Cynopsis: DIGITAL
02/18/10

Good morning, it’s Thursday, February 18, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

HBO unveiled its HBOGo.com broadband video service, launching initially today with some 600 hours of programming to Verizon FiOS HBO customers with the tagline, “It’s HBO. On Your Computer.” (HBO content is also available through Comcast’s newly rebranded Fancast Xfinity TV service.) Entire catalogues of original shows won’t typically be available (The Wire and The Sopranos are notable exceptions,) but new episodes will be offered just one hour after their start time on linear broadcast, per B&C. Another selling point will be the ability to offer movies online within HBO’s negotiated window – earlier than rival services like Netflix who are finding their access pushed back by companies like HBO’s sister studio Warner Bros. The network is currently in discussions with other cable and satellite providers to offer the service and hopes to also enable Droid handset owners to view the content in the coming months.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Premium content services including Blockbuster On Demand movies, Paramount Pictures films and Barnes & Noble eReader titles will be available on T-Mobile‘s new 3G powered HTC HD2 handset, launching on the Windows mobile platform March 24. One cool feature will be the ability to pause a Blockbuster movie you’re watching, then resume it on your broadband-connected television or Blu-ray player.

TODAYshow.com is featuring a live interactive video through today allowing users to view the Vancouver Olympic set from the same perspective as Matt, Meredith, Ann and Al. The Immersive Media-powered live video stream, which like those virtual home tours allows you to view the set from a 360-degree perspective, runs from 7 am to 10 am ET.

Turner’s NBA Digital reported a bump in usage with its coverage of the NBA All-Star game, attracting more than 17 million viewers and delivering a record 4.95 million video streams on Sunday. NBA Mobile initiatives, including a slam dunk app for Android and the iPhone, also experienced a 146% y/y increase in visitors.

IFC.com is streaming the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences’ (AIAS) 13th annual Interactive Awards Show live again this year tonight at 10 pm ET, hosted by gaming enthusiast Jay Mohr.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

LA-based online video producers Pith-e Productions are shopping a spin-off of its C.S.I. take-off Safety Geeks. One of the first live action web series to be shot in digital stereoscopic 3D, “Safety Geeks 3D” will be positioned for platforms and devices that support the technology, such as Sony’s upcoming 3D-compatible BRAVIA line of LCD TV’s.

Mobile content sharing service Thwapr is teaming with NY-based ad agency The Ad Store to develop a new type of social mobile advertising utilizing Thwapr’s mobile video platform and service.

Q&A app maker ChaCha has launched three Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to developers, providing free access to integrate ChaCha’s database of questions and answers to third party apps.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Coming out of the latest downturn with some impressive growth numbers, online video ad player YuMe has raised an additional $25 million of funding in round led by newcoming investor Menlo Ventures. With customers such as MSN, Glam Media and MSNBC, YuMe says it reached profitability last year, serving an average of 30 million in stream video ads/day in Dec. to multiple video platforms. Recent YuMe innovations include a new interactive video format that allows advertisers to customize the experience and a dynamic live video ad insertion product.

The iVdopia mobile ad network announced the release of an Android SDK, enabling developers to extend video ad formats to Google’s Android platform. Following iPhone campaigns with major brands including Coke Zero, Warner Brothers and Miller Lite, iVdopia is adding social features, sponsorship, and “instant-play” video to its Android solution.

AdultSwim.com
is launching a two-pronged user-generated themed “Have it Your Way” campaign with Burger King. It includes offering fans the chance to vote on pilot episodes to determine which new shows should make it to Adult Swim’s air.  The top-ranked viewer-selected pilot will air on Adult Swim the week of Mar. 22. An on air and online sweepstakes will then offer one viewer the chance to program the network for an entire night.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

An analysis of how Super Bowl ads effected social media engagement by OpenAmplify found that Audi had the most powerful bump following the game. The company analyzed how people commented on, linked to and reacted to the ads posted on YouTube’s adblitz Channel, examining how links to the ads were commented on and circulated across social media in platforms. Google’s Parisian Love spot attracted the most reactions by far, but finished second overall as nearly half of the chatter around the ad was negative. Dodge, Volkswagen and Kia ads also finished in the top 10.

  • Super Bowl ads for Snickers (89%), Google (87%), Volkswagen (79%), and Coke (74%) had the highest percentage of positive reactions across social media
  • ‘Love’ and ‘LOL’ were the most used terms associated with positively-received ads from Snickers, Google, Volkswagen and Coke
  • Audi and Dr. Pepper had a polarizing effect, where audiences were split nearly down the middle on whether they liked the ad or not

The made for broadband content industry continues to grow in fits and starts in the U.S. and Europe where some $50 million was spent on original series last year, according to a new analysis from Content Economics Research. Not surprisingly UK public broadcaster BBC has spent more money producing made-for-broadband content than any US TV broadcasters, but indies and Sony’s Crackle portal helped to pick up the slack. (Overall, U.S. web production leads other countries by a long shot.) The total market is forecast to grow by 31% CAGR to $150 million in 2013.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Sony‘s answer to the iPad is the $199 Dash Personal Internet Viewer due out in April, a Wi-Fi capable tablet device with a 7″ LCD WVGA touch screen that also automatically adjusts the display for horizontal or vertical viewing. Sony is leveraging existing content partnerships struck through its Bravia line of TVs to bring lots of popular services including Netflix movies, eHow videos and Pandora music stations. A partnership with Chumby will also deliver over 1,000 internet apps.

Meredith‘s new The Mixing Bowl iPhone app gives users access to recipes and activities on its MixingBowl.com food site. Social features include the ability to rate recipes, share recipes and connections or chat with other home chefs while they cook.

A trio of free newly updated real estate apps from business forecaster Dan Burrus offers location-based access to MLS listed properties. “Complete Foreclosures” targets bank owned and short sale properties; “Complete Homes” covers all local listings; and “Complete Rentals” scans rental properties.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Former Chairman and CEO of The Interpublic Group David Bell will be joining online ad technology firm Resonate‘s Board of Directors.

As part of a new investment round, Shawn Carolan, a Managing Director for Menlo Ventures, joined YuMe‘s Board of Directors.

SB Nation has hired NBC Sports and Olympics veteran Zach Chapman and former MySpace executive David Borstein, formerly of MySpace, to round out its Direct Sales Team. Both will be responsible for driving revenue nationally and furthering partnerships with clients and agencies.

Santa Monica, CA-based content management platform ContentBridge named Christian Solomon to its Board of Advisors.
