Good morning, it’s Thursday, April 8, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The internet is buzzing about the unveiling of Apple‘s 4.0 iPhone operating system happening today (Thursday.) The next generation iPhone OS is expected to (finally) support multitasking and the ability to run multiple apps simultaneously, as well as feature an integrated geo-targeted mobile banner ad solution for the first time. Apple, which lost out to Google in a bidding war for AdMob last fall, purchased mobile ad company Quattro Wireless for $275 million in Jan. and has been presumably been working on developing a working iPhone ad platform for advertisers. On the other hand, Google recently won a patent for its system that serves ads dynamically based on a user’s location, notes AllThingsD – begging the question of whether or not a rival Apple system will run into legal challenges. At the same time, Google must convince the FTC that its AdMob acquisition will not give it undue power in the mobile ad marketplace.


In its quest to survive in the age of Netflix and Redbox, Blockbuster has signed deals with two more Hollywood studios – Sony Pictures Entertainment and 20th Century Fox – giving it a head start on new release rentals. The deal, similar to the one struck with Warner Bros. last month, provides Blockbuster with day-and-date availability of movies for its stores and mail order channels. So far, Warner Bros. is the only studio to ink a deal with Netflix and Redbox to delay their new releases by 28 days, but Sony and Fox are now expected to follow suit.
Tribune Media Service’s Zap2it online TV site has struck an ad sales agreement with i.TV to represent banner and interstitial inventory on their popular TV and movie entertainment guide iPhone app. Both Zap2it and i.TV have recently undergone redesigns. Zap2it’s new site features a cleaner look, an enhanced video section now integrated with Hulu and content from new partners TMZ, PopEater, Hollywood Life, Access Hollywood, AOL TV and Television Without Pity. iTV’s version 2.3 app for the iPhone provides listings data for more TV providers as well as improved Tivo remote functionality.
Sundance Channel‘s The Green programming block announced another provocatively titled Isabella Rossellini project. The five-part original series “Seduce Me,” launching exclusively online at on April 20th, explores the mating rituals of bugs, fish and other creatures. The 2-minute shorts will subsequently appear on VOD on May 5 and on air on May 25.
Bravo stuck an exclusive deal with Target to begin selling DVDs of many of its top series from April 13 including the New York City and Atlanta versions of its “Real Housewives” franchise, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List and Flipping Out. The DVD sets will be sold exclusively at Target for a 12-week run.


Jerusalem-based start-up Qlipso has acquired the assets of online video sharing service Veoh Networks after the well-funded start-up declared Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in Feb. Qlipso, a cross between a massive multiplayer gaming platform and Facebook, operates a P2P social networking and content sharing service that enables users to create their own avatar, set up viewing parties and purchase virtual goods.
Crowdsourced consumer product design and sales platform Quirky has raised $6 million in Series A capital led by RRE Ventures, including participation from Village Ventures, Contour Venture Partners and Lowercase Capital. Quirky taps an online community of more than 20,000 members from around the world to incubate and launch new products.
Babelgum has uploaded over 250 short films to its online, iPhone and Android mobile sites, finalists for the 3rd annual Babelgum Online Film Festival. Cash-based Audience Awards will be given in 4 categories and winners of the Stoli Emerging Filmmaker Award and BOFF3 Jury Awards will be screened on April 28 during the Tribeca Film Festival.

Meghan Fox has lent her charms to a local PTA Chapter in this Funny Or Die video in Los Angeles to protest nearly $2.5 billion in proposed education cuts from the California state budget.


While Google and Apple draw lines in the sand over the mobile display market, mobile video ad start-up mDialog is adapting the HTML 5 mobile video standard to its mobile ad serving platform. The company claims it is the first dynamic ad-insertion platform to deliver high-quality adaptive bit rate streaming pre-roll and mid-roll ads using the next generation standard, making it the first working video ad platform that works on the iPad. The mDialog interface allows broadcasters encode multiple renditions from the master, create separate transport streams for each rendition, choose where to place geo-targeted in stream ads and target and track impressions of customized ad campaigns.
Millennial Media also announced that it is releasing an SDK and a creative software suite with new creative ad formats built specifically for the iPad. The “PadMedia” creative’s, such as floating rich media banners and units that utilize the iPad’s accelerometer, will be formatted and available on other tablet devices later in 2010. Millennial Media, which acquired mobile analytics firm TapMetrics in Feb. 2010, also provides a full metrics solution tracking usage and behavior.
Digital fitness media company Zoom Media & Marketing has acquired the assets of Sports Display, Inc., a California-based firm that places local advertising in a network of static displays across North America.


Content delivery network Sorenson Media announced that its internet video solutions have been optimized for the Apple iPad – including its multiplatform Sorenson 360 online video platform.


Despite the horrible economic conditions and a plunge of overall ad revenue of 9%-12%, internet ad revenue declined by only 3.4% to total $22.7 billion in 2009, according to estimates by the IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers. What’s more, Q4 ad spending – a typically robust season – reached a record high $6.3 billion, a 3% increase from the previous year. Digital video ad spending was up 39% in ’09, garnering over $1 billion (vs. $734 million in ’08.) Search and display-related advertising continue to represent the largest percentages of the overall interactive ad spend, with search revenues comprising 47% or nearly $10.7 billion for 2009 and display-related ads (includes display ads, rich media, digital video and sponsorship) totaling nearly $8 billion in 2009. Performance based pricing, the most prevalent pricing model since 2006, maintained a strong sequential growth rate while CPM/Impression-based pricing continued to decline as a percentage of revenue, with performance growing to a 59% market share and CPM pricing dropping to 37%.

Distant 4th U.S. search engine continued eke out gains in search market share in March, according to new data from Hitwise, rising to a 3.44% share – a growth rate of 21%. Yahoo also experienced a gain while Bing and Google, still the dominant player, declined slightly.

Nintendo has developed a Wii game with Google in which players compete to generate the most search engine results. “Ando Kensaku,” scheduled for release on April 29 in Japan, asks
players to compete by correctly guessing the most popular web search terms, and the word with the most hits wins.


Independent web studio Vuguru has hired film industry veteran Kristin Jones as Chief Creative Officer, brought on to develop scripted filmed entertainment. David C. Shall has also been tapped serve as Head of Business Operations and General Counsel. Kristin formerly served as SVP/Production, International Development and Acquisitions for Miramax while David was EVP/Business Operations and General Counsel at FremantleMedia North America.
Social online advertising company KickApps has hired Tricia Iboshi, co-founder and VP of Biz Dev at RocketVox Corp. (which later merged with thePlatform), as EVP/Sales.

One of the most compelling applications on the net continues to be the ability to track purchases, views or preferences of like-minded individuals then recommend things users may like. (Amazon is about to move into new multimillion-dollar digs built by Paul Allen’s Vulcan group here in Seattle, based largely upon the success of this model.) White-label music and video online recommendation service The Filter, launched with musician Peter Gabriel, has struck its first commercial partnership with a major network to power short-form video recommendations on The Filter will bring relevant video selections from NBC’s catalog to encourage users to sample other shows they might like. In that spirit, I recommend this new mock corporate minisite from the writers of NBC’s 30 Rock, Kabletown, riffing on a running satire on the cable industry’s best kept dirty little secret. While you’re at it check out, created by a marketer at T3 in New York whose daughter is couch surfing in her tiny New York apartment until she finds work. Does anyone out there have a job for poor Shelby?
