~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

NBC announced a cadre of midseason offerings with “set your Tivo” premiere and finale dates:

  • A new hour-long The Office snags the coveted spot immediately following Super Bowl XLIII on February 1 at 1030p.
  • Starting February 2, NBC will air a 3-D episode of Chuck at 8p, followed by a new volume of Heroes at 9p and Medium at 10p.
  • Season finale of frosh drama Knight Rider is slated for February 25 at 8p.
  • Two-hour episodes of Celebrity Apprentice will air on Sundays beginning March 1 at 9p.
  • ER will bow out with a two-hour series finale on March 12 at 9p.
  • The anticipated two-hour series premiere of Kings opens March 19 at 9p (the series moves to its regular time slot of 10p Thursdays starting March 26).

Showtime will renew the David Duchovny starring drama, Californication for a third season with 12 episodes scheduled to premiere late next year.

Hispanic network Telemundo delivered its best performance during November 2008 in the last 16 years among total viewers in Monday-Friday primetime. Based on Nielsen’s data, Telemundo averaged 1.2 million total viewers Monday-Friday prime which also equates to a +27% jump over November 2007. Among A18-49, Telemundo also averaged 659,000 viewers which is a year-to-year increase of +26% in this demo. Additionally, Telemundo gained an average of 389,000 A18-34 viewers over November 2007.

A&E Network debuts the new real-life original series The Exterminators on January 7 at 1030p. The series focuses on Billy Bretherton and his family who own and operate Vexcon, a bustling Louisiana pest removal company. During thirteen 30m episodes, viewers will watch as the team removes everything from an invasion of ants in a home to huge snakes. September Films, a division of DCD Media produces the series for A&E.

Also opening on January 7, is The CW’s new horror/reality series 13  Fear Is Real at 8p. The elimination competition series follows thirteen contestants as they battle to stay in the game while coming face-to-face with their deepest fears. The lone person remaining will win a grand prize of $66,666. Also airing on Wednesday nights, will be a repeat showing of 90210 at 9p and encore episodes of 13  Fear Is Real will air on Fridays at 9p starting January 9. The new series is produced by Magic Molehill Productions, Inc. and Warner Horizon Television Inc. in association with Jay Bienstock Productions and Ghost House Pictures.

ABC’s Dancing with the Stars may have just ended, yet the network has announced the eighth season two-hour premiere is scheduled for March 9 at 8p followed a week later by the first Dancing with the Stars Results Show on March 17 at 9p. BBC Worldwide Productions produces this U.S. version.

Tonight at midnight, LOGO premieres a new weekly film series called Graveyard Shift featuring a zany array of horror films, cult classics and campy musicals. The on-air and online series opens tonight with the world debut of The Gay Bed & Breakfast of Terror.

Oxygen’s season three debut of The Bad Girls Club Tuesday night at 10p attracted 568,000 A18-49, 405,000 W18-49, 337,000 W18-34 and 807,000 total viewers. This episode earned the distinction of being Oxygen’s most watched season premiere ever.

Hallmark Channel and Google formed an agreement where advertisers will have access to Hallmark’s family-friendly programming through the Google TV Ads initiative. The deal commences early 2009 allowing advertisers, many of them first-time TV buyers, the ability to place on ads on both the Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel via the Google TV Ads platform.

The iconic holiday Yule Log is back via iN DEMAND Networks and Comcast, Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks VOD subscribers can tune into the televised log as well as two new offerings: Winter Green and Snowman beginning December 8 through the end of the month. iN DEMAND has jazzed up the Yule Log, which originated in 1966, by producing a hi-def version with crackling sound effects; Winter Green is a snowy, pine forest scene; and Snowman shows off a dapper snowman bravely standing in a snowstorm. All three VOD titles are accompanied by holiday music and are available free to customers.

Viewers may choose the Yule Log offered by WGN America as the network will air Yule Log: The Golden Age of Christmas over nine hours beginning December 24 at 9p through 6a on December 25. This Yule Log footage uses the fireplace of Colonel McCormick, the former Tribune Company President and Editor/Publisher of the Chicago Tribune, from his office at Tribune Tower in Chicago. This commercial-free holiday special will present classic radio programs such as It’s a Wonderful Life, Burns & Allen and Fibber McGee & Molly and more.

Katz Radio Group, a division of Katz Media Group Inc. will now represent ICBC Broadcast Holdings, Inc., owner and operator of 17 radio stations in New York, San Francisco, Columbia, SC and Jackson, MS.

A second full season of Andrew Young Presents was picked up for 2009. Produced by Sewee Entertainment, the series of hour-long quarterly specials produced in hi-def, has been cleared in more than 80% of the U.S. including 38 of the top 40 markets. Stations renewing the series include WNYW-WWOR/New York; WTXF/Philadelphia; WTTG-WDCA/Washington, D.C.; KCBS-KCAL/Los Angeles; WSB/Atlanta; WFTV/Orlando; and WSOC/Charlotte. The program also airs overseas in more than 175 countries.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

CBS EYEtoo Productions, a unit of CBS News specializing in original nonfiction and reality programming for television, optioned an unscripted series called The Secret Truth from the producing/writing team of Jasper Cole, Michael T. Kennedy and Jake P. Hall. The Secret Truth will document emotional stories from real people who choose to reveal a hidden secret for the first time. CBS EYEtoo is also currently producing the fourteen-episode series NextWorld for Discovery, the weekly news program Brink for The Science Channel and is involved with the fifth season of The Next Food Network Star for Food Network.

Former Party of Five actress, Neve Campbell will co-star in NBC’s midseason drama The Philanthropist from Universal Media Studios, cites THR. Campbell will play the wife of the main character’s business partner and friend, Phillip (played by Jesse Martin).

VH1 approved an eight-episode order for Tough Love a new reality series from Nancy Juvonen and Drew Barrymore’s company Flower Films, per Variety. Steve Ward will host the series and his job will be to shape up and shake out bad dating habits from a group of women living together who are all ready to meet Mr. Right. High Noon Entertainment will also co-produce.

NESN’s Comedy All-Stars was renewed for a second season and eight new episodes of the stand-up comedy series opens in May 2009. The series, showcasing three different comedians performing each week at the Comedy Connection in the Wilbur Theatre in Boston, is hosted by Tommy Davidson and produced by Barry Katz and New Wave Entertainment.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Microsoft’s in game ad unit Massive tried to drum up interest in the video game advertising medium by hosting New York’s first In Game Ad Upfront event yesterday. The biggest news to come from the event is a multi-year deal to serve ads for the newly joined Activision Blizzard (a merger that officially closed on Tuesday to create the industry’s biggest game publisher.) Massive announced two deals, actually. The company signed a multi-year extension to its in-game ad partnership with Activision spanning 18 games and franchises including Guitar Hero: World Tour and the Tony Hawk series. Massive also announced a new tie up to run ads on Blizzard’s websites and Battle.net portal, the online gamer’s first third-party ad deal. Expanded offerings including around-game ads, website sponsorships and other custom advertising opportunities are included in the deal. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Alfred Hedgehog (52×11), a new animated series aimed at K6-9 is currently in pre-production in Paris and Montreal. The series revolves around adventures of Alfred Hedgehog, a hedgehog detective, and aims to encourage scientific exploration, problem solving and teamwork.  Muse Entertainment and Gaumont Alphanim are producing the show for TVO, TFO, Radio-Canada and Knowledge Network in Canada and France 5 in France.  Gaumont Alphanim and Muse Distribution International will distribute the series worldwide.  Created by Merilyn Read (The Tom Green Show, Babar and Father Christmas) and Mary Mackay-Smith (Dot, Caillou), Alfred Hedgehog is executive story-edited by Mackay-Smith, Peter Saisselain (Zombie Hotel, GAWAYN), and directed by Frederic Dybowski (Galactik Football), and designed by Jan Van Rijsselberge (Robotboy) and Stephane Gallard (La Prophetie des grenouilles).  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  The U.K.’s Icon Films is taking history with History to a whole new level.  The producer has been commissioned by the channel to produce the 120-minute All About Dung (nope, not kidding), hosted by Royal Marine-turned-Marine Biologist Monty Halls.  The show takes in depth looks at the historical, cultural, medical, scientific and evolutionary importance of human and animal waste.  All About Dung will air internationally on History (already aired in the U.S.) with global distribution to be handled by AETN International.   Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis:  CBS opened the month in charge Monday night at 2.9/7 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. ABC’s two annual holiday specials began the night at 8p in the lead with an average of 3.5/9, while CBS’ repeat comedies Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother came in second with an average of 2.6/6. NBC won the 9p hour with Heroes at 3.6/9 while CBS’ other two sitcom reruns: Two and a Half Men/Worst Week followed with an average of 3.1/7. CBS then had the final win at 10p with an encore of CSI: Miami at 3.1/8 while ABC’s Boston Legal came next at 2.2/6.

Tuesday – A18-49 Analysis: FOX blew the top off Tuesday night winning with 4.3/11 A18-49 according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX’s House ushered in a win during 8p with 5.0/14 followed by CBS’ NCIS at 3.7/10. Through the 9p hour, CBS’ The Mentalist and NBC’s The Biggest Loser tied for first place at 3.8/9 while FOX’s Fringe was just a couple of paces behind at 3.6/9. Also this hour, ABC premiered its long-running comedy According to Jim with two back-to-back episodes delivering a 2.2/6 at 9p and a 2.0/5 at 930p. NBC was the solo winner at 10p with Law & Order: SVU at 3.6/10 while CBS’ Without a Trace found itself in second place with 2.6/7.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Josh Howard, VP/Long Form at CNBC is departing the network, according to B&C. Josh’s contract expires next week and based on anticipated cutbacks at the network, he did not ask for his contract to be reupped. Josh joined CNBC three years ago after being asked to resign at CBS News over the 60 Minutes II report that questioned President Bush’s service with the Texas Air National Guard.

Travel Channel Media tapped Lori Rothschild Ansaldi to Executive Producer/Travel Journalist of the unit’s new short-form division. Lori will supervise the daily operations of the Travel Channel Academy, the in-house digital training arm, as well as produce destination content for TravelChannel.com. Lori will report to Susan Norton, VP/Short Form Production, Travel Channel Media.

Josh Feldman was elevated to VP/New York Sales Manager with Cartoon Network and Adult Swim Ad Sales. Josh most recently served as VP/Adult Swim Ad Sales and will now oversee Cartoon Network sales and manage the New York sales office consisting of two sales teams. Based in New York, Josh will remain reporting to John O’Hara, EVP/Cartoon Network and Adult Swim Ad Sales and Marketing.

Joanna Drake Earl advances to COO with Current Media where she will provide oversight for Current’s TV network operations as well as continue to manage the company’s new media unit. Joanna works out of the company’s San Francisco headquarters and reports to Joel Hyatt CEO/Co-Founder.
