Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08/07/08
Good morning, it’s Thursday, August 6, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Challenging incumbent Baidu.com and the widespread practice of pirating music in the world’s most populous nation, Google launched a search service in China to help connect users with licensed downloadable music. The free service will allow users to search by song title or artist then direct them to downloads on Top100.cn, founded by Chinese basketball star Yao Ming. Google, of course, hopes the service will prove to be a Trojan Horse to help increase its overall search market share. Baidu.com currently controls about 63% of search in China according to iResearch, compared to a 26% share for Google.
To spark buzz for its fall line-up NBC Universal has put together a 30-minute sneak peek to distribute anywhere and everywhere viewers are lurking this summer. Beginning August 30 the NBC Agency-produced special will be offered to all NBC local TV stations for use on air or online as well as to NBCU cable networks. It will also be distributed via NBC2Go, VOD, United Airlines flights and NBC.com.
Granite Broadcasting‘s KBWB-TV in San Francisco is pinging the crowd for programming advice with “Retro Night,” an online initiative asking viewers to log onto yourtv20.com and vote for which retro TV shows they’d like to see on the station. As an added incentive guest hosts will be selected at random each week from the pool of voters to appear on-air.
MySpace unveiled a new voter education partnership called MyDebates to serve as an interactive platform for users to view the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates live, ask questions then view responses on demand. “Issue icons” will light up as candidates discuss specific main topics. Users will be polled periodically throughout the debates with short questions with multiple choice answers or iconic responses, (e.g. thumbs-up/ down). Users can then share, comment on and rate links in the video player. MySpaceTV will host the debate clips which will also be accessible to non-MySpace members.
With Kate Modern done for now, Bebo started up its next big entertainment series. The Secret World of Sam King revolves around a mailroom worker in the Universal Music’s UK offices in West London, who enlists the help of the community to find up and coming talent for a label he wants to start. The Jonas Brothers makes a cameo in the premiere while The Sugababes, The Automatic, Sam Sparro and The Saturdays are scheduled to appear in subsequent episodes. It is the AOL division’s first collaboration with a major music label.
Facebook‘s once optimistic investors are looking to dump their shares of the company at rates far below the $15 billion valuation Microsoft placed on the social networking site when it bought a small share of the company last fall, reports BusinessWeek.
Online music licensing start-up YouLicense.com secured series A funding from Israel-based Ofer Media and Logio Group Ltd. YouLicense launched last year as an online marketplace for writers, publishers and producers to license work in a streamlined fashion.
File sharing company BitTorrent is firing its entire sales and marketing department after it failed to find a buyer for the Torrent Entertainment Network, says Valleywag. BitTorrent CEO Doug Walker, who replaced founder Bram Cohen last fall, is also considering other moves including offering its peer-powered DNA CDN service to customers for no charge.
Call for Content: Emerging musicians are being asked to upload MP3s of their music to a site developed by Complex Media for a chance to win a professionally directed music video of their song. Editors of Smash.com will select 10 finalists then users will pick the ultimate winner. Motorola’s Rokr music phone is sponsoring.
To watch trailers of the latest theatrical releases on your phone check out mobile wap site mpviews.com. It aggregates movie, TV, DVD and video game trailers for streaming and enables mobile movie ticket purchasing, opt-in SMS alerts, polling and sharing with friends. The clips play across AT&T, VZW and Sprint 3G phones.
Looking for pooch? Discovery’s Petfinder.com launched a wap site at m.petfinder.com allowing visitors to search more than 280,000 adoptable pets from over 11,600 shelters and rescue groups from the palm of their hand.

Time Warner announced plans to split AOL into two separate businesses (dial-up and advertising) as early as next year in an earnings call that attributed lower quarterly profit to slow sales at AOL. Revenue fell 16% at the AOL division as dial-up subscriptions dropped by 2.8 million during the past year to 8.1 million total subs.
Cisco announced its Internet Protocol video network infrastructure and encoding solutions will power NBC Universal’s multiplatform coverage of the Beijing Games. The company says it was able to tackle the several technical challenges encountered in preparing to stream 2,200 hours of live coverage, including:
Creating a high-bandwidth connection between Beijing and New York & LA
Providing quality of service required to assign priority to Olympics footage
Encoding low-res video for broadband outlets
Publicis Groupe agreed to acquire the Performics search marketing business from Google. Chicago-based Performics helps to improve the performance of advertisers’ investments and maximize client campaign effectiveness through its reporting platform, local platform, advanced market expertise and active account management. If the deal is approved, Performics will be integrated into Publicis’ new VivaKi Nerve Center, headed by Curt Hecht.

Funny or Die hired Saturday Night Live writer Andrew Steele to serve as Creative Director, reported Variety. Andrew will oversee development and production of programming including fare to be produced with new partner HBO.
Lori Wallace was named VP/Advertising Sales Marketing for multiplatform network ReelzChannel. She will be based in the company’s New York City offices and report to Amy Jo Wayne, SVP/Advertising Sales.
Former Hulu.com licensing executive Michael Romoff has joined IDG as VP/Syndication for Framingham, MA-based IDG Communications. In this new position, Michael is responsible for developing and implementing online content syndication partnerships to distribute technology news and information to digital media companies. IDG Media include CIO, Computerworld, InfoWorld/TecWorld/TecChannel, Network World, Macworld, and PC World along with the IDG News Service.
City Lights Television has upped Christopher Stout to SVP/Digital and Television Production. He will expand his duties to oversee all of City Lights TV and Digital productions. Chris reports to City Lights Television President Dave Noll.
While Paris Hilton’s response video to “that white haired dude” reminds online audiences Funny or Die still has plenty of pull with celebrities, a more serious Johnny-come-lately political site continues to raise its profile in and out of the beltway. In just 18 months Politico.com has grown its audience to about 2.5 million average monthly uniques according to Nielsen Online – better than all but 13 nationwide newspaper sites. Although it does publish a free thrice-weekly print edition, Politico is gaining ground on its well-established competitors by running a relatively lean and mean web driven organization. The company is spending most of its resources on name journalists and their travel expenses. (An astounding 60 of Politico’s 80 or so employees work on the editorial side from web production to reporters, according to Executive Editor/Co-founder Jim VandeHei.) The site’s interface is relatively basic, offering much less video than a CNN.com or washingtonpost.com, despite initial plans to send reporters out with video cameras to cover their beats web 2.0-style. (Producing quality video is not as easy as it might look, said VandeHei.) Apparently low tech doesn’t bother political junkies, though. The group found out soon enough that breaking news early and often moved the needle more than anything else.
