If Apple can launch a tablet subscription service, Google can surely do it for cheaper. Google One Pass will allow publishers to customize their offerings as they experiment with different business models, including subscriptions, day passes, metered access or charging for a la carte articles through their websites or mobile apps, according to a Google blog post. More important, Google will only take a 10% share of the revenue according to reports `- one third of what Apple is demanding. The service is now available for publishers in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S, with Media General, Popular Science and Prisa among the publishers who have already signed on.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
 

One way to sidestep iTunes’ limitations when it comes to adding extras and other goodies is to launch the movie as a free standing app. Warner Bros. became the first studio to take this approach, launching “App Editions” of feature films “Inception” and “The Dark Knight” across the globe, the first of a full line-up of planned releases. The cool touchscreen interface allows users to add to their social networking feeds and access behind the scenes videos, production stills, concept art and other extras while they’re watching. Although prices will vary by country, iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users in the U.S. can download interactive versions of `”Inception” for $11.99 and “The Dark Knight” for $9.99. (And yes, the movies are Airplay compatible, enabling easy viewing on your television through your in home Wi-Fi network.)

 
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Digital coupon site Groupon has retained a headhunting firm and has approached Hulu CEO Jason Kilar to see if he’s interested in becoming the company’s head of worldwide operations, reports Bloomberg.
 
Playing upon the central theme of its stable of transformation-based reality shows, cable network A&E launched a community outreach program to inspire people to make positive changes in their own lives. Ad-supported PSAs and on-air vignettes will help promote the program and the website RealLifeChange.com will entice users to commit to making changes involving diet, health, behaviors, etc. A&E is pledging $1 for every person who signs up, which they can direct to their favorite charity.
 
My Damn Channel unveiled a sneak peak of its fish-out-of-water comedy series Gigi: Almost American, co-produced by BBC Worldwide Prods. and created by Josh Gad and his fellow comedy troupe members of The Lost Nomads. (Josh is also starring in Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s Broadway Musical, “The Book of Mormon,” opening March 24, the day after the 10-episode show premiers.)
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
The WPP Group is forming a new umbrella digital agency dubbed Possible Worldwide to encompass the digital operations of multiple existing agencies including Schematic, Bridge Worldwide, BLUE and Quasar. Possible’s headquarters will be in New York and another 17 other offices will be maintained across the globe.
 
The length of video ads has less impact on completion rates than the length of the content they appear within or the position of the ads in the content, according to online video infrastructure company FreeWheel video ad network’s 2010 Video Monetization Report. Regardless of ad length, ads placed as mid-rolls within long-form content (20+ minutes) are most likely to be viewed through to completion (91%) – indicating higher engagement among longer form, premium content. Other trends include:

  • While pre-roll continue to make up the majority of ad placements, mid-rolls have grown faster in the past year
  • Video ad volume (pre-roll, mid-roll and post-roll) doubled overall to 6.3 billion impressions between Q3 and Q4
  • the :15 ad has emerged as the most common ad length, representing 58% of all video ads served

 
Hulu again topped all sites in delivering video ads in Jan. despite only reaching 8% of the U.S. population, with the ave. Hulu viewer watching 44 ads during the month, according to ComScore. Tremor Media remained the top ad network with 503.7 million ad views.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
A group of Republican senators led by Senate Commerce Committee ranking member Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) filed a resolution of disapproval yesterday aimed at repealing FCC’s net neutrality order, which cleared the commission along party lines last year. The effort was joined by a similar measure by the ranking GOP chairmen of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Telecom subcommittee. A resolution blocking the measure would have to clear both houses of Congress and presumably survive a veto issued by President Obama, who has gone on the record several times supporting net neutrality. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski issued a statement in response defending the measure.
 
Lawmakers criticized Google and Yahoo for turning down invitations to testify at yesterday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on rogue websites that promote piracy. Both company’s search engines have been accused of pointing users to offending sites.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
After a row that involved unauthorized usage of its Angry Birds franchise, Rovio and Microsoft have kissed and made up announcing plans to finally launch a version of the addictive mobile game for Windows Phone 7, per Pocket-lint. The developer is also working on a 3D version of the game.
 
The free Disney Radio app has now launched for Android, offering access to the 24/7 Disney Radio stream with multitasking functionality including the ability to request songs, text, browse the internet and email while listening. The iOS version of the app has been downloaded more than 1.4 million times, according to Disney.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Former Schematic CEO, Trevor Kaufman, will serve as Global CEO of WPP Digital’s new Possible Worldwide, joined by Jay Woffington as Global President, Michael Graham as COO, Bob Gilbreath as Chief Strategy Officer, Diane Holland as CFO and Harish Bahl as Chief Production Officer. Nick Worth will serve as President, Americas and Kenny Powar will serve as President, Asia Pacific and Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
 
Seattle-based social game developer Double Down Interactive (Double Down Casino) tapped former Big Fish Games executive Glenn Walcott as its new President.
 
Lisa Hsia
, credited with such innovations as the Bravo Talk Bubble, has been upped to the new position of EVP/Bravo Digital Media. She will continue to report to Frances Berwick, President of Bravo, in New York.
 
Simulmedia announced the formation of a strategic alliance with MAGNAGLOBAL, strategic investment unit for Mediabrands and IPG agencies, to produce research, case studies and recommendations on TV and commercial viewing targeting. As part of this partnership, Brian Wieser will join Simulmedia as Chief Marketing Officer to lead the effort.
 
Former Aniboom CMO Larry Lieberman has joined LA-based social advertising company SocialVibe as Chief Marketing Officer.
 
IGN Entertainment President and man about town Roy Bahat has joined Revision3‘s Board of Directors.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
MTV is launching new live tagging contest around its hit reality series Jersey Shore with innovative TV watching app IntoNow, (a spin off from video management firm Auditude), that allows fans to connect around shows and share comments via Facebook and Twitter. The IntoNow app is kind of a cross between Shazam and Miso TV – it listens to what show you’re watching and pulls up the exact episode from its database, which covers 120 channels and 5 years of programming. Then it allows you to share with your friends what you’re watching, pull up what your friends have watched or are currently watching or even add back episodes of the show to your Netflix queue or iTunes wallet. MTV is providing an incentive to users to “tag” or check in live to the remaining 6 premiere episodes of Jersey Shore this season. Demonstrating you’re “Now Into” the show will provide you with a chance to win a trip for two to the season four premiere and admission to the season four premiere party. MTV is a also using IntoNow to enable viewers to peer a little closer into Liz Lee’s “Life as Liz”; users can now pull up the “My List with Liz” feature to see what current shows Liz is loyal to. (That’s a lot of alliteration from anxious anchors placed in powerful posts.)
