Cynopsis: Kids!
08/23/12
Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 23, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
As part of a growing trend to develop toys that marry the digital with the physical world, Toy maker Mattel rolls out a new line of toys called Apptivity that are screen-safe and designed to be used with iPad apps. Consumers can purchase the toys at retail, then play with the plastic toys on Apptivity apps downloaded from the app store by tapping on the app and placing the toy on the iPad screen. Mattel said it launched the new line of toys to take advantage of the number of kids who are using games on iPads. Apptivity single packs retail for $9.99 and include vehicles for Hot Wheels mini-games, characters from Cut the Rope and Fruit Ninja, action figures of WWE stars for WWE Rumblers, as well as toys for the Batman The Dark Knight Rises app. Monster High toys will be available in October. The Apptivity games can also be played without the toys.
Entertainment company Entertainment One Family strikes deals with major broadcasters across Asia for Peppa Pig and other shows. The deals call for Eastern Broadcasting Corporation in Taiwan to carry Peppa Pig on its children’s pay TV channel Yo Yo, with Taiwan’s broadcaster PTS to run Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom. In Hong Kong, channel TVB will air both shows, with Mediacorp in Singapore also picking up both shows as well as pre-school series Tractor Tom. In addition, Thailand Cineplex is set to carry Peppa Pig, Humf and Tractor Tom as part of this spate of deal-making.
Universal said it’s targeting a Dec. 19, 2014 release date for The Untitled Minions Project, a planned spin-off to the 2010 hit animated flick Despicable Me. The film grossed more than $540 million worldwide and a sequel is slated for July 2013 release. The Untitled Minions Project, will be produced by Illumination Entertainment and is said to focus on the minions from the original film.
YLE in Finland acquires broadcast rights from producer-distributor Breakthrough Entertainment for Dino Dan, a CGI and live-action adventure series about dinosaurs coming to life via imagination. The show now runs in 85 countries, including on Nick Jr.
