Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 19, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Beyond Distribution will debuts its new preschool property Toybox (75×30) at MipJunior in Cannes, October 2-3.  Created by Ian Munro and Ron Saunders (Hi-5, New MacDonald’s Farm, Bananas in Pyjamas, Magic Mountain and Milly, Molly), Toybox is designed to encourage kids to use their imagination and get up and dancing to music.  The series follows the adventures of a group of toy friends and the mischief and fun they have when they are left alone and come to life.  Created with the assistance of childhood development experts, each episode features segments where the characters and audience discovers things together.  Among the cast members is actress Brittany Byrnes (Babe).

Showcase for Kids heads to MipJunior in October where it introduce its new series Tiny Warriors, and will also focus its properties YooHoo and Friends, Action Dad and The Wannabes.

  • Targeted to kids/tweens 9-12, the animated series YooHoo and Friends (52×11) follows five greedy corporate executives that have been transformed into cute, furry creatures by Father Time.  The execs will remains as cute critters until they understand the error of their ways and collect the multiples pieces of an emerald, which are scattered around the world.
  • The Wannabes (26×30) is a live-action comedy featuring Savvy, a multicultural singing/dance troupe comprised of kids at an arts school.  Written/co-produced by Doreen Spicer (Jump In!, The Proud Family) and directed by Eric Dean Seaton (Sonny with a Chance, That’s So Raven, Cory in the House).  Savvy is preparing a live tour with dates already set in Germany, Latin America, and Australia.
  • Action Dad (26×30) – Currently in production this series follows teen siblings Liz and Mick Ramsey and their unique parents.  While their dad is a secret action hero and mom is a secret villain, working for competing agencies, they do share the same attitudes about family and kids.  The series is penned by Henry Gilroy (Star Wars: The Clone Wars).
  • Tiny Warriors – a new 3D series that follows four small animal warriors, each of which embraces a different martial arts form under the watchful eye of their teacher Master Moose.  When their teacher goes missing, the team must protect the most mysterious martial arts move from evildoers as they search for Master Moose.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Director/producer Ivan Reitman is developing a movie based on The Kid Table, an upcoming young adult novel from author Andrea Seigel, per Coming Soon.  Reitman will produce the movie and writer Justin Adler (Better Off Ted, Less Than Perfect, Futurama) is adapting the book for the movie.  The Kid Table, set for release from Bloomsbury USA Children’s Books on September 14, 2010, revolves around Ingrid and her group of siblings and cousins who have long been seated at the kid’s table at family functions … until the oldest is promoted to the adult table causing some consternation for the rest of the gang, particularly Ingrid.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel will offer a North American sneak peek at Aardman Animation‘s preschool stop-motion animated series Timmy Time ( www.timmytime.tv ) on September 7.  Following the preview Timmy Time get its official debut on the channel on September 13.  The series is based on characters in Aardman’s series Shaun the Sheep, which runs also runs on Disney Channel.  Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment will handle DVD distribution for the series here, with the first title slated for release in early 2011.  Additionally, the Timmy Time toy line from Jakks Pacific will launch in spring 2011.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Kmart launches its new young girl-targeted doll line, What a Doll.  Designed to encourage girls to express their personal style, imagination and the importance of friendship, the doll collection includes dolls (18-inch), travel bags, identical girl/doll outfits, cosmetics and accessories.  Additional dolls and season clothing will be available from October and November.  Additionally, the What a Doll line is featured online at Kmart.com, where, in addition to shopping, there are activities for kids to do with parents, including ideas for play dates, parties, cooking and outdoor activities, as well as coloring pages.  No doubt Kmart is hoping the What a Doll line will be as appealing to kids and parents as the American Girl line, but with a lower price point, with the What a Doll dolls priced at $29.99, and clothes/accessories from $20-25.  The What a Doll collection is available exclusively at select Kmart stores in the US and online.  Kmart is a subsidiary of Sears Holdings Corporation.

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) enters into a partnership with Hybrid Apparel to create a line of youth apparel based on Cartoon Network’s action-adventure series Generator Rex ( www.generator-rex.com ).  The deal was announced at the Magic Marketplace convention in Las Vegas.  Set to launch in the US for spring 2011, the apparel line will include a range of tops for boys 4-20 (t-shirts long and short-sleeved, fleece, and sweatshirts).  Additionally, CNE will release the first Generator Rex title on DVD on October 19, which will be distributed by Warner Home Video.  Generator Rex is created by Man of Action (Ben 10) and produced at Cartoon Network Studios.

Papercutz will launch The Smurfs graphic novel series with the first two titles next month.  The first book in the series includes The Purple Smurf, a story previously unpublished in English.  Papercutz will also publish the first comic story in which the Smurfs ever appeared, The Smurfs and the Magic Flute.  The new graphic novel series comes about a year ahead of the release of Sony/Columbia’s mixed live-action CG animated Smurfs movie, currently in production and set for release on August 2011.  The Smurf movie cast includes Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Hank Azaria, Alan Cumming, Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry and George Lopez.

Animagic Entertainment Group will release Balloonatiks: The Collector’s Set on DVD on October 18.  The Balloonatiks is a CGI animated series that features a voiceover cast including Mark Hamill, Debi Derryberry (Jimmy Neutron), and Billy West (Futurama, among many others), and a theme song performed by Ray Parker Jr. (Ghostbusters).

4sight licensing solutions, a unit of 4Kids Entertainment, inks a multi-year deal with Pet Brands to serve as the master dog toy licensee for the American Kennel Club (AKC).  Under the pact, Pet Brands has the rights to manufacture and distribute dog toys (plush, rubber, vinyl etc.) in addition to dog chews/treats (jerky, rawhide, treats, biscuits), dog bowls, and AKC-branded containers and AKC imagery across North America through 2013.  Jakks Pets, a division of Jakks Pacific, previously held the dog toy license.
