Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 10, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
CBBC orders up two seasons of the new game show Gory Games (13×26) from the team the produces Horrible Histories. Hosted by Dave Lamb (Come Dine With Me) and puppet Rattus Rattus (Horrible Histories), Gory Games will pit kid contestants against one another answering questions about history and featuring foul facts, putrid props and scary sketches. Set to debut later this year, some of the questions on Gory Games will be presented by members of the Horrible Histories historical ‘stars’ as well as the author of Horrible Histories books Terry Deary. Gory Games is a Lion TV and Citrus Television co-production for CBBC.
Cookie Jar Entertainment grows its production and development slate featuring Cookie Jar projects aimed at kids and tweens, and from The Jar for teen and adult primetime programming, all for broadcasters in the US and Canada.
Cookie Jar projects for kids/tweens/family
- Know It Alls – the story follows a group of kids at a school for geniuses. Created by Todd Greenwald (Wizards of Waverly Place), the series is being developed for The Hub (US) and Family Channel (Canada).
- Varsity – revolves around a adventures of a misfit cheerleader. From Christy Stratton (King of the Hill), the project is created for TeenNick.
- Ella – based on the kid’s books about an elephant, the imagination-centric preschool series is being developed by Sheila Dinsmore (Caillou) for Disney (US).
- Untitled – a new animated project from Scott Fellows (Big Time Rush) for Teletoon Canada
- Dr. Dimensionpants – an animated series from Brad Peyton (cats & Dogs, Journey to the center of the Universe 2) – in development for Teletoon Canada.
- Currently in production are: Mudpit (26 episodes) a mixed animated/live-action series about high schoolers competing in an online band contest, set to debut on Teletoon Canada in fall 2011; and the live-action series Debra! (13 episodes), about a precocious teen that is starting her own business – slated to launch in May 2011 on Family Channel (Canada).
The Jar projects for young adults/adults
- Blah Girls – the project is based on a web series featuring animated girls that satirize pop culture. Produced by Katalyst and The Jar for MTV.
- Lords of the Playground – a comedy (30min) created by Andrew Orenstein (Malcolm in the Middle) for CBS
- All Over You – a project created by Lori Kirkland Baker (Frasier, Desperate Housewives) for Lifetime Channel
- Spyburbia – follows a family that happens to be a team of spies. Created by Steven De Souza (Die Hard, Beverly Hills Cop), the show is produced by The Jar for Global Television Network (Canada), and also in development for Fox Broadcasting (US).

Teletoon in Canada gets into spring break mode with March Break From Reality, a five day on-air and online event, Monday-Friday, March 14-18, 2011. March Break From Reality will feature the Canadian broadcast premiere of the animated movie Scooby-Doo! Camp Scare (March 15, 6:30p), and a sneak peek at the network’s new original series My Babysitter’s A Vampire (Monday-Thursday, March 14-17 at 8:30p). My Babysitter’s A Vampire is based on Teletoon’s original TV movie of the same name. Other special on-air and online programming for March Break From Reality includes:
- The week will also feature Action Force Mini-Marathons daily (9a-12p) of series including Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, Transformers Prime, G.I. Joe Renegades, The Super Hero Squad Show, and Generator Rex.
- The network premiere of LEGO Ninjago and new episodes of LEGO Hero Factory
- The Teletoon premieres of Kung Fu Panda on Saturday, March 12 (7p) and Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa on Saturday, March 19 (7p)
- Online at Teletoon.com (www.teletoon.com ) viewers are invited to search for a hidden ‘virtual button’ on the site each day March 6-31. Fans will be awarded a letter for each button they find, which in the end they can unscramble to reveal a network secret.
- Additionally, each day March 14-18, Teletoon will feature a Contest Break of the Day, offering prizes to viewers.
Starz acquires all three seasons of DHX Media‘s teen-targeted live action comedy The Latest Buzz (65×22) for the US. An original commission for Family Channel (Canada), The Latest Buzz revolves around a group of 14-year-olds hired to take over a struggling youth-centric magazine, Teen Buzz.
Entertainment One Family (eOne Family) signs broadcast deals for the first season of the 3D animated preschool series Rob the Robot for air this year. Picking up the first season of the series, which is based on the Australian book series of the same name, are NRK (Norway), EBS (Korea) and Lagardere’s preschool-targeted channel Tiji (France). Currently in production, the first 26 episodes of season one of Rob the Robot (out of 52) is set to deliver this year. Rob the Robot was initially commissioned by TVO Kids (Canada), which has already ordered a second. The series is a co-production between Amberwood Entertainment of Canada and One Animation of Singapore and is funded with the support of the MDA, CMF, and the Shaw Rocket Fund.
9 Story Entertainment inks a broadcast deal with Super RTL for 9 Story’s animated comedy Almost Naked Animals (52×11). Under the pact, Super RTL acquires the TV rights, including pay, free and cable rights, to the series for Germany and German-speaking Europe. Almost Naked Animals revolves around a group of underwear-clad animals that run a beachfront hotel and are always on the look out for fun. Heading up the dysfunctional group is top dog/hotel manager, Howie, who has the attention span of an 11-year-old.
Build-A-Bear Workshop is re-developing its virtual world, Bearville.com ( www.bearville.com ), to offer entertainment content for kids/families. The site will is set to re-launch in open beta on March 1, 2011, featuring programming, celebrity interviews, and a craft show in the coming months. Additionally, the new Bearville.com will offer a blog, an arcade of games, while still providing ongoing access to the existing virtual world. The new site is also integrated into Build-A-Bear Workshop stores, the Build-A-Bear mobile app and license product.
BabyFirst, a cable and satellite channel aimed at babies, toddlers and their families, launch a new online learning area BabyU on www.babyfirsttv.com . Specifically created for the under three set, BabyU and its activities are designed with child development and educational psychology experts with three goals in mind: to encourage babies/toddlers sense of curiosity through numbers, language, art and music; as an introduction to computers; and further critical thinking skills.
Classic Media finalizes new licensing deals for the preschool animated series Tinga Tinga Tales, which premieres in the US on Monday, February 14 at 11, as part of the launch of Disney Channel’s new Disney Junior block. New US licensees for Tinga Tinga Tales include Ravensburger (puzzles), Pressman Toy Corp. (games), and University Games (Colorforms products). Existing licensees include master toy partner Bandai and master publishing partner Grosset & Dunlap. Bandai plans to release interactive toys based on the property in fall 2012. Inspired by traditional African folktales and the Tingatinga art style of Tanzania, the series is created by producer Claudia Lloyd (Charlie and Lola) and produced in Africa in association with Homeboyz Entertainment (Kenya), Tiger Aspect Productions working with local African artists and musicians that created design, look and sound of the series.
Wild Creations will introduce its line of Dino Dan licensed Geoworld products for the US next week at Toy Fair. Based on the preschool animated series Dino Dan, which focuses on scientific method and airs on Nick Jr. (US), the new toy line will be available here beginning in fall 2011. The Wild Creations line of Dino Dan products includes excavation kits, prehistoric playsets, fossil replica kits, action figures and Dino Dan outdoor adventure gear. Produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment, the Dino Dan TV series is distributed by Breakthrough Entertainment.
Big Idea Entertainment grows the licensing program for its VeggieTales property with new partnerships for products that will debut at retail this year. New licensees for VeggieTales include: Chick-fil-A (kids meal promotions set for August 2011 featuring one of five different stories on CD with Kids Meal), CTI Industries (Mylar and latex balloons), American Puzzle Company (wooden puzzles and trains), Zoobies (plush pillow and blanket combinations), Victory Designs (kid’s guitars), and Tabbies (index tabs, stickers, temporary tattoos, wall clings).
Coolabi selects enteraction, the social gaming subsidiary of etv media group, to develop the new Facebook application, Purple Ronnie’s Express Yourself ( http://apps.facebook.com/purpleronnie ), based on its Purple Ronnie brand. The social gaming app allows Facebook users to send poems, Valentine’s Day messages and other Purple Ronnie-branded messages (e.g. invites, thank you notes) through online avatars. Users can also acquire avatar items by unlocking some and via in-game purchases for others. A similar mobile version of the app is being developed.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Adam Sanderson is appointed to the new position of SVP/Franchise Management, Disney/ABC Television Group (DATG). Sanderson, who is currently SVP/Brand Marketing, Disney Channels Worldwide, will report to Peter Seymour, EVP/Strategy and Research, Disney Media Networks. Sanderson will head the development of franchise strategy across all DATG business units. He will be responsible for leveraging properties created by Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Radio Disney, ABC Family, ABC Entertainment Group, ABC News, ABC Daytime and Hyperion Publishing. Sanderson joined Disney in 1997 as VP/Marketing, Disney Channel. He previously toiled for FX Networks. MTV Networks, and Conde Nast Traveler, as well as serving as President/Founder Sanderson Associates, an entertainment-marketing firm. Congrats Adam!
ESPN appoints publishing executives to head up two of its female-targeted entities.
- Aimee Crawford is named editor-in-chief for the high school female athlete magazine and digital business, ESPN Rise for Girls. Crawford was formerly Sr. Editor, Sports Illustrated. She has also written/edited for Sports Illustrated for Kids, SI.com, CNN/SI, and was Managing Editor for MLB.com. The ESPN Rise for Girls magazine is published five times a year.
- Tina Johnson, Women’s Health founding editor-in-chief, is appointed editor-in-chief espnW (
