Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 5, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Little Airplane Productions and Spin Master Entertainment will launch their new preschool property Suzy Takes the Stage (52×11) this fall at MipJunior.  The series revolves around Suzy, a young confident and tenacious girl, who works hard to learn and help others around her through daily and regular events (e.g. learning to ice skate, getting her brother ready for preschool) with determination, humor and music.  Suzy Takes the Stage is a mix of computer animation combined with elements of theatrical stagecraft (e.g. trap doors, sets, lighting effects).  The series features Theatre Arts Animation, a new style of animation developed by Little Airplane for the project. Each episode includes original songs and features a curriculum underlining developmental skills including resilience and self-knowledge.


Kurt Russell takes on the role of head high school football coach as he joins the cast of Freedom FilmsTouchback, which begins shooting this week in Michigan.  Written/directed by Don Handfield, the movie also stars Brian Presley (Home of the Brave), Melanie Lynskey (Up in the Air, The Informant) and Christine Lahti (Obsessed, Smart People).  The movie also features Marc Blucas (Knight and Day, The Jane Austin Book Club), Drew Powell (Straw Dogs, 1408), Sarah Wright (The House Bunny), Sianoa Smit-McPhee (Hung) and Covais (College, Labor Pains).  Serving as football coordinator is Sports Studio’s Mark Ellis, who has worked on movies including We Are Marshal, Invincible, The Rookie, The Longest Yard and Miracle.  Presley is producing the film with Lisa Kearns of Freedom Films, Kevin Matusow, Carissa Buffel-Matusow, and George Furla.  Touchback is the first movie of a three picture deal between Freedom Films and backer Palo Verde, a hedge fund founded by Paul Ross & Tony Stacy.

Disney Channel begins production in New Mexico on its new original TV music-driven movie Lemonade Mouth.  Directed by Patricia Riggen, Lemonade Mouth is based on the young adult novel of the same name by Mark Peter Hughes and features a script by April Blair.  Slated to premiere in 2011, Lemonade Mouth stars Bridgit Mendler (Good Luck Charlie), Adam Hicks (Zeke and Luther), Hayley Kiyoko (Wizards of Waverly Place) Naomi Scott (Life Bites), as well as Blake Michael, Nick Roux, Chris Brochu, Tisha Campbell-Martin (My Wife and Kids) and Christopher McDonald (Family Law).  The Lemonade Mouth soundtrack will include nine original songs by a range of artists.  The movie is a production of GWAVE Productions and executive produced by Debra Martin Chase (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Cheetah Girls movies) and choreographed by Chris Scott.

Movie studios are shifting release dates on the heels of Entertainment’s announcement yesterday that it will release Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn  Part 2 on November 16, 2012.  Disney-Pixar moves the release date of its feature Monsters, Inc. 2 up two weeks to November 2 from November 16, 2012, and at the same time DreamWorks Animation shifts The Guardians release back a few weeks from November 2 to November 21, 2012, per Box Office Mojo.  Additionally, Disney has taken Beauty and the Beast 3D and Disney-Pixar’s newt off its release schedule, which had been set for 2011 and summer 2012 respectively, and added the high school-centric Prom for April 29, 2011.  Meanwhile, Heat Vision reports that Beauty and the Beast 3D is just delayed until 2012 or later in order to give 3D TVs time to make their way into households.


Fox and Ustream, live interactive broadcast platform, are partnering for the Teen Choice 2010 red carpet special live webcast this Sunday, August 8 (6:30-8p) at tv/teenchoiceawards/v3 ( and ( ).  The webcast will be hosted by Michael Buckley, of the online What The Buck Show, and will cover the celebrity arrivals at the taping of this year’s Teen Choice Awards.  The red carpet special will re-webcast on Monday, August 9 (6:30-8p) just ahead of the Teen Choice Awards.  Hosted this year by Katy Perry and the guys of Glee, the 12th annual Teen Choice Awards will air Monday, August 9 (8-10p) on Fox. Disney Channel inks a new license deal with Ludorum for a second season of the CGI-animated series of Chuggington for its Playhouse Disney programming block in the US.  Comprised of 13×30, the season two of Chuggington will debut on Playhouse Disney in January 2010, where season one (26×30) currently airs seven days a week.

D3Publisher (D3P) enters into a global licensing pact with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for Yogi Bear: The Video Game.  The game title is set to release for Wii and Nintendo DS worldwide for holiday 2010 simultaneous to Warner Bros.’ release of the new mixed live-action and CG animated 3D feature film Yogi Bear (December 17, 2010) directed by Eric Brevig.  The movie and the game feature the Dan Aykroyd as the voice of Yogi.  Monkey Bar Games is developing Yogi Bear: The Video Game.  Hanna-Barbera Production created Yogi Bear.

Marvel Entertainment expands its licensing deal with DecoPac to develop and launch a line of edible images that can be used to decorate pizza.  The first products in the line will feature classic Spider-Man, followed by products based on Marvel characters and brands such as Super Hero Squad, Marvel Heroes, Wolverine and Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger movies.  The new line will begin rolling out this November 2010 at grocery chains, price clubs, pizzerias (non-chain), party and craft stores and other mass retailers.  Under its existing deal DecoPac has the rights to market cake decorating products featuring Marvel’s Super Hero franchises.

In its first-ever licensing deal American Licorice Company inks a deal with JEM Sportswear for a line of kid’s, women’s and men’s apparel featuring logos and graphics from its candy brands including Red Vines, Sour Punch, Extinguisher, Snaps and Super Ropes products. Dentsu America, the branding and ad agency that helped American Licorice Company develop an integrated business initiative, put the deal together in conjunction with licensing agent Character Vision.


Sprout restructures its marketing department, which includes upping Jim Multari to VP/Marketing & Research and Jenni Glenn to VP/Communications and Marketing.  Multari expands his role to include consumer, affiliate and ad sales marketing to his existing responsibilities. Glenn adds cause marketing, social media and parent-directed messaging on to her duties.  Both Multari and Glenn will report to President, Sandy Wax. Congrats!
