastly and who looks great, who behaved inappropriately, not to mention who won and lost, the excitement of the awards fest apparently was lacking. The presentation’s first half hour delivered a slight 7.86 million viewers (ranking 3rd after NBC and Fox), and by the last half hour was down to 4.44 million. ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
Barry Katz and New Wave Entertainment are teaming to produce a ten-episode stand-up comedy series with a sports twist for NESN. NESN’s Comedy All-Stars will open this summer and each week the show will feature three stand-up comedians from the Boston area and around the nation with routines centered on sports topics. Taping of the show is happening this month at Boston’s Comedy Connection in Faneuil Hall, where you can still get seats in the studio to watch on January 14, 15 or 16 at 730p. If you would like to be in the audience send an email to TV Guide Network signed a deal with TV personality Chris Harrison to co-host its new daily entertainment newsmagazine show, Hollywood 411. Premiering January 14 at 9p, Madison Michele is the other co-host along with field correspondents from the show’s New York bureau. The show will be produced at TV Guide Network’s Hollywood & Highland production center. Spike TV has ordered up six episodes of DEA, an unscripted series featuring the inner workings at the Drug Enforcement Administration, from Al Roker Entertainment, reports THR. Cameras follow a group of special agents from the Detroit division, illustrating what it’s like for agents to go undercover posing as drug dealers, as well as conducting raids and arrests. The show is scheduled to premiere in 2nd qtr 2008. Casting Call: A production company is looking for a Host to lead an animal show. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY reporting this week from CES in Las Vegas: Talk around the show yesterday centered on the massive layoffs being announced around the linear media world. Time Warner’s Warner Bros. film and TV studio indicated it may have to lay off as many as 1,000 workers because of the writers strike, beginning as soon as January 18. McGraw-Hill said it will begin to reduce costs by eliminating 611 positions. The Chicago-Sun Times and The Seattle Times are both paring their ranks. Even Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia is proceeding with more layoffs, following a series of job cuts in December. Click for the full CYN DIGITAL edition. CYN OPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Hasbro Games, a unit of Hasbro, Inc., will cut some 200 manufacturing and support jobs at its East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, plant and invest $40 million, $10 million immediately, in the facility as the company unveils plans to “improve the productivity and competitiveness” of the plant. The plan hedges on union negotiations to alter certain work practice changes that Hasbro says will make the facility more competitive. Hasbro intends to offer severance packages to office employees, and negotiate benefits with affected union employees. The majority of Hasbro’s board game manufacturing will still be based in Massachusetts and at the Company’s plant in Waterford, Ireland. Click for the full CYN KIDS edition. CYN OPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: French president Nicolas Sarkozy is looking to make another media move. The president announced he was interested in shuttering the country’s English-, Arabic-, and French-language France 24 news service launched in December 2006. Instead, he would like to create the new France Monde channel in French to launch this year. “With taxpayers’ money, I am not prepared to broadcast a channel that does not speak French.” The reported plan is to merge Radio France Internationale, TV5 television, and France 24 existing resources. Although French will be the network’s spoken language, live English, Spanish, and Arabic subtitling may be used on the new channel. This public statement is in addition to his recent announcement this week regarding a possible elimination of advertising from public TV. Click for the full CYN INTERNATIONAL edition. ~ RATINGS ~
