Today’s Top Headlines

Parental guidance gets more help: The TV and film industries are launching a broad campaign to educate parents so they can better manage their kids’ media. A response to the widespread call for a more proactive stance to help stem violent behavior, the MPAA, NAB, NCTA, National Assn. of Theater Owners and American Cable Assn. will disseminate information about the ratings system and parental blocking technologies through public service announcements, social media, informational web sites, in-theater messaging and other media. The newly redesigned web site TheTVBoss.org will serve as the nexus for information on ratings, technology and media literacy.

Just one day after Radio Disney Music Awards tickets went on sale, it was announced that Selena Gomez will be headlining the event, which will be held April 27 from Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre L.A. Live. Gomez will be joined by other kid-friendly performing talent including Bridgit Mendler, Cody Simpson, Austin Mahone and Coco Jones. Recognizing the multiplatform media tastes of its audience, Radio Disney will present the awards in segments, across multiple platforms: on Vevo and on Disney Channel, Radio Disney, RadioDisney.com and Disney.com. Fans are invited to vote on categories including Ultimate Breakout Star – Biggest Viral Artist and Best Crush Song. Additionally, in collaboration with Disney Friends For Change, kids ages 5-18 across Radio Disney’s 31 markets can enter to win a $500 grant to benefit their community project and a chance to be honored onstage at the awards.

Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman took the stage at Nickelodeon’s Upfront on Tuesday, praising the network as “one of the most important brands in the Viacom family.” He said Nickelodeon is reinventing itself once again and is hitting a “generational reset button” to do so. Dauman talked up the strong ties between Nick and Viacom-owned Paramount Pictures’ animation label, noting the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 2 is due next year, as is a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, slated for spring 2014.

Hallmark Channel is kicking off its new “Walmart and P&G present Walden Family Theater” franchise on March 15 with a sequel to the theatrical release Nim’s Island that returns wildlife enthusiast Bindi Irwin to the role of Nim. The new family programming brand was created for Hallmark by Walmart, P&G, Walden Media and indie studio ARC Entertainment.
