Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 13, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
It’s been a busy week over at CBS Sports. Following programming announcements in the past week regarding the Super Bowl and March Madness, the company has now inked a deal with Professional Bull Riders to serve as the exclusive television home for the sport. CBS Sports Network will now offer 40 telecasts covering 25 PBR events, including the World Finals from Las Vegas in October. In addition, CBS Sports will increase its PBR coverage as well, showcasing 10 events during the 2013 season for a total that passes 100 hours of coverage between the two outlets. The PBR season starts Jan. 4, 2013 with the Madison Square Garden Invitational in New York.
NFL games ranked as the two most-watched shows on TV for the week of Dec. 3-9, with FOX’s national telecast of the Saints/Giants topping the list with 24.5 million viewers, followed by NBC’s SNF game with 21.4 million, according to Nielsen. Top five markets for their local teams were Milwaukee, with a 52.6/70, followed by New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Denver and Minneapolis.
ESPN revealed that its 2013 matchup between Notre Dame and Michigan would run on prime time on either ESPN or ABC, marking only the second night game at the Big House since the venue opened in 1927. The company also announced that its Saturday Night Football package on ABC ranked as the highest-rated and most-viewed college football series among all networks carrying college football this season, averaging 6,518,000 viewers and a 4.0 Nielsen rating. For the season, ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3 covered 306 regular-season Football Bowl Subdivision games exclusively this year.
NBC Sports Group is bringing in a big gun for the Fight Night series on December 22 at 4p on NBC, announcing that famed ring announcer Michael Buffer will rumble for the event. In addition to serving as ring announcer for the event, Buffer will also act as the voice for NBC’s promotional campaign and tune-in spots leading up to the broadcast. Fight Night shifts from NBC Sports Network for the evening to the broadcast channel, marking the first boxing broadcast in NBC since 2004.
Golf Channel is set to offer two special sessions of Golf Central this morning to cover PGA of America’s announcement of the 2014 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain selection. The first will run at 8a, followed by a 90-minute special at 10a.
Manhattan Place Entertainment tapped Mike McCarthy to the newly created position of Co-Chairman for the company. McCarthy joins after a storied run that most recently included CEO of the St. Louis Blues and Madison Square Garden Networks. He will now help oversee new business development and brand project growth for Manhattan Place.
ONE World Sports Network continues to beef up distribution, inking a deal with Optimum TV for the New York Tri-state area. The network can be found on Optimum TV channel 1159.
The Colonial Athletic Association has some new digs, locking in a three-year deal with the city of Baltimore to host the CAA Men’s Basketball Championship at 1st Mariner Arena starting in 2014. Seven of the CAA’s 10 member schools are located within 250 miles of the city. The CAA Men’s Basketball Championship has been held at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va. since 1990 and the arena will host its final tournament from March 9-11.

A fond farewell to The Sporting News print edition as publishers announced that the magazine will go all-digital starting Jan. 1 after 126 years in business. “Having spoken with many of our longtime subscribers, we recognize this is not a popular decision among our most loyal fans,” said Jeff Price, president and publisher of the magazine and Garry Howard, editor-of-chief, in a joint statement on the website. “Unfortunately, neither our subscriber base nor the current advertising market for print would allow us to operate a profitable print business going forward.”
