Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 1, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
A couple of big stories out of the NFL yesterday beginning with the news that Steve Bornstein, President and CEO of the NFL Network and Executive VP of Media for the NFL, had opted to step aside when his contract expires next May. The New York Times broke the story, and the league confirmed that Brian Rolapp, COO of NFL Media, would succeed Bornstein. Recently, Bornstein was instrumental in the landmark nine-year extension the league inked with CBS, FOX and NBC though the 2022 season. Bornstein previously spent 22 years at ESPN and ABC where he helped establish ESPN as the leader in sports programming.
The NFL announced that the 2014 Pro Bowl, presented by McDonald’s will be completely overhauled in order to make the event more fan-friendly. With the AFC vs. NFC format out the window, the league revealed that players will be selected by top votes no matter which conference they play in with players then assigned to a Pro Bowl draft where two top NFL.com fantasy football champs will draft players with alumni captains Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders. The Pro Bowl Draft will air on NFL Network on Jan. 22 with the Pro Bowl on NBC on Jan. 26.
Meanwhile, ESPN and NFL Network announced plans for this weekend’s 2013 Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. ESPN2 will televise the Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony this Saturday, Aug. 3, beginning at 7p with NFL Live host Trey Wingo, along with tom Jackson and Sal Paolantonio covering the festivities. Chris Berman once again serves as emcee for the event, which will honor names that include ESPN NFL analyst Cris Carter and NFL contributor Bill Parcells, along with Larry Allen, Curley Culp, Jonathan Ogden, Dave Robinson and Warren Sapp.
Around the dial, NFL Network offers its own coverage of the Enshrinement ceremony Saturday at 7p with its own personality Sapp being honored. Programming leading up to the festivities will include Class for the Ages, a roundtable discussion of current Hall of Fame members tonight at 10p and NFL Total Access airing live from Canton from 4-7p.
ESPN Networks will carry 69 live weekday college football games this season, with the company detailing schedules for weekly Thursday and Friday night matchups and on select Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the season. Weekday games will include at least one team from all 10 Football Bowl Subdivision conferences as well as independents BYU and Navy, including 12 teams currently ranked in an early ESPN preseason top 25 poll. Overall, the 2013 college football season on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3, ESPN Radio, ESPN Mobile TV, ESPN Regional Television and ESPN GamePlan will total more than 450 regular-and post-season games.
NBC Sports Group’s Fight Night is back on Saturday at 10:30p on NBC Sports Network with a three-bout card headlined by middleweights Curtis “Showtime” Stevens (24-3, 17 KOs) of Brooklyn, N.Y., against Saul “La Fiera” Roman (37-9, 31 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico. Kenny Rice handles play-by-play with analyst B.J. Flores and reporter Chris Mannix will call the action. Special guest and former boxer Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini will join the booth.
SoCal’s KCAL 9 drew the highest local television rating for a Los Angeles Dodgers regular season game since June 1998 on Tuesday night with its broadcast of the Dodgers’ 3-2 victory over the Yankees at Dodger Stadium. The station drew an average of 603,000 viewers with its broadcast, based on live plus same-day data provided by Nielsen. In households, Tuesday’s game scored a 7.0 rating and 12 share the highest local rating for regular season Dodger game on any broadcast or cable outlet since June 25.
ESPN Dallas announced that Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez signed on to serve as a contributor for ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM and 1540 AM ESPN Deportes Dallas for the remainder of the 2013 baseball season. Rodriguez will work for both stations including a bi-weekly call-in segment, the voice of featured “Pudge’s Eye” vignettes as well as personal appearances.
