Cynopsis: DIGITAL
12.06.12
Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 6, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Citing a strong competitive landscape, which has been propelled by “surging” Android tablet shipments and demand for Apple’s new iPad Mini, the IDC is increasing its 2012 forecast for worldwide tablet shipments from 117.1 million units to 122.3 million. The market intelligence firm has also raised its 2013 forecast from 165.9 million units to 172.4 million, and now predicts worldwide tablet shipments in 2016 to reach 282.7 million units, up from the previous forecast of 261.4 million units.
When it comes to operating system share, IDC has updated its numbers to now reflect what the firm says is Android’s growing strength in the tablet market. IDC now expects Android’s worldwide tablet share to rise from 39.8% in 2011 to 42.7% for all of 2012. Apple, on the other hand, will see its share drop from 56.3% in 2011 to 53.8% in 2012. Over the long-term, IDC says it believes Windows will make some headway within this market, with an expected market share of 10.3% in 2016.
The 30th iteration of PaleyFest, the Paley Center for Media’s annual two-week celebration of good TV, will take place between March 1 and 15, 2013, from the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. Aaron Sorkin’s HBO drama The Newsroom, NBC’s Revolution, and ABC’s Once Upon a Time are the first three series to be revealed from the roster of programs to be honored at the 30th anniversary Festival. Hulu has been named Premier Sponsor for next year’s event. As part of the sponsorship, the online video site will make a selection of full-length panel content and short-form clips available on-demand via Hulu and Hulu Plus.
What’s Trending, the Emmy-nominated online talk show hosted by Shira Lazar, is partnering with Virgin Mobile to live stream the first annual Tube-a-Tweet-a-Thon Holiday Spectacular, a new variety show to benefit the Covenant House, a non-profit that provides shelters for homeless youth. Scheduled to begin at 9pm ET on December 13 on the What’s Trending YouTube channel, the variety show will bring together a collection of celebrities, musicians, and YouTube stars for a night of comedy acts, musical performances, and more. Performers set to appear during the show include Kevin Pollak, Heather McDonald, Josh Malina, Doug Benson, iJustine, the cast of Annoying Orange, Daily Grace, Pentatonix, The Gregory Brothers, and American Idol’s Pia Toscano. The official hashtag for the event is #Tubathon; for every tweet using said hashtag, Virgin Mobile has pledged to donate $1 to Covenant House, up to $50,000 in total. Virgin Mobile has also set up a page online for viewers who want to contribute to the cause.
Food Network plans to launch a new web series in January called Bobby Flay Fit. Starring the famous chef, the series will focus on Flay’s experience and philosophies on healthy eating and living. Spanning seven episodes that will be made available over the course of one week, the goal of the series is to prove that it takes only seven days to create healthier habits with moderation and exercise. The series will feature recipes, workouts, tip, and guests such as Michael Symon and Katie Lee, all packaged around one of seven daily themes: Moderation, Motivation, Mix-It-Up, Expect More, Discipline, Support, and Wrap-Up. Produced by Rock Shrimp Productions, the series will be available at FoodNetwork.com/Fit beginning January 14.
Discovery Communications and Revision3 are launching DNews, a new online video series/channel that looks to expand Discovery News’ brand and presence online. Available on YouTube, DiscoveryNews.com, and Revision3.com, the show will look to inform audiences about the science behind the biggest stories of the day as well as the technology of the future. Hosts Anthony Carboni (G4’s Attack of the Show!), Laci Green (YouTube video series: Sex+), and Trace Dominguez (This Week in Discovery News) will serve as curators of the most topical stories by producing three original video pieces every weekday.
LogoTV.com has picked up the rights to Vicky & Lysander, a comedy web series that follows the twisted antics of a crazy, social-climbing Manhattan couple. The show, which is based on a critically acclaimed stage show, was created and written by, and stars Shannon Walker and Damon Cardasis, the Co-Founders of the LES Film Festival. It spans 10 episodes and is set to premiere on LogoTV.com on Wednesday, December 19, at 3pm ET. New episodes will be available at the same time every Wednesday.
Chopper Live: The Revenge is an upcoming live event from the Discovery Channel that will pit American Chopper’s Paul Teutul Sr. and Paul Teutul Jr. against Outlaw Garage’s Jesse James and Fast N’ Loud’s Richard Rawlings and Aaron Kaufman against each other to see which one of them is the best bike builder. Hosted by Sal Masekela, the show airs this coming Tuesday, December 11, at 9pm ET/PT. To promote and boost engagement for the program, Discovery is rolling out an array of digital and social extensions via ChopperLive.com, an online hub for the latest videos, team bios, Twitter chatter, and more. Beginning on December 8, fans will be able to access behind-the-scenes footage from Vegas (where the live event is set to take place). Then, right before Tuesday’s live event, viewers will be able to watch Backstage Pass, hosted by Chris Jacobs (Overhaulin’), featuring interviews with builders during on-air commercial breaks, coverage of what’s buzzing on Twitter, and more.

AOL’s Advertising.com Group has acquired Buysight, a provider of retargeting and intent-based targeted advertising solutions. “We strongly believe that both brand and performance display, as well as mobile and video campaigns benefit from dynamic, targeted creatives and messaging,” said Ned Brody, CEO of the Advertising.com Group, adding that the acquisition of Buysight will bring “proven” Dynamic Creative Optimization and machine learning capabilities, which should further enhance Advertising.com Group’s optimization engine, AdLearn. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Advertising.com Group includes Advertising.com, ADTECH, The AOL On Network, goviral, and Pictela.
Activision, MEC Global, and Millennial Media have partnered to launched a new mobile rich media ad campaign for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, the latest installment of the popular video game franchise. The campaign is the first to use Millennial’s new Photo Shoot rich media feature, which will allow consumers to directly insert themselves into an ad. The creative is running as both an expandable banner and an interstitial. When a consumer sees the ad, an image of a Call of Duty soldier appears. He or she will then be prompted to pull up their camera and take a picture. Once it’s snapped, the consumer’s face will be inserted on to the image of the soldier. The consumer can then download and/or share the custom image. Targeted to gaming enthusiasts and men 18-34, the ad units will also direct consumers to a Call of Duty mobile website, which features game trailers and other content.
It’s not just an Xbox 360 world, apparently: Netflix has selected the Sony PlayStation 3 as its primary development platform. The OTT content provider will test, develop, and deploy new features and advanced controls on the PS3 before they’re available on any of Netflix’s other distribution platforms. “PS3 is our largest TV-connected platform in terms of Netflix viewing, and this year, at times, even surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment to become our No. 1 platform overall,” said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in a statement.
The latest Cross-Platform Report from Nielsen indicates that almost one-fifth of US homes have become tablet owners. And even though tablet owners generally tend to be older than smartphone owners, they’re increasingly using their devices to “dive deeper into programming.” According to the report, 36% of consumers between the ages of 35 and 54, and 44% of people ages 55-64, use their tablets at least once a day while watching TV. Nearly 33% of tablet users 25-64 check sports scores while watching games. Interestingly, while there isn’t much of a difference between males and females in terms of how often they use their tablet while they’re watching TV, there is when the focus shifts to smartphones. Over 40% of female smartphone owners use the device at least once a day while watching TV, compared to 35% of male smartphone owners.
Here’s some more tablet data: The global tablet market surpassed 32 million shipments in the third quarter of 2012, growing 75% year-over-year, according to new research from Futuresource Consulting. The US is currently leading the way in terms of tablet adoption. It currently accounts for 43% of global tablet ownership, and is on its way to achieve an installed base of nearly 90 million devices by the end of 2012, per the Futuresource data.
