Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 2, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Walden Media is looking to breathe new life into the Benji, the dog, movies, by teaming up with Brandon Camp, son of Benji’s creator Joe Camp Jr., who will write, direct and produce a new family-targeted Benji movie, per Variety.  The younger Camp will be on the prowl for a new dog to play Benji, which he would like to be a stray dog not unlike the original dog that played Benji on the big screen.  Brandon Camp hopes to partner with a rescue dog group to find the new star.  In 2009 Walden Media signed Brandon Camp to direct its upcoming family-targeted movie Relativity.  The younger Camp holds and manages the rights to Benji for his family.


Nickelodeon will take a look at kids living with service dogs in the new Nick News with Linda Ellerbee special, Good Dog, premiering Sunday, December 5 at 9p.  The program will introduce kids and meet their service dogs and all explore the things these dogs are capable of providing to those they work with and what it takes to train them. Service dogs often act as the eyes, hands, legs of people who need their help, turning on lights, opening doors and signaling a food that could cause an allergic reaction, as well as helping calm them down.

The new wild animal and science mixed live-action/2D animated series Wild Kratts, (40×30) featuring zoologist brothers Chris and Martin Kratt, will launch in the US on PBS Kids Go! on Monday, January 3, 2011 (check local listings) and in Ontario on TVO‘s TVOKids on Tuesday, January 11, where the series will air Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 6:30p and Saturdays at 3p.  Wild Kratt is a co-production between creators the Kratt Brothers Company and 9 Story Entertainment, in association with TVO.  9 Story distributes the series internationally.

TVOKids‘s (Ontario) will also launch The Prime Radicals, a new live-action, math-centric series for kids in second and third grade, on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 3:30p.  Produced by GPAC Entertainment in association with TVO, The Prime Radicals will air regularly Saturdays at 3:30p and Sundays at 12:30p.  Additionally, TVOKids Family Movie block, Sundays at 2p, for January 2011, beginning January 16 will include: Harriet the Spy (1996); The Secret Garden (1994); and Snow White (1987).

American Greetings Properties (AGP) names Extend Brands as the licensing agent for its Holly Hobbie property in India.  An independent licensing and merchandising company, Extend Brands represents 40+ international and domestic brands across India.  Extend Brands believes that the property will do well there because Holly Hobbie represents values similar to those in India, including love and respect of family and home and qualities such as tenderness and friendship.

Universal Music UK releases the first DVD for its new preschool property Uki (52×5).  Uki  Volume One is comprised of 10 episodes of the series.  First developed by Universal Music Belgium, Uki was the winner of Pitch It at the 2008 KidScreen Summit.  Each episode of the non-verbal short-form series features Uki taking toddler viewers on an adventure.  The Uki licensing program will also see publisher Egmont launch a series of Uki books in the UK, including 10 Minute Tales, Pocket Library books, annuals, coloring/activity books and story books.


Saban Brands expands its marketing and licensing team with the appointment of Amber Sheppo as Director/International Marketing & Licensing.  Sheppo is charged with growing the international business for current and future Saban Brands properties, including Power Rangers and Paul Frank.  Sheppo joins the company from Cookie Jar Entertainment where she has been for the last five years, most recently as Director/Marketing.  She previously served at Nelvana as a Director/Development and Sales Executive, and prior to that at Kids’ WB!


November 2010 delivers Disney XD most-watched November ever for the network in Primetime and Total Day with kid and boy demos.

  • For Total Day in November 2010, the network drew Kids 6-11 (117,000), Boys 6-11 (76,000), Tweens 9-14 (84,000) and Boys 9-14 (55,000).
  • In Primetime Disney XD was watched by Kids 6-11 (153,000), Boys 6-11 (104,000), Tweens 9-14 (117,000) and Boys 9-14 (80,000)

The Hub‘s holiday programming the week of November 22-28 delivers increases among K2-11 and K6-11 demos.  The network’s sneak preview block of its new series Transformers Prime and G.I. Joe Renegades on Friday, November 26, 3:30-7p, increased over the previous week with K2-11 (62,000) by +130% and K6-11 (32,000) by +78%.  More specifically, the day’s back-to-back episodes of Transformers Prime, 6-7p, were up over the prior week among K2-11 (90,000) by +102% and K6-11 (49,000), as well as against the time period the prior four weeks with K2-11 and K6-11 +219% and +140, respectively.
