Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 4, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.  

Alfred Hedgehog (52×11), a new animated series aimed at K6-9 is currently in pre-production in Paris and Montreal. The series revolves around adventures of Alfred Hedgehog, a hedgehog detective, and aims to encourage scientific exploration, problem solving and teamwork.  Muse Entertainment and Gaumont Alphanim are producing the show for TVO, TFO, Radio-Canada and Knowledge Network in Canada and France 5 in France.  Gaumont Alphanim and Muse Distribution International will distribute the series worldwide.  Created by Merilyn Read (The Tom Green Show, Babar and Father Christmas) and Mary Mackay-Smith (Dot, Caillou), Alfred Hedgehog is executive story-edited by Mackay-Smith, Peter Saisselain (Zombie Hotel, GAWAYN), and directed by Frederic Dybowski (Galactik Football), and designed by Jan Van Rijsselberge (Robotboy) and Stephane Gallard (La Prophetie des grenouilles).

Lincoln Butterfield Animation is developing a new series and publishing property about those pesky monsters that come out at night and their fears and anxieties, per C21 Media.  Titled RIP MD, Lincoln Butterfield plans to showcase the project at NATPE next month.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Contender Entertainment Group and Studio AKA‘s animated special Lost and Found (1×25) will be broadcast on Channel 4 (UK) this Christmas at 12:30p.  Narrated by noted actor Jim Broadbent, the special is based on author Oliver Jeffers book, Lost and Found.

Pocoyo and the Space Circus (1×25), a special from Zinkia and ITV Global Entertainment Ltd will air over Christmas on TVE1 (Spain) as part of an exclusively produced 45-minute Pocoyo content block.

Mediatoon inks further TV and video rights deals for its series The Magic Roundabout.  Additionally, a second season of 52×11 episodes of The Magic Roundabout is currently underway.  Picking up the TV rights to the preschool series are: Italia 1 (Italy); TV2 (Norway); YLE (Finland); TRT (Turkey); EESTI (Estonia); Al Jazeera (Middle East).  Meanwhile taking the video a rights for the property are: Mediaway (Poland); Europa Records (Hungary); CLMC (Portugal).  The Magic Round About is co-produced by Films Action, Action Synthese, Play Productions, Ellipsanime, with the participation of M6 and Disney.  Mediatoon holds the TV and video rights worldwide.

NetDragon Websoft, a developer and operator of online games in China, and The Walt Disney Company’s Interactive Media Group unveiled plans to launch their first Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG), Disney Fantasy Online, in spring 2009.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Toei Animation Co. appoints The Licensing Company Germany as the merchandising broker for Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT.  Under the deal The Licensing Company Germany will handle the Dragon Ball series (which includes some 508 episodes) across Germany, Austria, and German speaking Switzerland. The Licensing Company will also hold all merchandising rights for the brand with the exception of toy, video game, publishing and Lamincards categories

Atari acquires the North America publishing rights to the videogame The Tale of Despereaux, based on Universal‘s animated feature film (December 19), per Variety.  Brash Entertainment was to release its version of the game, but went out of business last month.  Additionally, Brash was to have distributed a Nintendo DS version of the game, the first videogame produced by Universal.  Under the deal Atari takes the North America publishing rights for the Wii, PlayStation 2 and PC, as well as taking on distribution of Universal’s Nintendo DS game.  Universal and Brash continue to search for a publishing partner to release the game overseas.  The Tale of Despereaux is based on author Kate DiCamillo’s (Because of Winn-Dixie, Mercy Watson, among others) book of the same name.

Toy Island and Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) enter into a multi-year pact to create a line of wood play sets and toys based on several Nick Jr. series including: The Wonder Pets!; Go, Diego, Go; Dora the Explorer; The Backyardigans; and Ni Hao, Kai-lan.  Featured items will debut in specialty stores worldwide in 2009.
