Spike TV renewed its original series Auction Hunters for a 20-episode second season, though a premiere date has not been announced.  Since the series premiered on November 9, it has averaged 1.1 million viewers each week. The first season finale will air on December 21.

Comedy Central will premiere its 30m sports news series Onion SportsDome on January 11 at 1030p following the season three bow of Tosh.0. Onion SportsDome is the main show of the Onion Sports Network and part of The Onion. Mark Shepard and Alex Reiser will co-anchor the Comedy Central show and will be joined by the “Dome” crew including senior sports insider Reggie Greengrass, update anchor Melissa Wells, “Wish Zone” host Jay Woodworth, analyst Doc Webb and investigative reporter Marc Howell.

Discovery Channel delves into the world of historic weapons when it premieres Sons of Guns on January 12 at 10p. The series follows gunsmith and historian Will Hayden, the owner of a Baton Rouge shop and his eclectic associates as they create one-of-a-kind custom weapons. Sons of Guns is produced by Jupiter Entertainment for Discovery Channel.

Talk show host and designer Nate Berkus was taken to the hospital on Tuesday after appearing on NBC’s Today. It was discovered Berkus had appendicitis and was to undergo surgery. Scheduled tapings of his syndicated The Nate Berkus Show will be postponed until after he recovers. Doctors say Berkus will likely have a speedy recovery.

Last Sunday’s new series launch of Wild Justice on National Geographic Channel now ranks as the highest-rated series premiere in the network’s history. The opening preview episode at 9p and the airing at 10p averaged a 0.9 rating among A25-54 and drew in 2.1 million total viewers.

PBS’ Masterpiece Classic will premiere the popular British miniseries Downton Abbey beginning January 9 at 9p (check local listings) airing Sundays through January 30. Downton Abbey was created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) and stars Dame Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern. Laura Linney hosts Masterpiece Classic.

Maryland Public Television (MPT) is bringing forth second seasons of two AARP-produced series, the lifestyle series My Generation and the public affairs program Inside E Street. Leeza Gibbons will host the half-hour My Generation focusing on health, money, relationships and volunteering and more. Journalist Lark McCarthy will host Inside E Street, another half-hour program examining issues involving the economy, health care, job security and retirement. AARP produces both series with 26 episodes each in association with MPT, targeting the 50+ audience. Syndication of both series to PBS stations begins in late January with distribution handled by the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA).

Nielsen will enable its Inactive ID Suspension Policy affecting Nielsen Answers users. Beginning December 31, 2010, Nielsen Answers user IDs that have been inactive for 90+ days will be suspended. As of yesterday, Nielsen Answers sent an email notice informing those users directly of this policy. Nielsen Answers is the conduit for Nielsen web-based products, systems and services. Taking out the inactive IDs will keep other users’ data more secure and current, per Nielsen.

Veteran television producer and syndicator, Al Masini died on Monday in Hawaii where he lived. He was 80 years old. Mr. Masini created such iconic and popular television series as Entertainment Tonight, Star Search, Solid Gold, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and numerous others. Mr. Masini was described in his obituary as a “simple person, remembered for his unassuming demeanor and deals sealed with a handshake.” His longtime friend Carol Burnett said of his passing, Mr. Masini was “a talented producer and a fine man.” Mr. Masini is survived by his wife Charlyn Honda Masini and one sister.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Entertainment Studios, Inc.’s Who Wants to Date a Comedian? is a firm go for Fall 2011.. The new competition dating show with a comedy twist will debut as a daily, half-hour strip in syndication as well as on Entertainment Studio’s cable network Comedy.TV. The premise has dating contestants vying to win the affection of a standup comedian. Who Wants to Date a Comedian? is produced and distributed by Entertainment Studios.

Tribune Broadcasting is ready to debut the new digital multicast network, Antenna TV at midnight on January 1 with programming featuring more than 24 hours of The Three Stooges and a Benny Hill marathon on January 2. Antenna TV’s regular programming will kick in January 3 with a mixture of movies and classic TV shows like All in the Family, Sanford and Son, The Nanny, Married with Children, The Partridge Family and more. Gary Owens serves as the voice of the channel. Antenna TV will air on the digital channels of 19 Tribune Broadcasting stations across the country. Antenna TV has other clearances on 13 LocalTV LLC affiliates and other stations with all representing more than 50 million US households.

KOCE-TV will open the New Year January 1 as the new full-service PBS station serving the Southern California area, broadcasting PBS programs for Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties as well as the city of Santa Barbara. KOCE-TV will air familiar PBS news and public affairs, drama and performing arts programs such as PBS NewsHour, Frontline, Nova, Masterpiece, Nature and more as well as seven hours of PBS Kids programming each weekday.

Liberman Broadcasting, Inc. (LBI Media) made an affiliate deal in California for its EstrellaTV. Effective immediately, KMBY-TV, owned by Cocola Broadcasting Companies, LLC, will broadcast EstrellaTV for the Monterey-Salinas market, the 34th largest US Hispanic TV market covering 68,800 Hispanic TV households. Following this affiliate pick-up, EstrellaTV broadcasts in 37 markets across the country and reaches more than 77% of the US Hispanic households.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC has a comedy in the works highlighting the plethora of gourmet food trucks in Los Angeles. Comedian Al Madrigal will star in the sitcom tentatively titled Family Owned about a multiethnic, multigenerational family who owns a food truck business. Tony Gama-Lobo and Rebecca May, who both worked on King of the Hill, created the show and will serve as executive producers along with Warren Littlefield. ABC Studios will produce.

US-based production business The Angel City Factory picked up the rights to option the Asian game show format, The Fan  Fan Pan Tae. The deal was brokered by Small World IFT along with partners Smoke and Mirrors. The Fan  Fan Pan Tae is produced in Thailand by Workpoint Entertainment and has aired for nine years with 444 episodes. The show has additionally won copious awards for best game show from the Asian Television Awards, Star Entertainment Awards and Thailand’s Top Awards.

Monday  A18-49 Analysis:   CBS won with a lineup of all repeats Monday night at 2.3/6 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS’ comedies How I Met Your Mother and Rules of Engagement in reruns averaged a top-rated 2.3/6 with NBC’s Chuck next at 2.0/6. CBS remained in first with its encore comedies Two and a Half Men and Mike & Molly averaging a 2.6/7 while FOX’s Lie To Me and UNIV’s Soy Tu Duena both shared second place at 2.2/6 each. Then at 10p, CBS continued to hold the top spot with a rebroadcast of Hawaii Five-O at 1.9/5 and NBC’s Chase was #2 at 1.6/4.

Tuesday  A18-49 Analysis: CBS shined at #1 Tuesday night with a 3.4/9 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. Glee on FOX hit the right note at 8p with 4.6/13 and the perennial holiday favorite Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer on CBS was #2 at 3.9/11. CBS was first during 9p with a NCIS repeat at 3.0/8 though NBC’s The Biggest Loser was a tenth of a rating point behind at 2.9/8. CBS then sashayed to #1 at 10p with the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show at 3.4/9 and NBC’s The Biggest Loser held steady in second with 2.9/8.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Canada’s CTV announced Robert Hurst, President /CTV News and Current Affairs, will be soon be leaving the company though will remain with CTV News until his replacement is named in the next several weeks.

Producer Louise Clark has established a new production venture named Lark Productions in Vancouver and will serve as President. In addition, Erin Haskett was tapped as VP/Development. The new entity will develop scripted and non-scripted content for Canadian and international markets.

Veria TV named Gabriella Messina as Head/Programming, effective immediately. Gabriella will report to Hal Rosenberg, GM and her responsibilities include overseeing the strategic development and acquisition of original TV content for the company’s TV network and website. Previously, Gabriella was Executive Producer/Digital Video at Scripps Networks.

Longtime recruiter Carrie Pryor is taking the helm of the new venture Greenwich Harbor Partners based in New York City. The goal of her new company is to target executives in the areas of entertainment, media and technology.



This day in History:
   2001 – Enron Corp. filed for Chapter 11 reorganization. The filing came five days after Dynegy walked away from a $8.4 billion buyout. It was the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history.
