Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 11, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Hong Kong Phooey, number one super guy… Eddie Murphy will lend his voice to the animated superhero Hong Kong Phooey (aka a janitor named Penry) in Alcon Entertainment‘s new mixed live-action/animated feature film, which is based on the popular 1970s Hanna-Barbera animated TV series. Alex Zamm (Dr. Dolittle: Million Dollar Mutts, Tooth Fairy 2) will direct Hong Kong Phooey, with Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove set to produce with Jay Stern and Brett Ratner. Steven P. Wegner will executive produce the project. Remember … Hong Kong Phooey, quicker than the human eye.
Warner Bros. Pictures conjures the top-grossing feature film release of 2011 across all categories so far in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. The newest, and final installment, of the Harry Potter movies, which has toppled box office records around the world since it opened less than a month ago in July, 2011, has reached $1.1 billion ($344.8 million domestically and $801.5 million internationally), making it the third-highest-grossing film worldwide of all time. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is, per Box Office Mojo, trails behind Titanic ($1.8 billion) and Avatar ($2.8 billion).
BBC Worldwide Channels orders more programming for its international channels including the new preschool series Mr. Bloom’s Nursery for CBeebies. BBC Worldwide Channels has given the go ahead for two seasons of the new in-house series Mr. Bloom’s Nursery (26×20), which is a mixed love-action and puppet program that revolves around Mr. Bloom, played by Ben Faulks, a green thumbed gardener, who helps preschool viewers learn though nurturing plants and vegetables. Mr. Bloom’s Nursery is produced by the BBC and set to air on international feeds of CBeebies in 2012. Mr. Bloom’s Nursery joins other newly ordered kid-aimed BBC productions including: Andy’s Wild Adventures (40×15), produced by BBC’s Natural History Unit; Baby Jake (26×11); Jollywobbles (13×9); the first series of Zingzillas Zing Bop (20×5), season two of Gigglebiz (16×15); season two of ZingZillas (52×11); the third season of Show Me Show Me (15×28); and the sixth season of Nina & the Neurons (25×14).
Disney Channel will launch its new series Jessie on Friday, September 30, at 9p, which will simulcast on Sprint TV and MobiTV, and the premiere episode will also be available on DisneyChannel.com. The comedy stars Debby Ryan (The Suite Life on Deck, 16 Wishes) as Jessie, a small-town Texas teen that heads to New York City to serve as a nanny to a wealthy family with four precocious kids (ages 13, 12, 10 and 7) and their pet, a 7-foot Asian Water Monitor Lizard. Created by producer Pamela Eells O’Connell (Family Matters, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, The Suite Life on Deck), Jessie is a production of It’s A Laugh Productions. The multiplatform support and rollout for Jessie includes:
- Saturday, August 27 DisneyChannel.com will launch the Jessie super site, featuring the game Jessie’s Ross Wrangle, videos, weekly quizzes, among other things
- Tuesday, September 20 free download of Jessie will be available on iTunes and Sony PS.
- Friday, September 23 The debut episode of Jessie will be available via Disney Channel on Demand (SVOD)
- Saturday, October 1 The premiere episode will be available on Mobile VOD (AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon) and Microsoft Xbox.
BBC’s preschool channel CBeebies helps US Hispanic and Latin American preschoolers end the summer and head off to school with a special programming event, Especial: Regreso a Clases, August 15-20 (Monday-Friday 4p-6p, Saturday, 10a-3p), as part of its Tiempo de Descubrir (Time to Discovery) programming block. Regreso a clases will feature episodes of Penelope K (Monday), Yu Puedo Cocinar (Tuesday), Paca y Paya (Wednesday), Dibujemos con Squiglet (Thursday), and ZingZillas (Friday), all focusing on learning, good eating habits, teamwork and creativity. During Saturday’s five-hour Especial: Regreso a clases, the channel will offer the week’s special episodes back-to-back. BBC Worldwide’s CBeebies broadcasts in Spanish and is available in the US on Channel 848 as part of Dish Networks’ DishLatino package.
Curious George returns for a new season of misadventures beginning Labor Day, September 5, 2011 on PBS Kids (check local listings). That week Monday-Wednesday, September 5-7, PBS Kids will debut three all new episodes. The new sixth season of Curious George ( www.pbskids.com/curiousgeorge) is comprised of ten new episodes, many of which that revolve around George as he encourages preschool kids to use their creativity and be curious about the arts, including painting, sculpture, music, dancing and photography. Based on the Curious George books by Margret and H.A. Rey, the animated Curious George TV series is a production of Imagine Entertainment, WGBH Boston, and Universal Studios Family Productions, with funding from public TV viewers. National Corporate Sponsorship for the series is provided by Chuck E. Cheese’s, Rainforest Cafe, and Stride Rite Children’s Group.
Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific reorganizes its sponsorship and promotions department and re-names its Turner Media Solutions. The new Turner Media Solutions, which also includes the new creative site TurnerMediaSolutions.com ( www.turnermediasolutions.com), is designed to be a full service in-house agency that will create customized marketing campaigns for its Turner clients. Offering animation, directors, musicians and game developers, the new department aims to help advertisers connect with Turner’s dozen entertainment brands through unique integrated campaigns. Chapman Entertainment names Spearmark as the housewares and lighting licensee for the animated preschool series Raa Raa the Noisy Lion, which airs on CBeebies (UK). Under the deal, Spearmark will produce lunch bags, plastic bottles, melamine bowls, tumblers and plate sets, as well as grab ‘n glows, glitter lamps, bedside lamps, pendant lampshades, push lights, among other things, for release at retail in fall/winter 2012.
Footwear company Skechers USA inks a youth-targeted electronics and accessories licensing deal with Sakar International. The new product line, which will feature Skechers branding and Skechers Kids’ animated characters, is slated to launch at retail across the US in Q1 2012. Under the pact, Sakar will design, produce and distribute a range of Skechers-branded electronics and accessories, including MP3 players, molded ear buds, speakers, digital cameras, cases, skins, and USB flash drives based on Skechers Kids’ footwear styles. Products aimed at boys and girls in elementary through high school will feature artwork from Skechers’ Zevo-3 animated TV series, the Twinkle Toes by Skechers collection, as well as other Skechers Kids’ characters and Skechers branding. Skechers recently completed a licensing deal with Li & Fung’s LF USA for Skechers Fitness apparel and accessories in the US, as well as with partners for numbers other products, while continuing to identify other licensee opportunities around the world.
