Good Morning.  It’s Thursday, February 7, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Latest update on the Writers’ Strike is a proposed deal could be drafted by week’s end, which means when the East and West guilds meet with their memberships on Saturday, there could be something definitive to discuss.  An official statement is not expected from the WGA until after the meetings on Saturday. The strike began back on November 5th and if WGA and AMPTP are able to come to terms now, it could save what is left of the network pilot season. And the next big television event – the Academy Awards, scheduled for February 24th – just may be able to air without a picket line.  The remaining question to be answered is which of the shows shut down as a result of the strike, will resume production once the strike is over.

Tonight’s Premieres:
CBS: Survivor: Micronesia at 8p
NBC: Lipstick Jungle at 10p

DIRECTV introduces its newest series Supreme Court of Comedy March 3 at 10p in HD on the original entertainment channel, The 101. Dom Irrera will be the resident “chief justice” and other comedians such as Jamie Kennedy, Sinbad, Paul Rodriguez and Tom Arnold will represent plaintiffs and defendants in each case. The 10-episode series is set at the World Famous Laugh Factory in Hollywood.

National Geographic Channel (NGC) debuts the series, Who Knew? With Marshall Brain on March 13 at 8p that explores how people and machines manufacture things such as airbags, fireworks and bikes made of material as thin as a dollar bill. Marshall Brain, teacher, columnist and author of How Stuff Works, will be the host of this weekly series produced by Atlas Media Corp.

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes revealed plans to spin off the declining AOL internet access unit from the portal’s ad business, make all of its networks available on demand and possibly shed some shares of Time Warner Cable down the road. Defending the strategy to analysts, he described broadband and cable on demand programming as complementary rather than cannibalistic to traditional advertising and viewership.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.
