Cynopsis
02/09/06
Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 9, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
The rumors are ringing true. Univision Communications Inc. has now officially announced will test the “for sale” waters. Of course, they didn’t put it that way. Their official announcement said it will “begin a process to explore strategic alternatives to enhance shareholder value.” The network’s Board of Directors will reportedly look into raising capital through alternatives such as securities or assets sales, a recapitalization, strategic acquisitions and possibly a sale or merger between Univision and another corporation. The company is valued at close to $10 billion. UBS Investment Bank will act as Univision’s financial advisor in this process.
*MORE GOOD STUFF*You gotta figure ABC Sports knows what it’s losing here, but then again if they really did perhaps they’d find a way not to lose him. Al Michaels will not be in the football booth next season when Monday Night Football moves to ESPN. Nor will he be calling the shots for ABC Sports basketball coverage. And that’s a rotten shame. Why is he leaving? According to ESPN John Skipper, because Michaels “wasn’t comfortable, and let us know he wasn’t comfortable, with the direction of the show. We want to work with those who want to work with us, so we quickly made the decision to move on.” Calling the games for ESPN’s Monday Night Football it will be Mike Tirico, Joe Theismann and Tony Kornheiser. Joining the three on the sidelines will be Suzy Kolber and Michele Tafoya. As for ABC’s basketball coverage, look for Mike Breen and Hubie Brown starting next week. What will be next for Michaels? Perhaps Dick Ebersol will get what he’s been after for a long time.
TNT will provide DirecTV a high-def feed starting February 17. The new feed will be available to DirecTV customers 24/7 on channel 75. Coverage would include NBA games, NASCAR races, TNT originals, series and movies. It will included as part of DirecTV’s HD subscription package.
The premiere of Discovery Channel’s Grizzly Man documentary on February 3rd at 8p drew in 5.3 million total viewers, and upped the previous six week demo average by 125% among A25-54, 120% in M25-54 and 133% in W25-54. The doc was then repeated in late night and again twice on Saturday evening (in prime and again in late night) and the cumulative total viewers for all airings was 13.7 million viewers.
Program note: CBS will launch The Unit on Tuesday, March 7 at 9p. That same evening The Amazing Race (which will have premiered the week prior), will move to its new time period at 10p. The Unit is a drama about a covert team of special forces operatives risking their lives on undercover missions around the globe while their wives maintain the homefront, protecting their husbands’ secrets. One sidebar – the time period for The Unit is also the current time period of Love Monkey, and no word yet on the fate of that series.
* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *ABC‘s pilot project Secrets from a Small Town from Touchstone TV has named Angie Harmon to star in this mystery series.
Over at Fox, their pilot project Becoming Glen has cast The Daily Show correspondent Rob Corddy as Glen, a 40-something guy who spends all of this series looking back to the previous decade when he was a loser living with his parents. Becoming Glen is from 20th Century Fox TV.
ABC has also ordered up two pilots –
- Southern Comfort (I know, same name as a drama pilot project for Fox, but different storyline) about a geeky guy who also happens to be a billionaire, who moves back to his hometown and all the same old stuff comes back up, like fighting with his jock brother. This project is from 20th Century Fox TV.
- Mr. Nice Guy, from Touchstone TV and Brillstein-Grey, is about a guy who keeps trying to do the right thing, but always comes off as doing the wrong thing.
And two new pilots ordered by NBC, both from 20th Century Fox TV:
- The Singles Table begins at a wedding where five people who have never met before are all seated at the so-called Singles Table, and from there their relationships begins.
- And an untitled comedy about two brothers, who live next door to each other with their respective family, and who also happen to be on the opposite sides of the legal system – one is an FBI agent, the other a career criminal.
* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Nicole Zussman has joined the YES Network as VP/Human Resources. She will report to Ray Hopkins, COO/YES and will oversee all aspects of the company’s human resources activity. Most recently, Nicole was at World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in Stamford, Conn., where she had been VP/Human Resources.
TV Guide Publishing Group has announced two key promotions: Mindy Nathanson has been upped to VP and Associate Publisher/Marketing where she will assume greater responsibilities in the advertising sales process and will collaborate directly with clients to develop customized creative marketing programs for their brands. Also, Gary Kleinman has been promoted to VP/National Advertising Director, overseeing the advertising revenue for TV Guide Magazine and all regional sales offices. Marc Horine has been named GM/New Media for ESPN Radio and ESPN Deportes Radio. In his new role, Marc will be responsible for the overall businesses of both ESPNRadio.com and ESPNDeportesRadio.com, including all editorial and design decisions, as well as sales.
A couple of major shifts at Nickelodeon outlined, including confirming the departure of Jeff Dunn, COO/Nickelodeon Networks Group and President/Nickelodeon Films and Enterprises. With that announcement all came three elevations at the company:
- Tom Ascheim to EVP/GM, Nickelodeon Television, expanding his current role to include oversight of the day-to-day operations for all of Nickelodeon’s TV businesses, which includes Nickelodeon, Noggin, The N and Nicktoons Television. The 16-year Nickelodeon veteran and all around great guy will be responsible for all programming, production and marketing for these channels. In addition, Ascheim will head a production and creative group that will produce and program content across multiple platforms.
- Steve Youngwood has been upped to EVP/Nickelodeon Digital Media. Youngwood will manage expansion across digital platforms and all online efforts, as well as the group’s wireless, gaming, interactive television and digital video initiatives.
- Sarah Kirshbaum Levy has been promoted to EVP/Strategy and Business Operations, Nickelodeon. In addition to her current responsibilities she will oversee Nickelodeon Recreation and Magazine divisions. Nicely done, Ms. Levy, nicely done!
Sarah Trahern has been named SVP/Programming for Great American Country. In her new role, Sarah will oversee program development and acquisition, strategic planning and production in addition to overall programming strategy.
Both Andrew M. Nigolian and Christine Carrier have been upped to SVP/Affiliate Sales & Marketing, Starz Entertainment Group, with both reporting to Edward Huguez, EVP/Affiliate Sales & Marketing. Andrew manages the Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, Bright House, Adelphia and Bresnan accounts, and is based in Philadelphia. Christine oversees Cox, Charter, NCTC, Mediacom, Insight, and CableOne accounts and works out of Atlanta office.
Starz Entertainment Group has promoted Andrew M. Nigolian and Christine Carrier to SVP/Affiliate Sales & Marketing. Andrew is based in the Philadelphia office, and Christine is based in Atlanta. Both will report to Edward L. Huguez, EVP/Affiliate Sales & Marketing.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: Kiefer Sutherland stars in the Fox drama 24. Earlier in his career, while filing a movie he was required to drive a Humvee through two rows of marching soldiers. He had trouble driving the extra wide vehicle and actually hit soldiers on multiple takes. What film was this?
