Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 20, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nintendo will release its new Nintendo 3DS handheld game system for $250 in the US on March 27, 2011.  The new 3D enabled portable device will be available in Cosmo Black or Aqua Blue, and will feature two screens, the bottom touch screen uses a telescoping stylus that is stored in the unit, and the top screen allows 3D visuals to be seen without special glasses.  The system is also equipped with a 3D Depth Slider that lets players choose the level of 3D they want, including high, moderate or off.  Nintendo plans to release 30+ games for the Nintendo 3DS during the “launch window” – defined as between March 27 and the E3 Expo in early June.  Additionally, the Nintendo 3DS includes two new features, including StreetPass, which (when activated) allows the device to exchange game information with other 3DS users in the vicinity even when in sleep mode, and SpotPass, which can connect to compatible public Wi-Fi hotspots that will allow the 3DS to download new content and updates even if the system is in sleep mode.

Warner Bros. Pictures gets its Catwoman as Anne Hathaway is cast to play Selina Kyle (AKA Catwoman) in director Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.  Hathaway will star opposite Christian Bale, who reprises his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman.  Additionally, Tom Hardy will play Batman foe Bane.  Nolan also penned the screenplay for the movie with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer.  Nolan is also producing the movie with his partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.  Set for release on July 20, 2012, The Dark Knight Rises will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.


4Kids Entertainment and Nihon Ad Systems team with Cinedigm Digital Cinema to release the North American version of the 3D animated movie Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D: Bonds Beyond Time in digital theatres in the US as part of Yu-Gi-Oh’s 10th anniversary.  Cinedigm will release the movie in 250 theatres for two consecutive weekends February 26/27 and March 5/6 (specific theatres TBA).  Unique to the North American version of the movie is a 10-minute back-story about three main characters (Yugi Muto (Yu-Gi-Oh! Classic), Jaden Yuki (Yu-Gi-Oh! GX), and Yusei Fudo (Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s), which features scenes from all three animated series.  Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D: Bonds Beyond Time was created by legendary manga artist Kazuki Takahashi and is the first full-length animated feature film to be drawn by hand and then rendered into 3D for the big screen.  The movie was released in Japan in January 2010.  Fans can find a trailer and updates at (

Disney XD is set to debut Winter Next X, the new season of its Next X action sports short-form series, on Monday, January 31 at 4p.  Shot on location in Aspen, Colorado, the new episodes will air daily throughout the week, culminating in a 15-minute special on Monday, February 7 at 9p.  Shortly thereafter the episodes will be available on  Winter Next X features professional Winter X Games athletes Sarah Burke (skier) and Danny Kass (snowboarder) as they mentor talented amateur kid competitors as they vie for a chance to be featured at the Winter X Games 15.

Imira Entertainment, a Spain-based youth focused production and distribution company, inks a deal with Canada’s Shaftesbury to represent Shaftesbury’s kid and teen programming in Latin America.  Featured under the deal from Shaftesbury’s catalog are the live action series Baxter (13X30), which Imira represents for free TV in Latin America, as well as the series Connor Undercover (39X30) Overruled! (39X30), Life with Derek (70X30) and the made-for-TV movie Vacation with Derek (1X90), which it will represent for free TV in Latin America excluding Mexico. The deal also includes rights to the animated series Mischief City (26×22).

Nickelodeon Latin America has completed pre-sales for Grachi (75×60), its new original telenovela that it recently began production on in Miami.  Comarex, Nickelodeon Latin America’s distribution partner, has sold Grachi to broadcasters in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela.


Doctor Who moves into the construction toy category for the first time as BBC Worldwide enters into a license deal with Character Options‘ new construction division.  The Character Building line will include 3D micro-figures, including sculpted facial features with play sets to be tailored to Doctor Who.  The figures will be based on popular Doctor Who characters including the Doctor and Amy Pond, and their enemies Daleks, Cybermen, and Weeping Angels.  Additionally, the line will feature texture on some of the building blocks, including smooth edges on a spaceship and rough edges for a rock face.  Character Building’s full line will be featured at the Character Options stand at the London Toy Fair, and will be available at retail in spring 2011.


Viacom appoints Robert Bakish to the newly created position of President and CEO/ Viacom International Media Networks.  Bakish, who was previously President/MTV Networks International, will oversee Viacom’s Media Networks properties that operate outside the US, including MTV Networks International, BET Networks’ international channels and non-premium Paramount branded networks.  He will also continue to serve as Chairman/Viacom 18, a joint venture in India, and as a member of the boards of Viacom’s joint ventures with BSkyB and Telecom Italia Media.  Based in NY, Mr. Bakish will report directly to Viacom President and CEO Philippe Dauman.  He will continue to work closely with MTV Networks Chairman and CEO, Judy McGrath, BET Networks Chairman and CEO, Debra Lee, and Paramount Pictures Chairman and CEO, Brad Grey.
