Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 25, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

3net ( www.3net.com ), a joint venture 24/7 3D TV network from Sony, Discovery and Imax, plans to expand its programming lineup with a kid/family-targeted 3D programming block debuting, titled 3net Three Dee Kids, this fall.  Aimed at K7-12/families, the block will launch in a special primetime premiere with the new 3D animated series Bolts & Blip (26×30) and Dream Defenders (26×30), Sunday, September 25 at 8p.  Three Dee Kids will take up its regular weekend timeslots, Saturday and Sunday at 10a, from Saturday, October 1.  Other programming that will debut in the block includes the world 3D TV exclusive premieres of Sony Pictures 3D family movies, and the live-action original series Feeding Time, the 3net exclusive Puppy Bowl, a new short-form kid-centric content among others.  Bolts & Blip is produced by ToonBox Entertainment in partnership with South Korea’s Red Rover, and Dream Defenders is produced by Tiny Island Productions.

Nickelodeon Consumer Products (NCP), a division of Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN), moves its Canadian licensing and merchandising business in-house with the establishment of the NCP Canada office this October 1, 2011.  The Toronto-based NCP Canada will headed by Tanya Visano, Sr. Director, and will exclusively represent VIMN’s properties and brands, including Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central, as well as manage operations and retail and licensee relationships for NCP.  The NCP Canada team also includes Jeremy Potvin, Director/Softlines, Jean Brozny, Sr. Manager/Marketing and Brand Management, Daniel Christamtsis, Sr., Manager/Hardlines, and Matthew Spataro, Coordinator/Retail Marketing.  NCP Canada will focus its energies on its Something for Everyone portfolio, which includes properties across all demos – preschool, kids, tweens, teens, and adults.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Hoho Entertainment has begun pre-production on its first CGI animated preschool series Cloudbabies (52×10) for CBeebies (UK), which acquired the series for air in 2012.  Cloudbabies follows four childlike characters, Baba Pink, Baba Blue, Baba Yellow and Baba Green, who are responsible for caring for the sky and their Sky Friends  Sun, moon, Rainbow, Fuffa Cloud and Little Star.  The characters live together with Bobo White, a little imp, in a house on a fluffy cloud.  Created by art director Bridget Appleby, Cloudbabies will be animated by Studio Liddell, which also serves as co-production partners on the series.  Hoho Entertainment was founded earlier this year by Oliver Ellis and Helen Howells.

MORE KIDS STUFF

TeenNick adds two classic Nickelodeon animated series, Rocko’s Modern Life and Hey Arnold!, to its new The ’90s Are All That ( www.90sareallthat.com ) two-hour programming block.  Rocko and Hey Arnold, added by viewer request, will debut in the line up with back-to-back episodes on Monday, September 5 at 12a and 1a, respectively.  The following day the two series will take up their regular timeslots in the block at 1a and 1:30a, along with other Nick series All That and Kenan & Kel.  The ‘90s Are All That airs Monday-Friday 12-2a, and replays on TeenNick 2-4a.

Associated Television International has now cleared its new educational/informational (E/I) series Elizabeth Stanton’s Great Big World in 85+% of the US.  The show is scheduled to debut the week of September 12, 2011 on Fox O&Os, with station groups Sinclair, Cox, Meredith, Tribune, and CW+ signed on as well.  The series, which follows teen Elizabeth Stanton as she travels and learns about history, geography and cultures, is also produced by Associated Television International.

IDW Publishing and Nickelodeon unveil the inaugural issue of the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic series, which is now available across North America.  With Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman, the new TMNT series feature a new take on the original series, led by Eastman ad co-writer Tom Waltz (Silent Hill: Past Life, Infestation: Outbreak).  The new comic series also features interior art by Dan Duncan, and cover art on the first two issues by Sam Kieth and Walter Simonson.  Issues 3-5 will artist Fred Hembeck will pay homage to classic covers.  Additionally, IDW will also offer Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Collection, with volume 1 set for release in October 2011.  The Ultimate Collection includes Mirage Studio’s issues 1-7, and the Raphael one-shot by Eastman and co-creator Peter Laird.

Two young members of the Scholastic News Kids Press Crops sat down to interview President Barack Obama at the White House this summer.  Kid reporters, Topanga Sena (10, Florida) and Jacob Schroeder (12, New Mexico) spoke with the President about a range of topics including the economy’s effect on families trying to make ends meet, the importance of education for jobs of the future, the relevance of the US Constitution, and what books were important when he was a kid.  President Obama also spoke about how he talks to his daughters about the events of September 11.  The full video interview is available at www.scholastic.com/kidspress.  Additionally, portions of the interview will be featured in Scholastic classroom magazines Scholastic News, Junior Scholastic and The New York Times Upfront this fall.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Winnipeg-based Ameba, a multiplatform digital distribution service for kids aimed entertainment, inks a new partnership with LG Electronics.  Under the deal Ameba becomes a partner on the LGE Smart TV platform in Canada, including having the Ameba Smart Kids TV digital distribution service pre-installed on all LGE Smart TV< DVD and Blu-ray consumer electronic devices available in Canada.  The new agreement will see Ameba reach 1.5+ million homes in North America over the next year.  Ameba has 2,000+ episodes available to kids/families.

In the UK, P2 Games releases the first app for the boy-targeted construction brand, My 1st JCB, which is now available for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.  Targeted to preschoolers, the My 1st JCB App features all ten characters from the My 1ste JCB team and focuses on interactive early learning skills.  Players can select from nine mini-games and activities on their own, with Joey JCB to help them through.  Games/activities include painting, memory, matching, sorting, connect the dots, jigsaws, racing and the chance to create a vehicle.
