Showtime plans to air two 30m comedy series in a one-hour block on Mondays starting June 16, as Weeds returns for a fourth season at 10p and the British series Secret Diary of a Call Girl premieres at 1030p with eight episodes. Showtime ordered thirteen episodes of Weeds with production beginning in April from Lionsgate in association with Tilted Productions. Secret Diary of a Call Girl is an IMG/Tiger Aspect/Silverapples Media/ARG production. BBC America will soon increase its news offerings with Newsnight a new weekly program airing Fridays at 10p starting February 29. This state-side version will include features, investigations, interviews and discussions anchored by Jeremy Paxman, Kirsty Wark, Gavin Esler and Emily Maitlis. Newsnight will repeat on global news channel BBC World. Bravo’s weekly competition series Step It Up & Dance opens April 3 at 10p with 12 men and women competing in a variety of dance styles to become the winner of $100,000. Dancer/actress Elizabeth Berkley will host and choreographer Jerry Mitchell will mentor the dancers while choreographers Vincent Paterson and Nancy O’Meara will judge. USA Network scheduled the new drama In Plain Sight starring Mary McCormack on Thursdays at 10p and will open with a 90-minute episode on April 24. USA will air 12 episodes of the drama produced by Universal Media Studios. Following the story yesterday that CBS Sports‘ CSTV will become the CBS College Sports Network, and CSTV’s online properties will be incorporated into the new network, came the news of as many as 40 job cuts within CSTV. The following statement was made by CBS Sports: “With the staff actions completed today, the management team of CBS Sports has created a fully rebranded entity that includes the new CBS College Sports Network (formerly CSTV) and, with the full participation of CBS Interactive, a wide range of online activities that fit well with the successful CBSSports.com. We believe these changes at CBS College Sports will best position the new enterprise to fulfill its promise within the CBS Sports family of assets.” Multiplatform advertising sales firm, WorldLink signed a station rep deal for Post-Newsweek Stations in six markets and four LATV affiliates owned and operated by Post-Newsweek. WorldLink will handle all longform direct response ad sales for stations KPRC/Houston, WDIV/Detroit, WPLG/Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, WKMG/Orlando, KSAT/San Antonio and WJXT/Jacksonville, in addition to short and longform direct response ad sales for LATV affiliates in Houston, Orlando, Miami and San Antonio. Summer TCA has been scheduled to begin July 8th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Which networks would attend will depend on how much they are able to ramp up in time to make announcements at this event, and the SAG contract renewal will also be an issue. TNT gave the go-ahead for a new action drama series Leverage starring Timothy Hutton and executive produced by Dean Devlin (Independence Day) and John Rogers (Cosby). TNT greenlit 13 episodes produced by Devlin’s Electric Entertainment and will premiere the series later this year. The drama is about a team of thieves, hackers and grifters who act as modern-day Robin Hoods, seeking revenge against the powerful and rich who victimize others. Reality production company Evolution Media has signed a development agreement with psychiatrist and brain expert Dr. Daniel G. Amen, whose use of brain imaging in clinical psychiatric practice has helped those with severe brain dysfunctions. He is an expert in using both medication and natural supplements to optimize brain function and is the CEO/Medical Director of Amen Clinics, Inc. ABC Family has ordered a new project based on the Samurai series of novels targeting young adults, about a teenager who discovers her adoptive father is also the head of the Japanese mafia. Samurai Girl from Alloy Entertainment and ABC Studios picks up with the teen played by Jamie Chung, goes into training to become a Samurai, with the end goal of destroying her father’s empire. ABC Family will present this project as a “major event” in three 2-hour episodes, airing late this summer. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Congressman Ed Markey (D.,Mass.) and Rep. Chip Pickering (R. Miss.) introduced the “Internet Freedom Preservation Act” on Tuesday to help prevent discriminatory bandwidth allocation practices by ISPs such as Comcast, long accused of interrupting the connections of P2P users without properly notifying customers. (Comcast finally admitted to the practice in a new filing to the FCC this week.) Other ISPs are complaining to regulators that video is heavily taxing their networks; Time Warner estimates that 5% of its users account for 50% of the bandwidth usage on many parts of its network, according to the Wall Street Journal. Chorion is currently developing an online virtual Trucktown world and expects to launch a website in June 2008, followed by a range of toys that build on the interactivity of the site. Jon Scieszka’s Trucktown will be published by Simon & Schuster imprints: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers (hardcover), Aladdin Paperbacks (ready-to-read original paperbacks), Little Simon (novelty), and Simon Scribbles (coloring/activity).
