~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Jerry Seinfeld is returning to television!  Okay, not in a series or even a special, but as a spokesman for Microsoft.  The computer giant is rolling out a $300 million campaign devised by their new ad agency, Omnicom Group, Publicis Groupe, Interpublic Group.  The campaign will feature Jerry along wtih Bill Gates, plugging a variation on the old adage – “windows, not doors”, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Telemundo will wake up Hispanic viewers as Levantate (which means Wake Up), a new two-hour live morning show debuts next Monday at 7a. Hosted by a trio of TV personalities, Alan Tacher, Rashel Diaz and Erika Garza the show will offer advice, current topics talk and entertainment information in addition to participation from comedian/impressionist, Raymond Arrieta. The show will also have hosts situated in Los Angeles, New York, Miami and Mexico who will contribute via satellite. Produced from Telemundo Puerto Rico, the show will be led by producer Tony Mojena. In addition, Levantate will contain interactive elements as viewers can add input via email and the show’s website at Yahoo! Telemundo.

As has been the habit for the last couple of Bachelors, the next bachelor on ABC‘s The Bachelor, will be the last standing rejected guy from The Bachelorette – divorced single dad, Jason Mesnick. He will star in the edition set to premiere in January 2009.

NBC Universal will purchase U.K. independent production company, Carnival Film & Television Ltd. The acquisition is the first for NBCU’s International TV Production unit led by Angela Bromstad, President, International TV Production and signifies the company’s desire to expand its production presence beyond the U.S. Founded in 1978, Carnival has produced more than 400 hours of drama for TV and theatrical including Traffik, The Grid, Jeeves and Wooster, Hotel Babylon (series 1-3) among other titles. The terms of the deal give NBCU 100% ownership of Carnival whose current shareholders are Southern Star at 75% and Gareth Neame, CEO/Carnival at 25%. NBCU will also pick up library rights to Carnival titles and distribution rights held by Southern Star. Once the agreement is complete, Carnival will merge into NBCU’s International TV Production unit based in London.

And a reminder – there will be no editions tomorrow of Cynopsis.  We’ve got a late night tonight at the Cynopsis Foundation Charity Dinner & Auction, and the Cynopsis offices will be closed tomorrow.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Lifetime Television ordered production to begin next month in Washington, D.C. on a new six-episode series called Blonde Charity Mafia. The docu-series follows the lives of two D.C. twentysomething socialites, Katherine Kennedy and Krista Johnson who throw nearly weekly charity events that have become the hottest tickets in that town. PB&J Television produces for Lifetime.

Sophina Brown will become a regular on CBS’ Numb3rs as the series begins its fifth season on October 3 at 10p. Sophina will play new agent, Nikki Betancourt, an ex-LAPD cop who got her law degree at night school. Nikki’s case handling style will come into conflict with team leader, Don played by Rob Morrow.

Comcast Entertainment Group and Ryan Seacrest have expanded their working partnership with a new multi-year deal that allows Ryan Seacrest Productions to provide programming for Comcast’s stable of networks beyond E! and The Style Network including G4, Versus, Golf Channel, Exercise TV, FEARnet, Comcast Sportsnet and PBS Kids Sprout. Comcast Entertainment Group continues to have “first look” rights to all Ryan Seacrest Productions projects through August 2011 and Ryan will continue to be Managing Editor/Anchor on E! News along with Giuliana Rancic and serve as Executive Producer/Host of E!’s Live From the Red Carpet specials. These latter two functions have been extended through early 2012. In addition, the new deal includes an advertising collaboration between E! and Ryan’s radio shows American Top 40 and the L.A.-based On-Air with Ryan Seacrest.

ABC Studios bought a script from writers Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith (House Bunny) for a potential autobiographical series about the duo’s lives. Karen and Kirsten will write the pilot and be the consulting producers if the project gets noticed.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Comcast has come up with a new remedy for keeping bandwidth hogs from slowing down the network for everyone. The MSO plans to penalize them by slowing down their connections to a crawl for a period of 10 to 15 minutes, according to Bloomberg, after which their connections would return to normal. Only this time the company promises not to discriminate against users based on the application they’re using. (Comcast formerly blocked users from accessing BitTorrent, which got it into trouble with the FCC.) The only problem with this approach is that users watching video from legitimate sites will also be affected, whether they’re streaming free TV episodes from ABC.com or watching a movie from Netflix. At $59.95/month, is it too much to ask to be able watch video online?  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: There will be no marketing of TV programming specifically aimed at French babies/toddlers, as France’s broadcast authority, the High Audiovisual Council, issued an edict banning French TV channels from directly marketing programming to kids under three due to developmental risks, according to the Associated Press.  The governing body has also ruled that there must be warning messages aimed at parents on foreign baby-targeted channels that are broadcast in France, specifically referring to Baby TV, owned by News Corp., and BabyFirstTV, which is also tied to News Corp.’s Fox Entertainment, through its Regency Enterprises.  The warning will read, “Watching television can slow the development of children under 3, even when it involves channels aimed specifically at them.”  Guy Oranim, CEO/BabyFirstTV, told the AP that he, “respectfully objects” to the French ruling, continuing on to say that they the channel was created to address a void in programming for the under 3 set, who are according to research, “watching TV anyway.”   Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Marking the first purchase by NBC Universal‘s International Television Production unit, the company has decided to acquire 100% of U.K. indie production house Carnival Film & Television Ltd.  The 30-year old company is known for its scripted drama, including BBC’s Hotel Babylon and ITV’s Midnight Man, Harley Street and the new Whitechapel.  Carnival’s current shareholders are Southern Star (75%) and Gareth Neame, Carnival’s CEO (25%).  The deal covers library rights and Southern Star’s distribution rights.  Carnival will be merged into NBC Universal’s International TV Production division under the unit’s London-based President, Angela Bromstad. Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.
