Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 14, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
The European Parliament yesterday gave its support for the newly-proposed revamping of TV advertising standards, last updated in 1997, which would make product placement legal throughout Europe. Additionally, the European Parliament voted in favor of limiting commercial breaks to one every 30 minutes during kid’s programs, news shows, and made-for-TV movies, feature films. As for the product placement, the proposed guidelines for the new amendment are:
- No product placement within kid’s, news/current affairs and documentary programming.
- For programming where product placement is used, broadcasters need to alert viewers that product placement was contained in the program prior to its broadcast and then remind the audience every 20 minutes.
- The use of tobacco and alcohol product placement is forbidden.
- “Product integration” – described as when a specific brand is used as part of the storyline versus a prop – is prohibited.
Nintendo’s Wii video game console has taken over as the fastest selling game console ever across Europe and the UK. Nintendo reports that in the first two days that the new console was available this weekend in Europe and the UK, sales totaled 325,000 and 105,000 respectively. It was a good news for Nintendo in Europe overall last week as its Nintendo DS set new sales records, with 515,000 DS units sold, the most in one week since the DS was launched there in March 2006 as well as the best selling week for any game console.

VOOM HD Networks‘ Family Room HD, a family-focused movie and entertainment channel, announced two new original 13×30 series, Totally Frank and Maddigan’s Quest, set to premiere in January 2007. The former, acquired from the UK’s Channel 4 International, is a teen drama series that chronicles the lives of four headstrong girls as they go through the process of forming a band. Maddigan’s Quest, purchased from ALL3MEDIA International, is a tween adventure series that follows the cast as they set out on a quest to save their home from ruin and their future from evil. It was produced in New Zealand by South Pacific Pictures.
The animated Jetix Europe series, Oban Star Racers, will launch on UK terrestrial TV network GMTV in 2007, following an agreement with Buena Vista International Television. The 26 x 30′ series chronicles the Great Race of Oban, an intergalactic competition that takes place every 10,000 years to determine the winner of a mysterious Ultimate Prize and the balance of power within the Galaxy. Oban Star Racers is a mix of Japanese anime with western design and 3D CGI and 2D animation. It is a co-production between Jetix Europe, France’s Sav! The World Production, France 3, Super RTL, Bandai Visual, and Hal Film Maker. This was the first time a Jetix Europe co-production had involved a Japanese partner.
Anime Network has signed linear carriage deals with Puerto Rican cable providers One Link and Liberty Cablevision (as of January 21, 2007). These deals, which represent more than two-thirds of the island, will bring in 178,000 new subscribers. The channel has secured additional 24/7 linear deals in Missouri, Texas, Florida and Wisconsin, with launches on Longview, Optical Entertainment Network (January 2007), Home Town Cable (December 15) and Community Antenna (December 15), respectively.
Joining the Nickelodeon’s programming line-up in India this month is Go, Diego, Go! and Perman.
- A Nick Jr. original animated preschool spin-off series of Dora: The Explorer, Go, Diego, Go will air Sundays (10a).
- Targeted to kids and tweens, Perman is an acquired animated series created by the Japanese team Fukko Fujio, which airs M-F (7p). Perman revolves around the small group including two boys, a girl and a monkey who are selected by the mysterious Super Perman to product their city.
Brighter Minds Media, Inc. and Marvel Entertainment have published two new interactive books for kids, Marvel Super Hero Fact Book and Marvel Mix & Match Storybook. Brighter Minds Media, Inc. is the newly-formed parent company for educational publisher Brighter Child Interactive, LLC and its imprints, including Brighter Minds Children’s Publishing. Brighter Minds Media, Inc.
Mattel and Emerson Radio Corp. have entered into a new licensing deal under which Emerson will produce a line of Barbie Real Electronics designed for girls 4-8. Mattel and Emerson will launch the new line at the International Consumer Electronics Show in January 2007. Slated to be available in spring 2007, the Barbie Real Electronics line will include the Tune Blossom (CD player), the Hour Garden (talking alarm clock/nightlight), Bloombox (portable CD player and 13” TV and matching DVD player). The items also feature a “gemstone fun button” that activate various Barbie themed features.
MTV India’s Cyrus Oshidar has stepped down as SVP/Creative and Content, where for the last 10 years he oversaw and drove the creative vision across MTV India’s MTV, Nickelodeon and VH1 channels. Oshidar will serve as a consultant for Contests2Win, an online contest and entertainment service, as well as joining its board. Oshidar will also maintain a relationship with MTV India as a consultant on individual brand solutions and multi-platform communications projects. MTV has divvied up Oshidar’s responsibilities: Ashish Patil who takes over as VP/Creative & Content and GM, MTV; Nina Jaipuria as VP and GM, Nickelodeon; Keertan Adyanthaya as VP and GM, VH1.
Chris Hendrie has been appointed Head of Acquisitions, DVD and Home Entertainment, FremantleMedia Enterprises. Hendrie is charged with acquiring content specifically for Fremantle Home Entertainment. Working out of the London office, Hendrie will report jointly to Pete Kalhan SVP/Home Entertainment and Archive Sales and Mark Gray, VP/Co-Production and Acquisitions, TV content. Most recently, Hendrie was with Universal Pictures where he acquired UK programming in several genres including TV series, interactive DVDs, kids, music and stand-up comedy.
Access 360 Media, the young adult consumer-focused entertainment network, has added three new executives: Lauren de la Fuente as SVP/Strategic Partnerships and Marketing to create content for young adults via media partnerships and to oversee the positioning of the company; Jeff Elgart as SVP/Advertising Sales to develop revenue strategies across all platforms; and Christopher M. Goumas as VP/Retail Development to increase the company’s partner and retail strategies.
