Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 18, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
The new preschool animated series Doodlebops Rockin’ Road Show from Cookie Jar Entertainment will premiere on Kid’s CBC (Canada) on Saturday, February 20, at 11:30a. Based on the live action Doodlebops series, the new series is a co-production with Argentina’s Illusion Studios and Germany’s OPTIX Entertainment. The series, during which the Doodlebops will help viewers solve age appropriate problems, will air regularly on Kids’ CBC on Saturdays at 11:30a and Wednesdays at 10:30a.
Online video platform Brightcove inks a deal with Turner Broadcasting to support its online video content in the UK, Spain, France, Italy, Germany and other countries across Europe. Turner will use the Brightcove platform to expand its advertising-supported online video offerings and to introduce and manage a range of new enhanced online video programming across its web portals. The first sites to launch with Brightcove include Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Adult Swim. Turner Broadcasting is also utilizing Brightcove’s player styling features and customizable player templates to introduce localized video on Cartoon Network in Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, The Netherlands, Romania Spain and Sweden. Turner expects to roll out additional video content across its websites with the Brightcove platform over the coming months.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Nickelodeon premieres the third season of the preschool music series Yo Gabba Gabba! on Monday, March 8, 10:30a. The new season debuts with a week of new episodes, Monday-Friday, March 8-12, featuring a range guest appearances including Sarah Silverman, Weird Al Yankovic, Black Kids, Jack McBrayer, Paul Scheer, Weezer, Anthony Bourdain, Of Montreal, Mos Def, Devo, The Aquabats, Mark Mothersbaugh, Biz Markie and a special remix by Travis Barker. Created by Christian Jacobs and Scott Schultz, Yo Gabba Gabba!, is produced by The Magic Store and Wildbrain. Returning in their regular segments is Biz Markie in the Biz’s Beat of the Day, Mark Mothersbaugh in Mark’s Magic Pictures and Jack McBrayer and Paul Scheer in the recurring Knock Knock joke segment. The season will include many other celebrity appearances.
HIT Entertainment‘s new Thomas & Friends CG animated feature-length movie, Misty Island Rescue (1×60), will release on DVD from Lionsgate in September 2010 in the US, October in the UK, and rollout thereafter through the end of the year in territories including Australia, Germany, Benelux and Spain. Misty Island Rescue will also be screened at 160 movie theaters in the US via Screenvision in July 2010, and in the UK in 65 Vue Cinemas the weekend of October 2-3, 2010. In the new adventure Thomas the Tank Engine leaves the Island of Sodor for the first time. Through a series of events Thomas ends up along on the mysterious Misty Island where he makes new friends (four new characters) and together they help him find his way back to Sodor. The Misty Island Rescue movie will be supported by Thomas & Friends licensees around the world including, Fisher-Price, Random House, Egmont, Mega Bloks and Learning Curve, which will release 75+ tie-in products (e.g. books, games, engine, playsets and apparel) based on the title. Misty Island Rescue will also be promoted via a microsite at www.thomasandfriends.com as well as via Thomas’ Facebook fan page.
IDW Publishing enters into an exclusive partnership with bestselling author James Patterson to publish original comic stories and graphic novel adaptations of his novels. The partnership gets underway this May 2010 with a five-part story based on Patterson’s young adult novel, Witch & Wizard. Under this partnership, Patterson will develop new original comic book stories, exclusively with IDW. IDW will also create and publish comics and adaptations based on Patterson‘s books, including a comic version of his non-fiction book, The Murder of King Tut, which begins in June with novelist/comic writer Alexander Irvine (Daredevil: Noir) and features artwork by two artists, Christopher Mitten (Wasteland) and Ron Randall).

United Media extends its deal with HarperCollins Children’s Books to develop and manage a licensing program based on the classic bedtime book, Goodnight Moon, by author Margaret Wise Brown and illustrator Clement Hurd. United Media is developing a lifestyle program for Goodnight Moon merchandise with products in categories including apparel/accessories, domestics, room decor, gifts and infant and preschool toys. United Media also continues to work with HarperCollins Children’s Books on Fancy Nancy.
Toei Animation names US-based Firefly Brand Management as the North American licensing agent for Toei’s Digimon franchise. Firefly will be responsible for merchandise licensing for the first fives seasons of animated Digimon series.
Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) and apparel manufacturer Mighty Fine team up to create a line of fashion t-shirts based on characters from Cartoon Network’s classic TV series including Johnny Bravo, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Dexter’s Laboratory, Cow and Chicken, Samurai Jack and Ed, Edd & Eddy. The two-year deal will include a line of young men’s and junior’s t-shirts, knit tops and fleece that will debut at Hot Topic retailers and roll out to other specialty and retailers nationwide. In case anyone on the creative team is wondering, I’m looking for a Plank shirt.
Gator Group announces a new licensing agreement between Emily the Strange creators, Cosmic Debris Etc. and US-based Hybrid Apparel for a new range of t-shirts and sweatshirts and cold weather accessories (e.g. hats, scarves, gloves, thermals) for girls and juniors with “do it yourself” style and an attitude of unique individual style. The Emily the Strange-themed products will launch for back to school 2010.
The A-Team movie and toys are headed our way later this year. Twentieth Century Fox Licensing and Merchandising introduces a new line of action figures and vehicles from Jazwares this week at Toy Fair 2010. The line, which is based on the movie, includes 3 3/4 action figures (A-Team members and villains), a 12-inch B.A. Baracus and Hannibal Smith collector figures with voice chips, and the classic A-Team van. The A-Team movie opens wide on June 11, 2010.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Geri Wang is named President/Sales & Marketing, ABC Television Network. Wang, who had been SVP/Primetime Sales for ABC, will now oversee sales and marketing efforts across al dayparts of the ABC Television Network, which include Primetime, Daytime, ABC News, Late Night, as well as ABC Interactive and Sales Development. She will also oversee Disney/ABC Unlimited, Disney’s cross-platform sales unit, in addition to as sales and integrated marketing efforts for SOAPnet. Wang will report directly to Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair, Disney Media Networks & President, Disney/ABC Television Group.
