Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 23, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Spunky, 14-year-old singer and X-Factor alumnus, Rachel Crow, inks a development deal with Nickelodeon and, has been signed to a recording deal by Columbia Records/Syco. Syco is a joint venture between Simon Cowell‘s, The X Factor creator, judge, and Crow’s mentor on the show, and Sony Music. You may recall young Rachel’s crying on X Factor  well, as many have predicted she’s doing great. For her new deal with Nickelodeon, the network is developing a comedy pilot for Crow.  Additionally, Crow will take on a recurring role in Nickelodeon’s new series Fred: The Show, which stars Lucas Cruikshank and airs on Friday nights. In Fred, Crow will play Starr, an imaginative, confident, yet awkward teen. Starr’s perception of herself doesn’t quite match with how others see her… her classmates think she is somewhat eccentric, but she sees herself as a wildly talented actress/singer that is ready to get outta Dodge.

LICENSING

Australian-based mobile developer, Halfbrick, has finalized a range of sweetly sliced licensing deals in multiple categories for its Fruit Ninja game app. New Fruit Ninja partners include, in the toy arena include Basic Fun (handheld electronic devices, key chains), Jazwares (plush, figures, electronics), Mattel (card, board games), and Nanco-Nancy Sales (amusement plush and novelty toys). For the apparel category, signing on as licensee are Bioworld Merchandising (headwear, bags, accessories), Hybrid (apparel), and MjC (sleepwear, loungewear, underwear). Meanwhile, Fruit Ninja deals for other categories and products include Coveroo (phone cases), Calendar Holdings (2013 calendars), Healthy Food Brands (fruit snacks and gummies), SmileMakers (stickers), and Trends International (posters). The Fruit Ninja franchise recently released three new versions on different platforms, Fruit Ninja Kinect on Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA), Fruit Ninja: Puss in Boots for all iOS devices and Fruit Ninja Frenzy on Facebook.

Jakks Pacific‘s infant/preschool toy division, Tollytots, inks a worldwide master toy license to manufacture, market and distribute a line of early learning toys based on the Little Angels property, created by actress/executive producer Roma Downey (Touched by an Angel) and writer Phil Lollar (Adventures in Odyssey). Little Angels is a faith-based animated preschool DVD series from Fox Home Entertainment. In addition to educating preschoolers about the ABCs and numbers, the Little Angels DVD series, and books, CDs and apps, is designed to introduce them to the Bible. Set to launch in fall 2013, Tollytots’ line of Little Angels toys will feature products in categories including dolls and accessories, plush, preschool, role play, electronic learning toys, games and puzzles, educational and musical toys, building and construction toys, kids furniture, ride-ons, etc.

Discovery Bay Games, creator of games, apps, and tablet and iOS game accessories, teams with HIT Entertainment to create Thomas & Friends apps for the Duo line of iPad game accessories. Slated for introduction in fall 2012, the new Thomas & Friends-branded Duo “appcessory” will provide a new form of app-supported active play for the iPad.

MARKETING

Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products taps Toys”R”Us to serve as the North American retail destination for products based on the upcoming animated feature film Ice Age 4: Continental Drift, releasing July 13, 2012. Just a head of the movie, Toys”R”Us will introduce Ice Age 4 products and promotions beginning July 1, including a toy line from Just Play (plush, novelty toys, 2.5-inch poseable figures, a Shivering Scrat vibrating plush with sound effects) and The Promotions Factory (playsets, including a Pirate Ship set, 2-inch figures, 4-inch figures) at special Ice Age in-store boutiques.  Other partners include Cardinal (Memory Match game, wood puzzle box with floor puzzles, Ice Fishing game) and Accessory Innovations (backpacks, lunch bags). Toysrus.com will also feature Ice Age products (toys and gear). While this specific partnership is exclusive to North America, Ice Age products will be available at Toys”R”Us stores worldwide with specific programs for individual territories.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Stephen Colbert has it – the power of fans – and okay, it helps that he and his writers are super clever too. To that end, Colbert’s many fans have helped drive his new kid’s book deal with Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group, which will publish his kid’s book I Am A Pole (And So Can You!) on May 8, 2012. The book was created for use during Colbert’s hysterical interview with kid’s book author/illustrator Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, Outside Over There, among many others), on The Colbert Report. After the interview, which promptly went viral, Colbert fans started clamoring for copies of the satirical, but not harmful, I Am A Pole (And So Can You!). And here it comes… Grand Central Publishing, who published Colbert’s first book (for grown ups) I Am America (And So Can You!) in 2007, is set to publish his next book, America Again: Re-Becoming the Greatness We Never Weren’t, in October 2012.

Italy’s Rai Gulp, the kids’ channel produced by Rai, will premiere the new second season of Atlantyca Entertainment‘s animated series Geronimo Stilton beginning Thursday, March 1, 2012, The new episodes will air daily at 3:40p. Rai Gulp also continues to air the first season of the series. Additionally, season two of Geronimo Stilton, which initially premiered in October 2011 on RAI 2 (Italy), returns to the channel for a second run weekday mornings beginning February 29, 2012 at 7a. Geronimo Stilton is an Atlantyca Entertainment and Moonscoop Production with the participation of RAI Fiction, France Televisions and M6.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Sesame Workshop promotes Noah Broadwater to VP and Chief Technology Officer. Broadwater determines the strategic technology direction for the company and leads the Information Systems team to serve the Workshop and its stakeholders. He will report to Daryl Mintz, EVP and CFO. Broadwater, who came to the Workshop in 2003 as a consultant, most recently served as VP/Information Systems. Prior to joining the Workshop, Broadwater was a consultant for a range of companies including the New York Times, J.P. Morgan Chase, Canon USA, and Sony. He has been featured in publications for his work and expertise about technology as a change agent, on topics like Identity controls, Open Source, Virtualization, and the consumerization of Enterprise IT, he has also co-authored books on Cloud Computing and Business Process Management.

RATINGS

Cartoon Network’s premiere of the second annual Cartoon Network Hall of Game Awards on Monday, February 20, 7-8:30p, grew its audience over last year’s show (2/25/11) with kid, tween and boys demos, as well as with total viewers.

  • Kids 6-11 (1,170,000) was up +92%
  • Tweens 9-14 (907,000) grew +57%
  • Boys 2-11 (1,025,000) was up +70%
  • Boys 6-11 (886,000) increased +87%
  • Tween Boys 9-14 (690,000) was also up +55%
  • Total Viewers 2+ (2,585,000) increased by 74%
