Now your kids will have something to read aimed at them when they wrest your iPad or NOOKcolor away from you. HarperCollins Children’s Books is releasing more than 30 of its classic color picture books for digital platforms including Fancy Nancy, Splat the Cat, and Marley. The titles are among the first children’s picture books to be offered on Apple’s iBook store. Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing has also gotten into the ePublishing line with a variety of electronic titles including a selection of the Oliva picture books, for viewing on the iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone or via the NOOKcolor by Barnes & Noble.

USA Network is partnering with social media start-up GetGlue to integrate its social entertainment check-in service with USA Network’s loyalty rewards program, Club PSYCH. The program rewards users for watching videos, sharing and retweeting specific content with points that can be redeemed for virtual and real world goods.
 
Buoyed by its popular simultaneous Oxygen Live viewing platform, Oxygen Media announced double and triple digit increases across digital metrics including unique users (+62%,) ave. monthly uniques (+250%) and video streams (+111%) YTD, per Omniture.
 
CBSSports.com
and CBS Mobile has once again secured the rights to stream more than 20 NCAA college basketball games from the Big East, Big Ten and SEC conferences, giving users the ability to access in-game statistics as well as track college basketball scores and standings from around the country. New this year is ability to “check in” during live NCAA games.
 
Univision Interactive Media launched its financial-themed Dinero site on Univision.com, available at online and via mobile. The site consists of news and resources on employment, personal finance, small business management and real estate targeted toward U.S. Hispanics.

Contextual online content syndication platform Mochila closed on an unspecified series E round of financing led by Mission Ventures, The Greenspun Corp. and Jerry Colonna.
 
Mobile social game developer Pocket Gems, creator of iPhone games such as Tap Farm, Tap Store and Tap Jungle, has secured a $5 million round of funding led by Sequoia Capital.

Apple
unveiled a high-budget commercial for the iPad interactive iAd platform – a video-based promo of Disney‘s “ Tron: Legacy” release. The movie’s iAd package, which features trailers, images and extras and allows viewers to send tweets and emails from inside the ad, heralds a broader roll-out of the platform next year.
 
Meredith Corp.
announced the launch of the women-targeted Meredith Video Network, based on established magazine brands including Parents, Family Circle, More and Fitness. Video content will be accessible from direct channel sites linked to each magazine, with users having the ability to search, build playlists, customize their own channel page or share via social networks.
 
Online video ad network SpotXchange, currently ranked #3 in the U.S. according to ComScore, has closed on a $12 million round of funding backed by H.I.G. Growth Partners. The company will use the funding to expand its auction-based platform both in the U.S. and abroad.

 
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
 

YouTube is in talks to acquire web video producer Next New Networks in what would be its first major content acquisition, reports the NYTimes. NNN has raised $26 million in venture capital to date from Spark Capital, Fuse Capital and Goldman Sachs and recently celebrated its one-billion-view mark.
 
Leading electronics retailer Best Buy took it on the chin with lower-than-expected earnings during Q3, with sales at existing stores down 5% y/y. Slow sales of newer lines such as 3D and web-connected TVs are partly to blame, according to the retailer.

Game consoles are quickly becoming entertainment hubs in households that enjoy broadband access, according to an upcoming Nielsen Gaming Report. Nearly half of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 users say they play games online, but Microsoft’s Xbox platform leads in terms of online play and watching on demand video via a subscription service. Sony’s PS3 leads in actively using the console’s browser for surfing the net, social networking or watching online video.

Following up on the launch of its TV Check service, TV Guide.com has now added a Movie Check-in service accessible by clicking “I’ll Watch” buttons throughout the site, including over 40,000 movies fan pages featuring reviews, trailers, DVDs, on demand and TV listings.
 
A new software update to ESPN’s app on Xbox LIVE will enable fans to play the ESPN3.com College Bowl Showdown pick ’em game against other friends on the Xbox 360 console.  Users predict who will win each game, earn points for correct predictions and compete against friends to determine a winner.
 
CBS News
announced the launch of an iPhone and iPod Touch app based on its Sunday Morning news program. Developed by CBS Mobile, app features video segments and clips about current events and stories about fine art, music, nature, sports, science and Americana, along with kitschy “postcards” from destinations around the world.

Mike McCue and David Rosenblatt have joined Twitter‘s Board of Directors. Mike was the CEO of Tellme Networks, and currently serves as CEO at Flipboard. David is the former CEO of DoubleClick and an ex-Google executive.
 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
The year 2010 has been another banner year for microblogging darling Twitter (175 million registered users and counting) and the company has announced yet another round funding valuing the start-up at $3.7 billion. The company has now raised $360 million from various deep-pocketed VC firms, but there are those who are still waiting for a credible business model to emerge around the excitement. Remaking Twitter as a B2B platform is one approach. The company unveiled a revamped version of its Business Center site featuring tips and tools to help businesses follow their customers and spread good marketing cheer on the site. Short of a self-serve ad portal for small businesses promised for next year, Promoted Products, Trends, Accounts and Tweets are all up for sale, the latter which will appear on top of users’ Twitter feeds when they search Twitter or are using third party apps such as TweetDeck. Promoted Trends, which appear on the site‘s list of Trending Topics, sell for as high as $100,000/day.
