Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 21, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

There will be no marketing of TV programming specifically aimed at French babies/toddlers, as France’s broadcast authority, the High Audiovisual Council, issued an edict banning French TV channels from directly marketing programming to kids under three due to developmental risks, according to the Associated Press.  The governing body has also ruled that there must be warning messages aimed at parents on foreign baby-targeted channels that are broadcast in France, specifically referring to Baby TV, owned by News Corp., and BabyFirstTV, which is also tied to News Corp.’s Fox Entertainment, through its Regency Enterprises.  The warning will read, “Watching television can slow the development of children under 3, even when it involves channels aimed specifically at them.”  Guy Oranim, CEO/BabyFirstTV, told the AP that he, “respectfully objects” to the French ruling, continuing on to say that they the channel was created to address a void in programming for the under 3 set, who are according to research, “watching TV anyway.”

Disney launches Disney Community, a new social networking site for parents. The site provides a customizable online destination for parents to come together with other parents through any number of shared connections (e.g. interests, age of kids, family makeup, tips, geography etc.) and interact by joining groups and posting comments and questions about parenting.

Remember Elton John’s CGI animated movie project Gnomeo and Juliet, a Shakespearean adaptation about the star-crossed lovers from Miramax and John’s Rocket Pictures from a few years ago?  Well, looks like the movie might feature the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt, per The Hollywood Reporter.  The movie is expected to include a soundtrack featuring a number of John’s hit songs and maybe some new songs as well.  The movie had originally been set up at Disney.  Kate Winslet, who had been signed on to play Juliet is no longer attached to the project due to scheduling conflicts.  At one point Ewan McGregor was also associated with the project, but no word on his connection at this point.


Screenvision teams with Koch Vision to present the US premiere of the family movie Ballet Shoes, on screens of select Screenvision movie theater partners for a limited engagement from August 26.  Ballet Shoes is the BBC’s feature-length adaptation of Novel Streatfeild’s classic 1936 novel that stars Emma Watson (Harry Potter’s Hermione).  Koch plans to release the movie here on DVD.  The feature-length drama aired earlier this year on the BBC.

To get kids ready to vote in Nickelodeon’s Kids Pick the President beginning October 12, the network will prep the audience August 24-October 12 with short-form content from the Democratic and Republican National and two Nick News specials.  The network will also provide election-themed content for teachers to use in classrooms at
The Kids Pick the President Election Connection Team providing viewers with information from both National Conventions in interstitial and online segments that include profiles of the candidates.  Lil’ JJ will also blog on from both conventions.

Linda Ellerbee hosts two Nick News specials: debuting August 24 at 9p, Tales from the Trail follows kids rooting and campaigning for their respective candidates, and looking at what goes on at the conventions; the second special bows in October and will present kids’ questions to the candidates, then encouraging kids to go online and vote for their choice for President of the US.

A new season of Nick Jr.’s preschool animated series Dora the Explorer launching with a week of premiere episodes Monday-Thursday, September 15-18 at 10:30a, culminating with a five-hour marathon on Friday, September 19 (9a-2p). The marathon will feature all four new episodes along with previous Dora movies and specials.  The new season features Dora using more math to help solve problems and will also offer multi-word phrases in Spanish.  Additionally, the new season introduces a new voiceover cast including newcomer Caitlin Sanchez (12) taking on the role of Dora.  Nickelodeon and Sony BMG release the new CD, Dora the Explorer Party Favorites, a musical adventure featuring 16 musical tracks, on September 9

Adness Entertainment inks a license deal for its property Kamen Rider Dragon Knight (40×30) to Televisa (Mexico), which plans to launch the live-action series in 2009.  Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, a live-action series featuring CGI special effects, follows he adventures of a teen discovers a mysterious deck of cards that give him the power to transform into an ancient warrior called a Kamen Rider.  Produced by Adness Entertainment, the series is based on the original series Kamen Rider Kyuki, produced by the Toei Company.  The series will air in the US as part of 4Kids Entertainment’s new Saturday morning block, TheCW4Kids on The CW.

Lionsgate and Hit Entertainment will release Barney’s Night Before Christmas Movie on DVD October 14, 2008.  The DVD includes special features such as two read-a-longs, Barney’s Christmas Surprise and Barney’s Wonderful Winter Day, 10 sing-a-longs, an activity workbook and 8 interactive games, among others.


qubo teams with Kaboom!, the nonprofit that aims to fold play back into the daily lives of kids, in a year-long pact to celebrate communities that make play a priority through Kaboom’s Playful City USA initiative.  The partnership dovetails with qubo’s mission to promote healthy lifestyles for kids as well as Kaboom’s efforts for every kid to have a place to play within walking distance of their homes.  Next month Kaboom! and qubo will announce the list of 2008 Playful City USA communities and a corresponding marketing campaign including on-air and online promos, Public Service Announcements, print ads and conferences, including an event at the National League of Cities conference in Orlando, Florida.  As they have previously, qubo and Kaboom will again join to build another playground in 2009.

Scholastic celebrates the 10th anniversary of the US publishing of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Scholastic/Arthur A. Levine) with the release of the special anniversary edition of the book on September 23, 2008.  Additionally, to mark the event, Scholastic is inviting fans to its NYC headquarters in Soho to be part of Harry Potter Cover to Cover Day, an all day muggle read-a-thon on September 23 beginning at 8a, or for those who can’t be there to watch the live webcast at The special edition features exclusive bonus material from Rowling, as well as new cover art and a four-color frontispiece by Mary GrandPre.


4Kids Entertainment’s Alyssa Tucker, SVP/Marketing and Licensing Sales, expands her responsibilities.  Tucker will now oversee sales for all licensing sales activities for all 4Kids and 4Sight Licensing Solutions properties.  She will continue to manage marketing efforts for the America Kennel club and Cat Fanciers’ Association.  Tucker, who joined the company in 1996, reports to Rosalind Nowicki, EVP/marketing & Licensing and Carlin West, EVP/Property Acquisitions & Development, 4Kids Entertainment.
