CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

04/06/06

Good Morning. It’s Thursday, April 6, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

We all know by now that Katie Couric will be leaving NBC and joining CBS News. A few more details have emerged: Katie will become anchor and Managing Editor of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric in a multi-year agreement beginning in September. She will also contribute to 60 Minutes and anchor CBS News primetime specials. With this new appointment, Katie becomes the first female solo anchor of a network evening news broadcast.  Nothing final on her replacement for Today morning show, tho the rumors are a-flyin’.

Tonight’s Premiere:
Spike TV:  The Ultimate Fighter at 10p

Tonight’s Finale:
MTV:  Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘N Out at 10p and The Shop at 1030p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *
Lifetime Programming Update:  Cheerleader Nation, originally scheduled on Sundays at 10p (opposite dynamo Grey’s Anatomy on ABC) has moved to Fridays at 7p.  The show began with 1.6 million viewers back in the second week of March, and on March 31st – its first Friday time period, it delivered a modest 779,000 viewers.

New York radio show host and Sirius Satellite personality Cipha Sounds will become MTV’s newest VJ by hosting Direct Effect starting Monday during Sucker Free Week. He will eventually host other projects for MTV, MTV Overdrive and MTV Wireless.

WE: Women’s Entertainment will premiere a new original series Two Funny: Cotter & Louise on Saturday. The six-episode, half-hour show will follow the lives of two comedians, Tom Cotter and Kerri Louise, featured on NBC’s Last Comic Standing. The show is produced by Burrud Productions.

MTV’s latest News and Docs series, Tiara Girls, premieres April 19, showcasing the world of beauty pageant contestants – how they prepare, train and hire coaches, as well as their expectations on winning. Following each episode will be an aftershow with extra footage available on MTV Overdrive.

MSN and Mark Burnett Productions are teaming up to provide content online from the second season of CBS’ Rock Star. Weekly behind-the-scenes episodes will be streamed on the web from MSN. The content will include exclusive drama produced by MSN, a performance and a results show produced by CBS and wireless content.

One Punk, Under God, an original six-part documentary series, has been green lit to air on the Sundance Channel in December. Produced by World of Wonder, the series takes a look at the life of Jay Bakker, the son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, as he faces the struggles of running his Revolution church in Atlanta.

High Stakes Poker on GSN, where each contestant has to put up $100,000 of their own cash, will return for season two with 16 episodes. The first season finale airs on Monday.

Fox Reality Channel is taking segments of its daily entertainment news magazine show, Reality Remix and making them available via podcast starting May 1. The video podcasts will feature exclusive footage, extended interviews and commentary by the host, Kennedy. It will be free to users and available from foxreality.com and realityremix.tv, as well as iTunes and Yahoo!Podcasts.

Bravo kicks off Inside the Actors Studio with the season premiere on May 7 featuring the cast of Law & Order. Future episodes will have the 200th guest, Dustin Hoffman; first ever encore guest, Tom Hanks; plus Tim Allen, Don Cheadle and Robert Downey Jr.

The Biography Channel premiered the third season of Dead Famous: Ghostly Encounters on Tuesday, with weekly episodes conjuring up long-dead celebrities Rita Hayworth, Bing Crosby and others . The network will also debut the British mystery series Midsomer Murders weekly beginning Sunday.

WWE and Volantis are partnering to launch the new WWE mobile platform worldwide in a multi-year deal. WWE will provide a slate of original, mobile specific content later this spring that includes exclusive video content and original material.

* NEW PRODUCTION / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT *The summer and fall of 1977 in New York City is the subject of the novel by Jonathan Mahler called The Bronx is Burning.  ESPN Original Entertainment has picked up the rights to that book and will adapt it for an 8-episode series for ESPN, set to debut 30 years after its theme, that is summer 2007, and produced by Tollin/Robbins Prods.  To refresh your memory, 1977 was the summer of the NYC blackout, Son of Sam was on the loose, there were three strong candidates in the running for the Mayor’s job – Koch, Cuomo and Abzug; and the Yankees won the World Series.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Chris McGurk has been appointed to Senior Advisor/New Ventures for IDT Entertainment. Chris will focus his attention on leveraging the company’s assets to build a new live-action theatrical production and distribution division. He will report to CEO Morris Berger and work closely with senior executives.

Michael Roberts has been named EVP/Current Programming at The CW network, reporting to programming head Dawn Ostroff.  Michael migrates over from The WB where he has held the same position for a little more than a year.

Manhattan Center Studios has added Daphne Walter as Director/Video Production and Operations. Daphne will manage the daily operations of the studios and be responsible for new business development. She reports directly to Peter Ross, President and General Counsel.

Gill Pritchard has been promoted to SVP/Business Development for BBC America and BBC Worldwide’s New Media division. Based in New York, Gill will spearhead new revenue streams and expand the British content for American viewers on IPTV, broadband and mobile.

Dan Jbara has been named Executive Producer of The Greg Behrendt Show from Sony Pictures Television. Janelle Fiorito will be co-Executive Producer of the show, producing signature elements and daily content.

PIC-TV has upped David Hansfield to SVP/Business Development.

WWE Films has advanced Joel Simon to Creative Executive. WWE Films has two releases in theatres this year: See No Evil on May 19 and The Marine on September 8.

Mark Melvin has joined Music Choice as Director/Advertising Sales. Mark will demonstrate the target marketing opportunities to potential advertisers based on the VOD products offered by Music Choice.

* RATINGS *Wednesday – A18-49 Analysis: FOX lassoed the #1 position Wednesday night with a 10.2/27 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research.
