Cynopsis: Kids!
12/01/11
Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 1, 2011, and this your first early morning briefing.
Kids in Afghanistan get their own version of Sesame Street today with the launch of Baghch-e-Simsim (26×30) today, December 1, 2011. Produced by Sesame Workshop in partnership with TOLO TV and LEMAR TV stations, and in consultation with Afghanistan’s Ministry of Education, Baghch-e-Simsim will broadcast in both Dari and Pashto languages on TOLO TV Thursday through Sunday at 4p, and on LEMAR TV on Thursdays and Fridays at 5p and Saturdays and Sundays at 3:30p. Baghch-e-Simsim, which translates as Sesame Garden, includes 13 locally produced live-action films (2-3 minutes each) featuring traditions, culture and other aspects of what daily life is like for young kids across Afghanistan. Sesame Street Muppets including Elmo, Big Bird and Grover will also be featured in the series, as will Sesame Muppet characters from co-productions around the world such as Egypt, Bangladesh, Mexico and Russia. There are upwards of five million kids under the age of five in Afghanistan, and only a fraction of those are served by the country’s kindergarten system.
Marblemedia and Seven24 Films are partnering to develop Dark Horse, a new teen-targeted multiplatform property for YTV (Canada). A live-action coming-of-age drama, Dark Horse will include 13×60 episodes, an online world and mobile interactive elements. Showrunners Shelley Scarrow (Instant Star) and James Hurst (Degrassi: The Next Generation) have also joined the project. Dark Horse revolves around Lyla, the daughter of rancher who becomes involved with Micah, an outsider who also happens to be able to shape-shift into a wild horse. Distribution360 will handle international sales and distribution for Dark Horse.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products and ScrollMotion Kids, part of digital publisher ScrollMotion, release the first DC Super Friends interactive storybook app for iPad, DC Super Friends: Race to Save Christmas. This interactive reader app features tappable puzzles, digital coloring pages, sticker activities (kids can create their own DC Super Friends stickers), and hidden DC Super Friends Points that users can collect to receive an in-app reward (an exclusive emailable holiday postcard). The app also includes professional narration, sound effects, word highlighting, and record-your-own audio options. Additionally, kids can use multi-touch to grow, shrink, and spin the characters, and can also save and share their creations.

CBeebies, the BBC’s preschool channel, expands the reach of its website, to make it available to the US Hispanic market. The initiative is part of a strategy to offer preschoolers and parents/caregivers a more entertaining and interactive experience with additional information and activities directly related to the channel’s programming. Set in an underwater environment, CBeebies.com main navigational tool is a submarine that features video content and activities. The site also features Rose, the channel’s host, as well as games and other activities such as Crea y Colorea (Create and Color), Ver y Escuchar (Look and Listen), and Tiempo de Canciones (Music Time), the latter featuring songs from series including El Jardín de los Suenos, Roly Mo and Las Aventuras de Wibbly. There is also an at adult targeted section that offers educational articles about the channel’s programming and the benefits of the various activities offered.
