Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 28, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Olympic multiple-gold medalist Michael Phelps has been tapped to host the season opening of Saturday Night Live on September 13.  Musical guest is Lil Wayne.  The same sort of on-TV notoriety befell Mark Spitz after winning his seven gold medals, and it didn’t work out well.  Hopefully, Phelps will well surpass Spitz in this arena, as he did in the swimming pool.

The dozen one-minute profiles are shot in hi-def and will air as interstitials on the linear network and via sundancechannel.com during the next month.

Results from night two of the Democratic National Convention per Nielsen as reported by Variety include total viewer numbers from Tuesday night’s broadcast and cable coverage at 10-11p.  The big draw on Tuesday was a speech by Senator Hillary Clinton: NBC 5.98 million, CNN 4.8 million, ABC 4.76 million, CBS 3.82 million, Fox News 3.48 million and MSNBC 2.57 million. Also per Nielsen, the combined total viewer number during 10p from eight networks offering live coverage  ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, BET and TV One was 25.97 million, up nearly 4 million from the previous night. The combined total among A18-49 viewers was up by a full 1 million to 8.6 million. PBS also reached an average of 2.7 million total viewers from night two where they provided coverage during all of primetime.

ABC Family premiered season two of its collegiate series Greek at 9p and drew in 841,000 Females 12-34, 1.2 million P12-34 and 1.6 million total viewers.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC approved a put pilot order for an untitled family comedy from writers Steven Levitan and Chris Lloyd, the team behind Frasier, Wings and last year’s Back to You. The single-camera comedy, shot docu-style, will focus on three families living in the same suburb from the perspective of a Dutch filmmaker who is back in the U.S. after living as an exchange student with one of the characters many years previously. 20th Century Fox Television is producing and ABC will likely go straight to pilot based on early casting and shooting.

NBC moved ahead and ordered nine additional episodes of Chuck for its second season. In addition, NBC gave a nod for a fourth season of America’s Got Talent. From Warner Bros. Television, Chuck is scheduled to premiere new episodes September 29, while America’s Got Talent, from FremantleMedia North America and Simon Cowell’s company Syco will end its current run October 1.

RSN Resort TV tapped Tina Dixon, snowboarder and TV personality, to co-host the winter episodes of RSN Outdoors, the network’s morning show.

Casting Call: Brides Night Out, a bachelorette party planning company, is casting for a television pilot featuring a soon-to-be-married bride and her girlfriend stories. The casting call dubbed “Project Adjustment: Bachelorette to Bride” wants engaged brides to submit single girlfriend stories starting September 1 at www.myspace.com/bridesnightout and www.bridesnightout.com . A winning story will be selected September 12 and the bride will win a deluxe bachelorette party and be in the television pilot. Participants must be engaged, at least 21 years old and live in the Southern California area at the time of the party. The pilot will be shot in the Los Angeles area this fall, produced by Brides Night Out, Inc. in collaboration with Story House Productions.

Casting Call: For a special airing this December, NBC is looking for funny family videos surrounding the holidays: Chanukah, Christmas and New Year’s. Submit memorable family videos or for more information contact Gina Gonzalez at
.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: CSI creator Anthony Zuiker signed a deal with publishing house Dutton to create a trio of suspense/thriller “digital novels” that include print, online video and social networking components, reports Variety. At the end of each five chapters readers will receive a code they plug into a website in order to view filmed vignettes that act as a transition to the next part of the story. The first title, Sqweegel, is due out in the fall of 2009 about a retired FBI (who guessed it) forensic investigator who picks up cases on the side. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: WowWee USA, Inc., developer/marketer/distributor of high-tech robotic and entertainment products, today, acquires the assets and business of Think Tank Toys Inc., which develops/manufactures/markets plush toys, novelty items, action figures and promotional toys, including third-party licensed character and properties.  The deal enters WowWee into the lower-priced merchandise market making it less reliant on seasonal sales and furthers its reach with new distribution channels.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Discovery U.S.‘ 3-year old U.K. office is closing its doors for efficiency’s sake to focus commissioning efforts in its U.S. headquarters.  The changes will not have an effect on other Discovery offices such as Discovery UK, Europe, Middle East and North Africa based in London.  The three staffers in the Discovery U.S. will be affected, although it is unclear as of whether they will fill other positions.  The employees include SVP/Production and Development Peter Lovering and Director/Production and Development Alan Eyres.  Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.
