Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 28, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Amazon has inked a licensing deal with Sony Pictures Television to make the FX western Justified available exclusively on Prime Instant Video. The Timothy Olyphant-starring drama has already been available for purchase/rental via Amazon Instant Video. In addition, the deal also adds LA-based crime drama The Shield to the Prime Instant Video catalog.
TNT is making the first six episodes of the second season of Dallas available online and via its mobile app. The seventh episode of the season will join its brethren on March 6, the day before it airs. All seven episodes will remain online through March 12, the day after the network airs J.R. Ewing’s funeral episode. This way, TNT says, viewers can catch up on the season before this historic episode airs.
ABC News Digital and Yahoo News will provide live streaming coverage of the farewell to Pope Benedict XVI today. Anchored by George Stephanopoulos, coverage begins with an ABC News Special Report live from the Vatican beginning at 5:00am ET, followed by live coverage of the Pope’s departure from the Vatican at approximately 10:45am ET. The live streams will be available throughout the day across ABCNews.com, Yahoo news, GoodMorningAmerica.com, ABC News’ iOS apps, ABC affiliate sites, and the ABC News YouTube channel.
Fox Broadcasting is launching a new content syndication network that will distribute second-screen content currently available through its Fox Now apps, across other second-screen/social TV TV app providers. Launch partners include Shazam, Viggle, ConnecTV, and NextGuide. This will allow these users to access extra content synced to Fox’s TV programming, including behind-the-scenes clips and social experiences. Fox says the syndication network is also designed to allow it to create, manage, and distribute content across smart TVs, connected TV devices, and other TV service providers. Additional partners and providers are to be announced soon.
During its Upfront this week, Nickelodeon announced a partnership with Brian Robbins (Smallville, One Tree Hill) to co-develop a new half-hour sketch comedy show that features a mix of new and existing content from Robbins’ YouTube original channel, Awesomeness TV. The kids network also announced the renewal of its Animated Shorts Program, which allows creators to pitch ideas for future Nick series. Twelve pitches were selected from the inaugural program, all of which will either air on the network or appear on Nick.com and the network’s newly launched iPad app.
CBS might consider creating original programming for SVOD services like Netflix and Amazon, according to Armando Nunez, President of CBS Studios International. Per Home Media Magazine, Nunez, who was speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom conference in SF this week, said, “We view Netflix, Amazon, all the SVOD platforms as new players. Google is extending its TrueView ad product to games and apps, according to a presentation Susan Wojcicki, Google’s SVP/Advertising, gave at IAB’s Annual Leadership Meeting. Per Adweek, Wojcicki said the TrueView ads, which give users the option to skip the ad after five seconds, have led to a 40% decrease in the number of viewers who have clicked away from the video in order to avoid the pre-roll.
AOL is bolstering its Advertising.com platform by allowing customers to buy inventory available through the Facebook Exchange (FBX). “We know that advertisers want to include Facebook in their buys — we’re seeing it on RFPs — so we’re glad to be able to further meet their needs,” said Ned Brody, CEO of the newly branded AOL Networks, in a blog post. FBX is designed to allow advertisers to buy ad space on the social network using the same targeting methods they use for web pages.
Spafax Networks will be integrating PlaceIQ’s audience intelligence platform into its SN: Xchange, a real-time ad serving and reporting platform for digital place-based media networks. Spafax says that this deal, combined with earlier agreements with Nielsen (for its On Location research) and Vistar Media (for its ad serving platform) will allow the SN: Xchange to offer marketers a single solution to reach consumers on the go. PlaceIQ’s audience platform ingests location-based data to determine insights on audience, context, and intent, all broken down by time of day.
Earlier this week, IAB announced the winners of its 2012 Sales Excellence Awards. Chosen through a two-part survey of approximately 400 agency and marketing executives who have spent at least $1 million in online advertising over the past year, the winners are:

White-label video publishing company thePlatform will provide back-end video management for Astral Television Networks’ newly launched The Movie Network (TMN) Go, HBO Go Canada, and TMN Encore Go streaming services in Eastern Canada. TMN Go will use thePlatform’s cloud-base, mpx video management system to collect, protect, and publish video across devices. The system will also handle user subscription authentication process central to most TV Everywhere offerings. The Movie Network is a pay-TV service that offers access to Hollywood movies, HBO content, Showtime series, and Canadian programming. thePlatform is an independent subsidiary of Comcast based in Seattle.
30% of interactive in-stream mobile video campaigns run by mobile video ad company Rhythm NewMedia in Q4 included social media buttons, generating a 36% average lift in engagement.In fact, Rhythm says social media activation in mobile campaign creative is on the rise, with advertiser use increasing 430% year-over-year across its network. Rhythm works with publishers and brands to deliver in-stream video and rich media ads across top mobile devices, including those powered by iOS and Android. Other key findings include:
- Premium video viewing on tablets peaks slightly on the weekends, with roughly 17% of overall weekly video views occurring on Saturdays.
- During weekdays, video viewing on tablets increases during primetime hours; during the weekends, it’s more spread out with the mornings and evenings seeing the most activity.
- Premium video viewing on smartphones peaks slightly in the evenings during weekdays, and in the morning during the weekend.

Well, the awards season is finally over. Or is it? (Yeah, it is.) But here’s something fun from Netflix if you still need some sort of awards fix. The company has launched The Flixies, an awards program that allows members and non-members from all Netflix territories to vote on categories determined by what people are watching on the streaming service. For example, awards categories include: Best Tantrum Tamer, Best Hangover Cure, Best Guilty Pleasure, Best TV Marathon, and, of course, Best Bromance. Voting ends Sunday, March 10. The winners will be revealed on March 11.
